My list of Genealogy Research Tips
December 15, 2011
- Just because two people have the same name doesn't mean they are the same person.
- No matter how unusual you think a name may be, don't assume there was only one person with that name.
- The wife named in a man's will was not always the mother of (all of) his children. (Or even any of his children.)
- When anyone uses the phrase "has to be", consider that a Red Flag. Sometimes there are other possibilities that haven't been considered.
- The most obvious explanation is not always the correct explanation.
- Sometimes the information reported in the census records is wrong.
- A lot of incorrect genealogy information has been posted on the Internet but the Internet does not have a monopoly on incorrect genealogy information. Sometime the information printed in genealogy books is wrong too. Just because something gets printed in a book, doesn't make it correct.
Key points for Y-DNA testing:
- Only males have Y-DNA. Females do not have Y-DNA.
- Y-DNA is passed from biological father to biological son.
- Y-DNA is usually passed from generation to generation without change. Changes do happen from time to time but they are rare.
- You have to have matching Y-DNA from descendants of two different sons in order to be able to triangulate back to their father.
- When selecting participants for Y-DNA triangulation you want to select men who are as distantly related as possible but still have a documented relationship along their direct paternal lines. That is, 5th cousins are better than 4th cousins but 4th cousins are better than 3rd cousins and 3rd cousins are better than 2nd cousins. You can only triangulate back to their most recent direct paternal line common ancestor. For 1st cousins that would be their grandfather. For 2nd cousins that would be their great-grandfather. Etc.
############################################################
Don't forget there can be double entries for the same families. My
great-grandparents were listed in one county and then another because
they had moved since being counted the first time and were counted again
in their new county. They can also not be listed for the same reason.
As we count down the weeks before the 1940 census comes out, remember
there will be no indexes for a few months. That 72 year wait should be
reduced to no more than 50 years. sigh...
Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year.

I have discovered that this applies to just about every source of genealogical information. Take everything with a grain of salt, or a shaker-full in some cases, and search for any and all variations of spelling. You might be surprised at how mangled names can get, especially in older records. It takes a special kind of mindset to put up with all of that, but the end result is exhilarating.
With regard to FamilySearch: they rely on volunteer help for their indexing. Mistakes are just inevitable. On the plus side, they are receptive to suggestions and/or corrections. They want it to be right as much as we do.
Happy researching!

I have more than one tree on ancestry.com. I'm trying to clean them up now. I try as hard as I can to find a Bible record, birth record issued by a state, marriage record issued by a state, death or cemetery records, or some kind of reliable documentation. You can't believe everything you find on ancestry.com but I've found lots of places to search. Sometimes family search gets things incorrect. It all depends on the researcher. Family Search had my great-grandmother's last name spelled wrong. It took me a long time to find the information, which was otherwise correct. Cathy (Carter) Martin

I've found my grandmother's name (and her siblings') spelled all different ways on the census records, too. The family trees are just a jumping-off point -- erroneous information gets replicated when people just keep adding everything. I've had to go back and clean mine up more than once, too. But they're a work in progress. :-)

Spelling varied so much until recently that sometimes there wasn't a "right" or "wrong" way to spell a name. If you are stuck, it pays to check any variant spelling
you can think of (and probably a few that you can't). That also applies to Census indexes, sometimes it is the person doing the indexing and other times it is an image
in poor condition.

On the other hand, a family tree can be very helpful in telling you where to look. Don't believe it until you check the records (a good tree should tell you what
records are available).
If you are lucky enough to find a family tree published in one of the old family books for an area ("Goodspeed", from the late 1800s, was typical and had volumes for
several states) the information for the person who submitted the article and his parents, siblings, and children (and their spouses) should be mostly accurate but
beyond that it becomes less so. Some of those are on-line on the Rootsweb page for the area they cover.

I would suggest that you not use Ancestry's Family Trees, those are the
records you are talking about.
Family Trees are notoriously bad because they are user submitted material
and a lot of people don't know how to research and put almost anything in
their trees. Those are not actual "records", they are what they are,
someone else's work, and I would never purchase one of their Family Tree
CDs, they are a complete ripoff.
There are lots of other databases on Ancestry, as well as on many other
websites like FamilySearch's new website, where actual records, either
images or transcriptions by volunteers, from microfilm obtained from the
various State Archives or County Courthouses, Registers of Deeds, or State
Vital Records Departments, are included, and they are the ONLY sources that
are derived from real transactions.
Deloris Williams
You should supply more info, like, who was he married to, and where were
they living when your parent(s) were born. It helps to give researchers
other names associated with the one you are seeking to give them some idea
about where and who to look for them with.
Also, for everyone replying to a message in a Digest, you will greatly
increase the possibility of someone helping you by changing the subject in
your message. The heading " Carter Digest, Vol. etc., etc., means nothing
and is only the heading for a group of messages.

You can look at the 1850 Census on www.familysearch.org (or Ancestry.com). Beyond that, good luck. FamilySearch might also have marriage records if you know when and
where to look.

>>Does anyone recognize these two families? What is the next step? I have
used the census records in HeritageQuest, but the next oldest census is the
1840 which I find extremely difficult to glean much from.
Even their so-called books are not accurate. I have some ancestors from
Morrow Co, OH. They are listed in a book "compiled" by someone. When I
tried to contact that person, got a bounce. When I contacted Morrow
County, OH historical society, they had never heard of the person who
"compiled" the book or the book itself.
While there are a lot of things on Ancestry that are not "real," I still
find it worthwhile to subscribe. I don't count their info as 100% true;
however, it does usually give my clues on where and when to look for
someone.

Digging deep under all the trees for my roots!
Census and newspaper archives are almost the only things you can believe on Ancestry. I bought some CD’s and found my own entries on 1, also found some cousins on another that someone else had submitted that I actually know. On the CD it stated that they had died in the 1840’s. I might have thought it was a co-incidence except that it is 3 brothers with very unusual names, and their wives and children were listed as well. They are all still alive and well in 2011. When I made this discovery I stopped paying for ANCESTRY. Just saying everything they have was submitted by people just like us, and the information is not always correct.
I am trying to trace the ancestors of two separate Carter families.
I have traced the first Carter family back to the 1860 Census: Post Office:
Bridgeport, town of Sullivan, Madison County, New York where I found Elijah
Carter who was born around 1827. His wife's name is Elizabeth. My husband
and his sister remembers their family talking about Oneida Lake. In the
1880 census, the family had moved to Oregon.
I have traced the second Carter family back to the 1860 census. Post
Office: Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky where I found James Carter who
was born around 1824 in Tennessee. His wife's name is Elinder. I next find
his son, John W in the 1900 census in Peone Precinct, Spokane County, WA.
My friend's family believes they originally came from the King Carter
plantation.
Does anyone recognize these two families? What is the next step? I have
used the census records in HeritageQuest, but the next oldest census is the
1840 which I find extremely difficult to glean much from.

Hi Dennis,
I spoke in my last message about accuracy and I made an error regarding Joseph Carter's father.
It was Joseph's grandfather, George Carter, who came from Bucklebury, England. His father, also
George Carter, was born in East Bradford, Chester Co. PA.
Sorry about that.

Hello Dennis,
Thanks for you quick response. To really be able to help you I will need any information you may have as outlined in my previous message. Do you know her parent's names or any of her siblings? Is Middlesex Co, VA where she was married and your father raised? You see in trying to locate them through census we have to also follow the family
as they move. Since census are only taken every 10 years we must know what County and State they are in at census time. But since there maybe many Maude Carters or Maude Fosters to make certain we have the right family
spouse's and children's names are important. Census also identify for us where someone was born. The latest census available for search is the 1930 census. The Internet is also a good source although one must be careful and make certain the sources are accurate. So if you wish my help I will need as much information as you are able to tell me.
My great Grandmother was Susanna Carter born 1799 Knox Co TN. Her parents were married in 1778 in Henry Co, VA. Susanna's father, Joseph Carter, was born 1749 in Chester Co, PA his father having come from Bucklebury, Berkshire, England. It was with help of internet, census and others I was able to get this information. The fact that Joseph's parents were Quakers aided in verifying some information. Church records are another good source.
Lynn

Maude was my grandmother. Her maiden name was Carter. She was born in Middlesex county, VA in 1886. The reunion took place in Virginia this year. Who was your great grandmother?
Dennis

Dear Carter/Foster Descendant,
Your message has been received and now in order to help you we must know what information you
do have. Where were your grandparents Maude and Charles born State, County? Do you know year of birth?
Maude's maiden name? What is your Carter connection? Where were your parents born and year? I am asking this because when one does not have any definite information the place to start is with birth/death records and census which with other family names can usually take us back to 1850 when the census started listing names of everyone in the family. And perhaps by then or before another descent might be found who takes the family even further back.
Most Carter connections have been traced back to England. When you referred to Gloucester where were you
in the states? Which one? Or in England?
Hoping we can help you,
Lynn Marion(A Carter Descendant through
Great Grandmother)

Mr. Foster,
Maud(e) Anna Carter was born 15 Apr 1886 in Middlesex, VA and she was my
great great grandmother. Maude was the daughter of,
John Wesley Carter and Susana Thurston.
I am certain that a few people in the family would not like it if I spoke
with you, as I am the skeleton in the closet that they have been trying to
hide for a very long time. If you are interested in corresponding you can
email me at savasnia(a)comcast.net

If you father was born before 1930, try the Census (1940 will be available before very long). You can search it on-line from www.familysearch.org , HeritageQuest (if
your state or library has a subscription), and Ancestry.com (if you or your library subscribe). The way the indexes are organized you may find it on one but not
another. With a fairly common name, you need a location and/or dates to identify the right people. When you find them once you may be able to backtrack to the
previous Census and so on. FamilySearch and Ancestry also have a lot of marriage and other records once you know where to start.

Do you know Maude's maiden name? And any info on their birth or death
dates? That would be a good starting place to look for other information.
