Thank you, Charles and Allen, for all of your help. I know these volunteer jobs are time-consuming and challenging, and I appreciate all who step up to help out.
Levi Carter, thought to be the son of Nathaniel Carter and a Cherokee woman, was born about 1796. He married Elizabeth Howard, daughter of John Howard and Rebecca Brittain, in Jefferson County, TN, 18 Jul 1816. He resided, later, in Bledsoe County, TN. He went west in about 1843 and died in Missouri in 1844, of fever.
His widow, after, resided in Maries Co., MO. Their children were (all dates are approximate): Sarah 1821-1879 m Jonathan Kelly MO or TN; Rutha 1822-1859 m Davis or David Rollins 1841 TN; Nathan Carter 1822 m Arianna; Betsie 1822; John 1823; Rachel 1829-1912 m Davis or David Rollins; Alexander 1830; Elizabeth 1838; Matilda 1840 m Tom Watson.
Descendants made application to the Dawes Commission (1896-1906) to be enrolled with the Cherokee but were refused. They claimed Judge Carter was a great uncle. If this is true, and we have no reason to doubt that it was, then Levi might have been the brother of David Carter, of whom much has been written in Oklahoma, predominantly.
David Carter was said to have been the grandson or great grandson of Nathaniel and Sarah Bennett, killed in a massacre in southwestern New York in 1753. One of their sons was taken captive. The son was either the father of Nathaniel, or was Nathaniel, himself. Stories are not clear. However, David claimed to be son of Nathaniel Carter and Ta-Wah, a Cherokee woman.
We would like to correspond with anyone having an interest in, or connections with, these families.
Thanks, again.

Yes, thank you, Mr. Carter, for your years of help on this site. If I do happen to find my family line, it will likely come from the help of other researchers. I have searched a decade and only chipped the surface a tiny bit.
This is what I know. My mother's grandmother was a lady named Martha Carter who came out of Mississippi into central Arkansas with the Herring family she married into.
1860 Yell County, Arkansas
Duchess Creek Community
James Herring with his wife Martha Carter Herring (she is age 20)
children: Celestial age 5 and Cole Martin Herring age 6 months.
The Herrings came to Arkansas out of Montgomery County, Mississippi.
The only clues that I have for Martha and her family is that she appears to come from the Nancy Carter family out of Mississippi. I say that because one of Martha's sisters also came to Arkansas and raised her family there. I don't have my notes but I think she married a Greenhaw or a Counts. They lived right in the same area. If this is so, then Martha had an older brother named Daniel Carter. I think this Nancy was a cousin to James Herring's father, Lewis/Louis and an aunt to James. John Herring was living right near Nancy and her children and I think he was Nancy's brother. There were Carters who came to Yell and Pope Counties in ARkansas who married kin in the Herring family and I am thinking Nancy and her children are related. Nancy appears to be a widow. Since Daniel is her only listed son, I think maybe her husband might be a Daniel but I have never found one like that.
James Herring served out of Yell County during the Civil War. After the war, he remarried. He moved on to Texas and I never found him there... but that is what researchers say. The Herring family, for the most part changed their spelling to Hearing and some went to Texas, some stayed in Arkansas and some went back to Mississippi. So. I don't know what happened to Martha or to Celestial. Cole married Sallie Nordin when he grew up and they are Mama's grandparents through her father Lawrence. Cole also married a second time when Sallie died and named his oldest daughter with her Essie. I am supposing that might be short for Celestial.

Carter and Wallace Cousins,
I originally started this Carter and Wallace research lists back in 1996,
when the lists were still housed on the computers at the University of
Indiana. Many years later, many changes, new home for the list, yada yada
yada...........
In the past few years, due mainly to home/family & business commitments, and
general apathy on my part, I have neglected the on going maintenance of our
family list. I no longer find that I have the required motivation to be the
group "cheer leader", therefore I ask for a volunteer to take over the day
to day management. Basically, I want to pass the baton on to the next runner
If you are interested, please contact me " Off List " at: cetracer@comcast
net
Thank you for the past 14 years. I look forward to many more years to come
under new management. Maybe new blood and enthusiasm will promote activity
and renewed interest in the research of our common family name.

Chuck Carter

Regards,
Chuck Carter
