Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Well Judith, true genealogist do not get offended over questions because
they understand that it is past history and you have to ask to learn but
I was also told once, that a lot of black people that have the Carter
name, or any others by that note, were named after thier masters familiy
names. After a lot of reading and questions, I have learned that not all
slaves were mistreated and sometimes they chose to have thier masters
name as thier own surname and did. That makes searching harder for us
but it is a fact of the past, so I am told or read.....

Please don;t hit me, but a couple of years ago I was going thru phone books
and calling some Carters, and I got the sweetest little older lady who was a
Carter, and a black woman, and she asked me if I was a white woman, which I
replied I was..She went on to say that a WHOLE bunch of Carters are black
families, and she said I might want to mention that when I make queries,

I do think that was some helpful information.
Sorry, I don;t mean to offend anyone.

While the list is getting active again I would like to see if anyone has any
knowledge of this CARTER line. He has been confused with a William, son of
Charles and Judith Carter before.
1. William Carter was born on Jul 2, 1773 in , , VA and died about
1851 in , Bedford, VA about age 78. He was living with son James
according to the 1850 census.
William may have married Mary Elizabeth Price in 1791 Some believe he may
have been married Jan. 25, 1808; to Jenny Watkins; Jeremiah Hilton, Surety.
Several different children have been attributed to him. I can't confirm his
wife/wives or when they died.
This following children are confirmed from William's will writtern 17
October 1847 - probated 23 December 1851.
Children from this marriage were:
i. Lucy Carter was born about 1800 in Bedford, VA.
Lucy married Nace? Bailey (maybe) on Nov 25, 1819 in , Bedford, VA.
Lucy next married Perkins.
ii. Elizabeth Carter(1) was born on Nov 14, 1804 in , Bedford, VA and
died in , Bedford, VA.
iii. Sarah Carter was born about 1804 in , Bedford, VA and died before
1847 in , Bedford, VA.
Sarah married Bass.
iv. Julia Ann Carter was born about 1808 in , Bedford, VA and died on
Apr 16, 1880 in , Bedford, VA about age 72.
Julia married Samuel Harris on Dec 10, 1827 in , Bedford, VA. Samuel
was
born in 1801 and died before 1880.
v. William Price Carter was born in Nov 1811 in . Bedford, VA and
died on Jun 16, 1875 in Tuscola, Douglas, IL at age 63.
William married Martha (Patsy) Mayse on Jan 23, 1836 in Lynchburg,
Bedford, VA, daughter of James Mayse, Jr. and Martha "Patsey"
Wright. Martha was born about 1809 in , Bedford, VA, died in 1890
in
Independence, Jackson Co. Missouri about age 81, and was buried
in
1890 in Quincy, Adams, IL. (MY DIRECT LINE)
vi. James M. Carter was born about 1813 in Bedford, VA.
James married Sarah Stone on Mar 28, 1842 in Bedford, VA, daughter of
James Stone and Martha Hobson. Sarah was born about 1825 in ,
Bedford, VA.
I did go get my Carter research on a website. If anyone has any
connections, let me know. Jacob started in SC but most of my Carter were
born or ended up in Georgia.

Have you checked the Library of Virginia website? It has a lot of land
grant information, and some of them were in what is now Kentucky. I don't
have the URL written down, but you should be able to find a link from the
Rootsweb site for Virginia and/or some of the VA counties. Then look around
the site for on-line resources.

Geri, Thank you very much for responding to my query. I have seen
this information posted previously and think (hope?) it may be
correct. According to General William Giles Harding Carter, U.S.
Army, Giles Carter of Virginia (Baltimore: The Lord Baltimore Press,
1909), 109, 115-6), Theodorick and Anne Waddell Carter had a son
William, among other children. The problem I have is not being able
to prove that their son is the William who died in Halifax County,
NC. The fact that William (died 1810) and Deanitia Carter had a son
named Theodorick does not seem to me to be convincing proof. I posted
the query in the hopes that someone would know of some proof. I have
seen dates of birth given for Theodorick and Anne's children but the
person posting was unable or unwilling to furnish a source for the
information. I don't know of any other Carter line containing a
Theodorick but I think there have been entirely too many William
Carters running around. And I don't remember seeing another Deanitia
before and haven't a clue about her, even after a trip to Halifx
County, NC.
I do appreciate your taking the time to respond to my query and would
be most grateful if you, or anyone else, have any real proof.

I am looking for the parents and siblings of William CARTER who died
in Halifax County, North Carolina, in 1810. His will identifies his
wife as Deanitia, and his children as William (?Billie?), Theodorick,
Joseph. Francis, Mary, Martha, Nancy Ann, and Lucy. The name of the
son Theodorick may indicate William is of the Giles Carter of Virginia
family but I?ve found no proof.
Any information would be sincerely appreciated.

Hi Deloris,
Thank you very much for posting this information (which I have
shortened to avoid cluttering the list with repeats). This record
pertains to William “Billy” Carter (9 June 1760, Halifax County, NC -
21 February 1847, prob. Macon County, TN, where he is buried), son of
William Carter who died in Halifax County, NC in 1810 as stated in the
document you transcribed. William’s (who died 1810) executor was his
son Francis, brother of “Billy,” subject of this application.
Thank you very much for transcribing this information and taking the
time to respond.

I only have a few Carters in my research so far:
Tennessee Dmanda Carter is my 3rd great-grandmother who married James
Madison Stout. Her children were Narsisie Jane Stout, Nancy Emaline Stout,
Willis H Stout, and Jonathan Benjamin Stout (1874-1952). Jonathan was
buried in the Kingston Cemetery in Kingston, Madison County, Arkansas.
My other Carter is John L Carter who married Fanny Reynolds (my
great-grandaunt). She is the daughter of Thomas Franklin David Reynolds and
Viola Emaline Burgess. Her birthdate could be estimated in the 1920s-1930s
in Arkansas.
My research is online at http://www.ksthompson.com.

Subject: [CARTER] William CARTER, died 1810, Halifax County, NC
I am looking for the parents and siblings of William CARTER who died
in Halifax County, North Carolina, in 1810. His will identifies his
wife as Deanitia, and his children as William (Billie), Theodorick,
Joseph. Francis, Mary, Martha, Nancy Ann, and Lucy. The name of the
son Theodorick may indicate William is of the Giles Carter of Virginia
family but Ive found no proof.
Any information would be sincerely appreciated.
George

Are you the lady who had the grandfather that some of us were musing might
have been involved in the mob? I don't mean to be insulting, and I may have
the wrong mailing list, but I remember someone once describing a mysterious
death, a house right near a major mob leader in Florida, etc. If so, what
were the circumstances of your grandfather's death again? Were you ever
able to locate a death certificate for him? Ever able to trace that
business in GA? Or the brother?

Subject: [CARTER] My Carter Brick: BENTLEY FREDERICK CARTER
I guess my missing Carter is a brick, too, rather than a wall, as he was my
grandfather, BENTLEY FREDERICK CARTER, and I know nothing about his
parentage and very little about him. I don't know for certain where or when
he was born (maybe Jesup, GA, around 1870-80?), where or when he died and
where buried (maybe December 29, 1931, but haven't a clue where). What I do
know is that he married my grandmother, Alma Irene Mulligan, on December 2,
1919, in Atlanta, GA;
that he is listed on my mother's birth certificate (Margaret Frances Carter)
in 1925 as being 53, that
he's listed on my uncle's birth certificate Stephen Brian Carter) in 1929 as
being 54, and that
he, my grandmother, and both children are listed in the 1930 census in Miami
Beach. They had homes both in NYC and Miami, and he had business concerns
in Atlanta, where we think a brother lived.
I keep hoping that some real clue will turn up....

Alas, I guess that Myron Sampson is no longer with us on this list..........
....
I hope all is well with him, and if anyone knows Myron or how to get hold of
him, please do. We need him back. Last time I talked with him, back around
1997 when he was still part of the CARTER list, he had over 30,000 CARTER
names in his database.

Subject: [CARTER] My CARTER brickwall............
OK, I suggested that everyone give it the college try and get this list kick
started again, so I'll make my contribution............
I am looking for information on the family of my great grandfather:
William Jasper Carter
born: 1867, Tennessee - died: 1918, Manila, Arkansas
He was marreid on: 02 December 1888, Carroll Co., TN to:
Clarrisa Jane Wood
born: 30 April 1868 - Carroll Co, TN - died: 17 June 1954 - Humboldt, Gibson
Co., TN
the daugher of: William Henry Wood and Martha Green Davis
We know ( and I say "we know" as a Cousin lurks on this list who has been a
very big help in my quest to find this information ) he had 2 sibblings:
Sarena L. Carter - born: October, 1862 - died: 24 May 1921
and was married to: George Alexander Wiles
John Daniel Carter - born: 28 September 1864 - died: 1942
and was married to: J. Bernetta Holmes
For the longest time, all we knew was that the mother of these 3 was named:
Nancy and that she had been born: ca 1842
Finally, after 14 years of search, we have finally found that her maiden
name was:
Nancy E. Tate - born: ca 1842 - died: sometime after 1910 and that she had
been married to a:
William Carter - born: Unknown - died: Unknown
So, can anyone tell me something or know who, was " William Carter " that
married Nancy E. Tate??
I don't know if Myron Samson is still a subscriber to this list or not. He
used to be a member in the early years of this list. Myron had a Carter
database of over 30,000 CARTER names and I would really like to know if he
might be able to make a connection with what I've finally been able to find
out. So, Myron, if you're out there, contact me.
Well Cousins, that's my contribution for the day. Hopefully, someone can
tag something on and give me some direction. If not, keep the list going
with other message threads.
Regards,
Chuck Carter
