Holly - you are so funny! But your words ring true. I am a researcher in my
day job and erroneous information can do more damage than good. In fact, it
can undo years worth of accurate information!
I always want to see where the information came from and is there
documentation to go along with it. If someone sends me a chart with just a
bunch of names, I treat it as such. I may use it to find some clues- but if
I find out it is worthless, I dump it.
A lot of people are getting into the genealogy craze - it's a lot of fun and
the internet provides endless links to both useful and misleading
information. It's just important to ferret out what is the truth and which
is bunk so that the latter is not perpetuated through cyberspace!
Cheers to you

You have to be very careful about family tree information that you see
posted on the Internet. A lot of people post things that were just made up.
They don't care if it is accurate or fiction. They just want to make
themselves a tree that they think looks good.
Then other people come along, well meaning people trying to be helpful, they
see the information and assume it to be true and then pass it along to
others.
It's on the Internet! It MUST be true, right??
I've encountered some nut jobs along the way. People who should be on
medication or under the care of a full time nanny. Some of them are very
good at feeding back what they think the person wants to hear. They think
that making people happy is a good thing and that reality is not relevant.
What we end up with is a Frankenstein monster where one person is made up
from the parts of many different people who happened to have the same names
or similar names.
Sorry for the long early morning rant but I just recently had a bad
experience where someone tried to insert herself into my Carter family with
a bunch of made up nonsense. Now I'm worried who else she will pass this
nonsense on to and how are they going to know that it is nothing more than
made up nonsense?
The name Stinnette was included in the nonsense that was sent to me.

Thanks for your reply, Geri!
I would like to know where they came from and how
they might be related to Ezra Carter and Maybelle
Addington (parents of June Carter Cash.) My
grandmother was a niece of these Carter brothers
and she use to talk about being related to Maybelle.
I'm just trying to figure out how they connect.
I'd really appreciate any help you can give. I have
very little information on this part of my family. Thank you!

Hilda,
The Warrens were neighbors of the Carters in the Blackwater Swamp
borderlands between Surry and Isle Of Wight counties of VA for centuries.
There must be a tie to Lincoln Co., TN but my thoughts on the subject were
disproved by ??? Will check to see what and who was disproved. My Carter
branch that journeyed from VA to Morgan Co., AL via NC, could very well have
spent some time in the Lincoln Co., TN area.....but I can't prove it.

Martin Carter married Penninah Hollowell
Martin and Penninah (Hollowell) Carter, the former of
whom was born in Tennessee, and the latter in North Carolina. Martin Carter
came
alone to Indiana when sixteen years old, having walked from Tennessee to
Indiana
barefooted in 1834. Penninah Hollowell came with her parents to Indiana
overland
in a two-wheeled cart Martin Carter worked in various parts of southern
Indiana
and finally settled near Burlington, where he was employed at making brick
and
farming. He had been married first in southern Indiana and, after coming to
Carroll county, was married to Penninah Hollowell. He died when his son,
Henry,
was five years old, when he was thirty-nine years of age, in 1854. Martin
Carter
and his wife were the parents of five children, including one pair of twins.
Penninah Hollowell, when nine years old, was taken ill with tuberculosis of
the
knee bone. After she had been filled with whiskey, she was held by force and
the
limb was amputated above the knee and seared with hot irons. This was
primitive
surgery and it was almost the only kind of surgery known to pioneer times in
which Penninah Hollowell lived.

and his wife, Alice Croxon, was then aged 55. He was dead before October 18,
1655, for on that date his widow, Alice Carter, made an agreement with
Edward Pettaway who had married the relict of William Carter, Jr.
"son-in-law to me Alice Carter", that he was to enjoy the use of 500 acres
of land bequeathed to William Carter, Jr. only during the lifetime of his
wife Elizabeth.
Mrs. Alice Carter, married (2) Captain Giles Parke, Justice of Surry and (3)
Edward Warren.
Robert Crafford, b. 1660, ("Craford" in Quit Rents 1704) came to Surry
before March 6, 1682/3, as the records show that on March 6, 1682/3, his
wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter and heiress of George Carter, deceased.
(O.B. 1671-90, p. 401.) On November 1, 1684, Robert Crafford and Elizabeth,
his wife, deed land in Surry which was originally granted to William Carter,
her grandfather, May 21, 1638.
Boddie's "Historical Southern Families" Vol. IX, Page 68-140, shows the
marriages of Sarah Crafford to John Newsom and Elizabeth Crafford to Thomas
Newsom
Chuck Carter,
Is it possible that the 2nd wife of the William Carter, b.1600 in London, d.
1655 is Ann Mathis. I have 1 wife as Ann Mathis, another as Alice Croxton,
and another as Avis Tutley???????????
Is it possible that one of this William Carter's sons was a Thomas Carter,
b. abt 1630 was married to an Elinor Cooke, aka Eleanor Cooke: And that their
son Thomas Jr. b. 1651, d. 1710 as married to Magdalen Moore???
If this is true, then I am a direct descendant of this William Carter, b.
1600-through my great grandmother Elizabeth Carter Kearney, b. 1856 in LA, d.
1928 in Beauregard Parish, LA
Always willing to share other Carter info in my file.............
Hopefully,
Albert Gore
(The one from Texas)
My CARTER files show several Carter CRAFFORDS and Crafford CARTERS. William
CARTER of Surry Co., VA (1600-1655) was married three times. The third
wife, Alice Croxon, bore George, Mary and Robert Carter. George's daughter
married a Crafford. William Carter's first wife, Avis Purtley, was the
mother of William, Jr. and Thomas of my line. My gurus hold William to be
the older brother of John Carter of Corotoman, Lancaster Co., VA.
My branches of the tree migrated from Surry to Northampton Co., NC by about
1830 and some of the limbs moved on westward, some to Morgan Co., AL and my
direct to Nicholas Co., KY before 1840. The Newsome surname you noted is
also familiar in my records.

Thank you!

Hello,
I need an expert and/or lucky break!
The following information describes my brick wall-
See http://www.carter-cousins.org/kits/60067.htm
I have been working about 10 years to get past my gg-grandfather
HENRY CARTER and have been unable to identify parents or siblings.
He lived in Barnwell County, South Carolina which was is one of the
"Burned" counties and there is meager information available.
Another problem is that his father-in-law Abraham Hiers had two
daughters named Elizabeth (from different marriages) born just a
year or two apart... Very confusing and according to different
sources say this one or the other OR neither married Henry.
Could someone point me in some new way to search?

You may be able to access images of U.S. census records, more than 20,000 fully searchable genealogy and local history books, images of Revolutionary War Pension applications, PERSI, and more, all from the comfort of your home. The records are available on HeritageQuest Online, a service from ProQuest Information and Learning.
The free access is available to millions of American residents through their local, regional, and state libraries. However, not everyone has "gotten the word."
This was brought to my attention by a recent message posted to this newsletter's discussion boards, stating, "We have none of the ProQuest data available in our state for public access -- that includes the Historical Newspapers and the new ProQuest Obituaries. It is very frustrating and…"
I believe the writer is mistaken. It seems that EVERY resident of that writer's home state already can obtain free access to ProQuest's popular HeritageQuest Online. I thought I would post a reminder here that millions of American residents can obtain free in-home access to HeritageQuest Online right now.
You can obtain more information about this access in the Encyclopedia of Genealogy at http://www.eogen.com/HeritageQuestOnline.
