This may not be of interest at all to you, but I thought I would pass it
along. In Huntsville, AL (extreme northern part of the state), there is
a famous ghost story about a Sally (or Sallie?) Carter. She was
visiting relatives in Huntsville when she sickened and died. She is
said to still haunt the house where she died which is called Cedarhurst.
The house was built before the Civil War and Sally is buried in a small
family cemetery between the house and Covenant Presbyterian Church. The
Thornton family, who were the last owners the house, donated the land
for the church and were faithful members. In fact, Katherine Thornton
Wallace was my Sunday School teacher as a child and she swore the story
about Sally Carter was true. She would often recount odd things that
happened in the house --- things unexplainably ending up in the room
where Sally died, etc. My mother and her friends often had bridal
showers and parties at Cedarhurst when Mrs. Wallace and old Mrs.
Thornton were still alive and many of them swear, too, that strange
things happened in that house. I believe the story is told in a book
entitled, 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey, by Katherine Tucker Windham,
but I'm not certain about that. It may be in one of her other ghost
story books. The Thornton family sold the house and the surrounding
land, which is located at the corner of Drake Avenue and Whitesburg
Drive, to a developer for a subdivision with Cedarhurst as a clubhouse.
I would imagine Sally (Sallie) would have died in the 1800s sometime.
I hope this is of interest!

you.
I live in California and it is very difficult to research from here. Do
you live in Lineville?

I'm sure our local library here in Tuscaloosa has a copy of all the
ghost story books by Katherine Tucker Windham. I'll go see if the story
is in one of them. I seem to remember that the story is in one of those
books, because it was something of a local stink when it was published.
You can imagine the Thornton family would have rather had the graveyard
behind their house left alone, rather than desecrated by ghost seekers.
If story is in one of the books, you can ask you local library to order
through the Library of Congress, which has some type of library book
sharing arrangement. I'll let you know as soon as I can get to the
library next week. Otherwise, Katherine Tucker Windham's son is one of
the editors of our local paper and I will e-mail him. If all else
fails, I can ask my parents, but they are out of the country until
November 17th.

Dear Jeanette,
Are we related????
Oh, and thanks for so much information at once. I don't like it I love it. Yes, please send what ever you have and or can find.
I had their names with the basic info, but thanks to you, you have increased my info so much more. I also have the names of William Cicero Mcdonald's parents but that is as far as I go.
William's father is Napolleon Whitten McDonald. His mother was Susanna Emily HOOTEN. That's is all I have there. My grandmother gave me this info before she died. Her memory had really dimed by this time.
Please allow me to be forever grateful and indebted to your kindness.

Yes siree Bob, that's my family. For your information only: In all the
years I have been researching Sallie (Sarah) CARTER on this list, YOU
are the only person that has ever answered my pleas for info. Thank
you.
I live in California and it is very difficult to research from here. Do
you live in Lineville?
Please send anything you might have on Cicero McDonald and Sarah Jane
CARTER.
Again, thanks for your considerations,

Reva,
With a little more info I may be able to help locate your CARTER ancestors. I need to know more about William Anthony WINDHAM & his wife Lucil(l)e A./Alma/Alecia CARTER.
Where did they live during their marriage. Did they have children? What were the children's names and date of births?
Jeanette

Seeking info on my paternal grandmother.
Her maiden name was Lucile (or Lucille) Alma Carter, born August 31, 1879, in AL...either Ozark, Dale Co., or Orion, Pike Co. I have also seen something where her middle name almost looks like Alicia.
Only info on her parents comes from her death cert. (which as it turns out was filled out by MY mother, not my Dad, which states her father was W. H. Carter born in GA.)
Checking both AL and GA census records for 1880 and 1900, I cannot find a Lucile Carter...or a W. H. Carter with daughter.
Lucile married my grandfather, Rev. William Anthony Windham on 31 Aug, 1904, in Climax, Decatur Co, GA. I have a copy of their marriage cert.
I did find a William Carter, married to a Callie Hay(e)s with a daughter, Lucy, approx. 9 mos. old, on the 1880 Orion, Pike Co., AL census. Ordered his d/c which states his name as William Myers Carter, born 09 Sept 1852, in Kents, AL and died 12 Feb 1936 in Climax GA. D/C signed by a C. O. Carter.
Anyone have any info on any of the above Carters??? Been searching a long time. Appreciate any help you could give me.
