son of Abednego, married to Helena (Elainey, Elviney, whatever) Whitfield of
Nelson County Kentucky. And that's about all I know.

Would anyone have information on Jonathan and Elizabeth CARTER family in mid-1800's in Holmes County, Mississippi?? I find them in the 1850 Holmes County, MS Federal Census: He is 68 years of age; she is 65. Any children would have been long gone. Would one of their children have been Elizabeth?? I am trying to find family of one Elizabeth P. CARTER that married Johnson G. OVERSTREET in about 1845 in Mississippi - possibly Holmes County. Any help will be greatly appreicated.
Hi to all this is my first posting to this list.
I am researching this Carter Line,
CARTER: John b/ c 1819 Southampton Hamshire England, he was married on the 15 September 1839 in the parish church St Marys Southampton Hamshire England to.
TODD Sophia Elizabeth b/ c 1815.
John's fathers name was also John and Sophia Elizabeth's was Samuel Todd.
In the 1841 Cencus they were living in the street called Staple Gardens in the city of Winchester Parish of St Thomas with 1yr old son John. Also in this same street there was a Charles Carter with wife Ann and 3 children. At this time I do not know for sure that the two men John and Charles are related.
Sophia Elizabeth died 19 May 1849 Bowden South Australia,Australia. John died 5th November 1894 Bunya Bunya, Caboolture District, Queensland, Australia.
Any help with this couple would be great also I have information to share if these are part of your family tree.
Thanks anyway

You know I have been on these lists for 6 years and never have I insulted
nor have I posted bad information. My Carter family David Carter was a
Revolutionary War soldier was at Valley Forge, as was John Newby Va.,Jacob
Garrigues NJ,Peter Varney NH,Ensign John Tuttle,Nathaniel Varney,Joseph
Varney,Tuthill Dayton Manorville, all fought in the Rev War, Ross S Carter
504th PIR WW II.
History and Genealogy walk like brothers hand in hand from the start to
whatever finish there might be.My roots in this country are deep.My Great
Aunt aka "Ann Purcell" was Sister Mary Bernadette 54 years with the New
York Foundling Hospital I have been fascinated with her experiences in that
era with the adventures she experienced on the Orphan trains.
So when I discuss these past by gone days it is with zest and I embrace the
experiences that my ancestors and my present relatives share. These histo
ries are a part of our lives.I posted my information because this is a
diversified feeling and different people feel different things but that
history is a part genealgy.
So if I offend anyone that is not my intent it is simply to discuss history
as it happened.
So I thank you for your input.

Looking forward to a wonderful meeting to be held at Barbara Bush Library
to discuss and share history of the Wars that our great country has been
involved in.
Documenting your loved ones experiences has been very difficult, due to the
fire that swept away records in 1973,perhaps I can offer some insight into
that problem.
My father, Allen Newby, was with the 82nd A/B during WW II, my mother
Jeanne Varney served our country as a WAC in WW II.My husband, Marcus
Cherry, served in the Viet Nam War, for two tours of duty, volunteering and
retired an E-8 turbulent times, but our men and women served and did their
duty. My cousin, Gary Newby, is on the Viet Nam Memorial Wall.My niece and
nephew are currently serving overseas, somewhere, representing our family
in this war, in the Air Force.
At our last meeting we had the pleasure of meeting L."Little" Bennett
Fenberg who shared his experiences with the 163rd Signal Photography, Who
was there at the Battle of Cassino, hunkered down shooting a film of the
artillery. L. B. was with 101st A/B when they captured the Eagles Nest.He
had our audience completely captivated. Photographed Audie Murphy when he
received the Medal of Honor.
Or in the Pacific Mr. Warren Kerrington who served on the USS Frost DE144
and is writing penning to memorialize the ship he served on known as "The U
Boat Killer".
Mr. J F Kidd who was held prisoner by the Japanese after Mac Arthur left
the Philippines and is penning his memories in a book called "Twice
Forgotten".
Mr. Ralph Allgood who was aboard the ship Rohna, that was sunk with 1200
Americans, and allies at sea.11-26 1943 by a "Glide Bomb". The burning ship
sinks, and, when the smoke clears, 1135 troops and crew have died. The
images of burned and damaged bodies are a horror that will remain etched on
survivors and rescuers alike. One of the least-known weapons of WW-II has
just inflicted the greatest American death toll on any ship that went down.
I am extending an invitation to anyone who has an interest and also to any
veteran from any war
To please commit to our little meeting, one of which I would like to
develop into monthly discussions.
God bless you all, God Bless our President, and our great country.
Best Regards

Hi,
I'm having the worse luck with my gggrandfather's line and his parents.
Maybe someone out there can help me. My gggrandfather, Pinkney Carter b. Oct
9, 1841 or 1842, or 1843, (depending on his age on what census. ) He married
Mary Maria Christenberry (daughter of William Christenberry of Carroll
county, TN). Pinkney and Mary were in the 1870 census in McLemoresville, Tn
in the 1880 census McLemoresville, Carroll county, TN. Pinkney was in the
1891 veterans schedule in Weakley county. Mary and Pinkney were in the Obion
county census in 1910. In 1920, Pinkney had moved and was living with
grandson, Neal Bowden in Shelby co, Memphis, TN. Mary must've died between
1910 census and the 1920 census. She was lsited as 75 in the 1910 census. I
need to know if anyone has ever heard of any of these names, and where could
I look for a death notice, certificate or obit for Mary Maria Christenberry
Carter , who died with in a 10 year span. I think she , her daughter Lennie
Carter bowden and Mary and Pinkney's son William (Willie) son may have been
one of the first members of the Greenfield United Methodist church. I found
an article listing Mary M. Carter, Mrs. Lena Bowden, and William Carter all
1st members of Greenfield church. I know that Lennie has been listed as Lena
in past census, I know there are 2 Mary M. Carter's in this area. I know that
Lennie Bowden and husband Nathan lived in Greenfield most of her life. Does
anyone have ANY ideas for me? Does anyone know how I might look up records
from Greenfield church or find death records from Obion county? I have been
looking for Pinkney's parents for 6 months non stop. Every article I find , (
obit, death certificate) no names are listed. His death certificate (filled
out by his son) has him being born in GA. He states in all census he's born
in TN. One article says he's spent most of his life in Fulton, KY before
moving to Memphis. I know this is wrong, except I don't know where he was
before he was married. Any help greatly appreciated!!!
Mary

Marsha's notes on the Carter family in my Carter file....
Spellings: Carter, Cartier, Cartea
Carter is a Welch and Gaelic occupation surname, presumeably from cart (small wagon), the designation of one who drives a cart. In Medieval Documents the name is CARECTAR and CARECTARIUS. There are many variations in spelling, surch as Carteret, Cartier, Cartman and Cartwright, this last signifying a mender or maker of carts.
In the year of 1645, the English Parliment attempted to force Irishmen to take English names. Many of the McGartheys changed their names to Carter, but the change evidently was not a lasting one, for a century later the English authorities complained that "The Irish have become as Irish as ever."
The families of Carter were numerous in England in early days. THe Hundred Rolls of Oxford County, 1273 bore the name of JOCIUS CARTARIUS and NICHOLAS le CARTER. John le Cartere lived in Norfolk County in 1273 and Robert le Caretter and Margaret le Careter lived in Huntsford County, in 1273, as is evidenced by the HUNDRED ROLLS of those counties. The poll tax rolls of Yorkshire County, 1379, bore the names Richardus Carter and Thomas Bell Carter.
There were several first settlers in America bearing the name CARTER. Perhaps the first in the Virginia colony was JOHN CARTER who in 1649 was a member of the House of Burgesses from Upper Norfolk and in 1654 from Lancaster County. He was named commander in chief of the forces sent against the Indians in 1669.
It is now difficult to connect the many hundreds of branches of this splendid family. It has become wide-spread in the United States. It is a name that is esteemed everywhere for the substantial qualities who bear it.
ROBERT WORMELY CARTER and his family were among the first, if not the first, Carters to settle in Northeastern KY. The records would seem to indicate that he was of the distinguished family of Carter of Tidewater Virginia of whom "KING" Carter was the most noted. He married in Loudoun Co., Va in Feb 1795 Hebe Smallwood Grayson d/o Col Wm Grayson lands granted by the Government on account of the military service of Col. Grayson in the Revolution. They settled at first on the site of the present Grayson, Carter Counties then Greenup Counties...............etc see my paper files for more.
=====================================================================================
The Carters were French Hugenots and first settled in America on a Land Grant in Virginia known as Redlands.
John Carter the first known Immigrant of the name died at Redlands 1669. One of the Sons of ROBERT KING CARTER b 1663 d 1732 and a s/o ROBERT KING CARTER was JOHN CARTER b 1690 d 1743.
Elijah Carter was a s/o John Carter md to Judith Chastain. A s/o Elijah and Judith was Joseph Carter a Revolutionary War Soldier who died in Morgan Co., KY.
The Carter family was promenient Powhatan and Cumberland Co, VA and then settled near Charlottsville VA.
Three Prominent descendants of John Carter of REDLANDS was General Robert E. Lee, Wm Henry Harrison, and Benjamin Harrison
Does anyone know the parents of Judith? Could she possibly be Peter Carter & Judith Norris daughter? her birth was 2 Nov 1732.
1-Charles Carter b: 10 Oct 1743, Overwarton Par, Stafford, Virginia, d: 1 Feb
1777, , Culpeper, VA., son of James Carter & Mary Bent.
+Judith Carter b abt. 1737, prob. Goochland, VA, m: 24 Jun 1756, , Goochland, Virginia
Charles Carter enlisted with Payne in the 1st Virginia regiment sometime in 1776 and died in line of duty on 1 Feb1777.
my direct line is through their son, William Carter b: 2 Jul 1773, , Cumberland, Virginia, d: Abt 1851, Bedford, VA
+ Mary Elizabeth Price b: Abt 1782, , Cumberland, VA, m: 1791, , Cumberland, VA.
Thanks, Jean

A couple of weeks ago I sent a post to the list about a book I had located on
the early Irish and Scotch settlers of Pennsylvania. A gentleman from
Michigan, Mr. Norman C. Caldwell, took the time to index the entire book and
offer it back to the list. What a nice gesture and a lot of hard work to
boot. Here is the original post followed by Norman's index.
It is only on rare occasions that I add a book to the list of "must haves"
for the study of Scotch-Irish genealogy. This one is for our friends with
Pennsylvania connections and it is certainly a rare item. Published in 1856
"by a descendant" it is titled:
"A Tribute to the Principles, Virtues, Habits and Public Usefulness of the
Irish and Scotch Early Settlers of Pennsylvania," Chambersburg, Pa.,
Printed by M. Kiefer & Co. 1856, 171 pages.
>From the preface the following: "The writer of the Tribute contained in
this work, had long desired to see from the Historical publications in
Pennsylvania, a vindication of the character and principles of the Irish and
Scotch early settlers of this great State and their descendants against
reproach, as well as aspersion, cast upon them in some modern publications
having pretensions to Historical accuracy...The writer, feeling as if the
sand of his Time glass was nrarly run out, and that he ere long must be laid
aside from labor... has hastily thrown together in his leisure hours, taken
from other avocations, the remarks contained in the subsequent pages."
Those other avocations are Dr. Foote's Sketches of North Carolina and
Virginia, Day's Historical collections, Dr. Smith's Old Redstone, Dr.
Alexander's Log College, Dr. Miller's Life of Dr. Rogers, Dr. Elliott's Life
of McCurdy and others, Craig's History of Pittsburgh, Hazard's Colonial
Records and Archives of Pennsylvania, and American Archives by Force and
Gordon's History of Pennsylvania, Mr Rupp's Histories of Lancaster,
Cumberland and Franklin counties.
The style of writing and knowledge of early Presbyterian history indicates
the author may have been a member of the clergy. There is a lot of detail
on the early members of the church as well as problems with the Indians and
the struggle over land rights during the westward expansion. The book reads
a bit like Prof. Hagy's thesis on the early frontier settlement at Castle's
Woods and it is a combination of history, genealogy and geography.
For those interested in obtaining a copy of the book please contact me at
cscunc(a)aol.com for details.

Robert Cowan

Beth,
The only source I have for Joesph Edgar Carters birth date was from my
grandmother who died 15 years ago. I do know for a fact of their marriage
date in 1884 because that came from the White County Marriage records.
Chances are the birth date could be off.
After just looking at some very old notes... there is a Joseph Carter shown
as the sun of William Carter in the 1880 Census of White County. Which would
put it at the right age but I cannot confirm that it is him because I think
there was another Joesph Carter living in the White County area.
Thank you for all of your help!
Mike

I am researching information on the family of Joseph Edgar Carter born in
1870. Son of William CARTER and Elizabeth MUSGRAVES. Joseph married
Elizabeth Allis Marcus (was previously married to BALES) on 11/18/1884 in
White County, IL. I know of two children: John Franklin CARTER (b.
1/16/1890 d. 3/30/1976) Pearl CARTER (b. 7/4/1892 d. 11/15/1972). Any
information would be greatly appreciated.

Beth,
The only source I have for Joesph Edgar Carters birth date was from my
grandmother who died 15 years ago.
Mike
