SHARLA,
I did some Miss. research a while back and it seemed like they have
annual tax records during that time. Have you checked for that. If you
follow each year, and the names, that can be a good way to figure out
exactly when they arrived in the county and/or about when they either died
or moved away.

After I sent the last message I continued to read and should have included
the following information from John Denton Carter's paper.
******************************************************************************
***************
Levi Carter, Sr.'s family was approximately the size of that of John Carter,
Sr. One source identifies eight children, six sons and two daughters, and
names another possible son. The oldest was Caleb Carter, probably born in the
early 1750s, who was old enough to establish his own household when the family
settled for a time in Western Virginia.
Levi Carter, Sr.'s other sons, according to the source mentioned above, were
Levi, Jr., John, Jesse, Joseph, Elijah, and possibly Nathan. The daughters
were Susanna, who married Absolom Templeton; and Rachel, who married John
Hartley.
In addition to John Carter, Sr., and Levi Carter, Sr., and their identified
family members, and possibly Joseph Carter, Sr., mentioned above, there were
two young men on this long journey of the Carters from New Jersey to Greene
County whose parentage or other family relationship have not been established.
These were David Carter and Ephraim Carter.
The John and Levi Carter families, as well as other Carters whose family
relationships are unknown, began to arrive in Greene County (then Washington
County) about 1780, after long sojourns in Monongalia County, Virginia, and Surry
County, North Carolina, extending over a period of about ten years. The two
patriarchs and younger members of their families who were of age, as well as
Joseph Carter and his family, laid claims to adjoining tracts of land, ranging
from 100 to 1,300 acres, along the fertile flood plain of Lick Creek and its
tributaries. These claims were confirmed and
deeds granted by the state of North Carolina in 1787 and 1793. Once having
settled on their own choice lands capable of providing them with a good
livelihood, the Carters multiplied rapidly. By 1805 there were fourteen Carters on
the list of Greene County tax-payers. In the 1830 federal census of Greene
County, the earliest
census record of the county now available, there were twenty Carters
listed as heads of households. All but a very few of these were descendants
of the patriarchs who led the New Jersey Carters on the long trek to
Tennessee.

All of the activity on the CARTER-L list has given me hope that I can finally connect , after 8 long years of searching , to a family tree for Mourning M CARTER. I am now trying to determine if she was a CARTER by marriage , rather than a CARTER by birth , as I had thought. Here are the facts that I have found. Please contact me if any of these CARTERs are part of your family tree !
Mourning M CARTER born in VA or SC ( 1850 census says SC , but 1860 and 1870 say VA ) between 1811 and 1813. She may have been connected to Anderson CARTER who married the younger sister of her husband , Jabez L DRAKE
Married Jabez Leftwich DRAKE in Huntsville , Madison Co AL on May 10 , 1831
Listed in 1840 Madison Co , AL Census with husband Jabez DRAKE, son Stephen A DRAKE, and son Charles C DRAKE
Listed in 1850 Aberdeen , Monroe Co MS Census with husband Jabez DRAKE , son Stephen , son Charles C ,and son Andrew
Listed in 1860 Aberdeen Monroe Co MS Census with husband Jabez DRAKE and son Andrew
Her husband died 1866
Listed in 1870 Aberdeen Monroe Co MS Census as living with Sarah MURPHY age 35 , Elizabeth MURPHY age 13, James MURPHY age 10 and Luvenia WILLIAMS , age 33 . Luvenia WILLIAMS married O. M. REDMAN in 1873
She does not appear to be related to the CARTERS in Bedford Co VA where her husband's family had lived. I cannot connect her to any CARTER in Madison Co AL around 1831 , when she married there. I thought for awhile that she was the daughter of a Charles CARTER , because the names"Charles" and "Lee" were continued through several generations. I now wonder if she was Mourning .......? who married a ?........CARTER before she married Jabez L DRAKE.Since she married at age 20 , she certainly could have been married previously.
Does anyone have a Carter groom marrying a Mourning .............. of this age ? Or do you have any of the above in your CARTER files.
Here's hoping we can connect. Thanks so much.
Molly
With the recent roll call activity I have notices some inquires on groups of
Carters not tie to my John Carter, who settled Carter's Station. In some
cases their line is buried in the Carter Station Cemetery.
Information only: I have a document written by John Denton Carter and he
has made so observations that may help some researchers.
******************************************************************************
*******************
John Denton Carter stated: The Carters living in New Jersey in the middle of
the eighteenth century, that is, those who later migrated to Greene County
(TN) were not of a single family, but were a group of familles bound together not
only by ties of kinship but of common church membership and the status of
immigrant farmers in search of free land on the American frontier. No doubt some
of the Carter kin remained in New Jersey but at least two of the family
groups, headed by the patriarchs John Carter, Sr. and Levi Carter, Sr. made the
trip together from New Jersey to Tennessee, with long stopovers in Virginia and
North Carolina. The exact relationship of John Sr. and Levi Sr. has not been
established. They may have been brothers or perhaps some other relationship.
They were approximately the same age and both died in Greene County in 1811.
A probable family member, Joseph Carter, Sr. of the same generation as John
Sr. and Levi Sr. may have accompanied, with his family, the latter two on the
move from New Jersey to Greene County, however there is no evidence that Joseph
and his family were with the other Carter groups until the family heads
appeared on the 1780-81 tax rolls of Washington County, NC. An inventory of Joseph
estate in Greene County records indicates he, too, died in the county of 1811.
******************************************************************************
******************
The John Denton Carter paper was written in 1981. We have came a long way
since then on researching. I submit this in hopes it aids someone in finding
their line before TN and they will share what they find because it will aid me
on the John Carter search. Looks like the place to look is New Jersey records.
Clarence
Gayle,
Carter Station is in Greene Co., TN.
As I said before, I have not proven anything that I have on Levi. But the
information I have is that he was in the Rev. War in the VA Militia in
Morgan's CO and Haymond's CO. He moved to Washington Co., TN in 1780 and
married Susannah ?. He was also in Dunsmore's War in Monongalia Co., VA.
As I said, I have not proven any of this myself.
I hope this gives you some clues for your research. Good luck.
Ann
PS I have been told by another researcher, that I should check out New
Jersey for more information. I do plan to do that as best I can without
being in New Jersey.

Kathy,
Being a list admin, not this list, I can tell you that you can have a
message that is too long. It depends on what the admin of the list sets as
maximum size. You might try posting the information as part I and part II
and see if it appears on the list.
Hope this helps.
Ann
PS Since so many of you are posting your Carter lines, and none have posted
any Carter line that I can recognize, I will post a short version of my
Carter line. I have only proven up to my 4th great-grandfather. My
5-g-grandfather is said to be Levi Carter b. 1736 Wales and d. 1811 Carter
Station, TN. Jesse Carter b. 1774 (not proven), d. 1849 (not proven)
married Susannah Harmon. Their daughter, Nancy Carter, married John Henry
Pratt. Their are those that will say there is no proof that his first name
was John, but I have found reference to that being the case although it is
not in a legal document. When John Henry died, Nancy married my
3-g-grandfather from another line, Abraham Absolom Blanton. Nancy Maria
Pratt, daughter of John Henry Pratt and Nancy Carter, married Alexander
Blanton, s/o Abraham Absolom Blanton and Cynthia Ann Pratt, sister to John
Henry Pratt. Alexander's and Nancy Maria's daughter, Susan Blanton, married
Andrew Jackson Bigley. Andrew Lawn Bigley, s/o of Susan and Andrew "Jack",
was my grandfather.

Hmmm......Marsha, I am looking again at this message below and your Carters
are from Spots Co, VA about the same time period my husband's Bailey Carter
was from Spots Co, VA also. And, they ended up in Texas by the 1870s.
I wonder if your Elijah and Bailey might have been very closely related.
I posted my info about Bailey a little while ago on the list, but I haven't
seen it go through yet. I wonder if my list of 'proof' was too long???
Is there such a thing as too long of a post on this list????

Charles and mail list
When I sent my original request for setting up the Carter DNA, I truly
thought that most folks would be interested in eliminating many false
lines of research and be able to narrow their focus. I am truly sorry
to see what has happened on the list and regret that several folks have
unsubscribed.
The Carter DNA Project is now set up, folks have ordered their kits and
have returned their DNA for testing. There is nothing else to do at
this point, except to wait and see what the results are. Vickie has set
up the carter-cousins web site and those that were interested have
submitted our descendant reports for all of you to look at. If more
want to join, all they have to do is contact Vickie.
Charles, Vickie really needs to be able to tell everyone when the
results begin to come in. And I am sure that each of us who submitted
our DNA are going to want to share it with the others to help more of us
connect to each other. This is the purpose of the whole testing.
So I am asking everyone, to please refrain from the fighting, share your
important information with all of us and let's all work together. We
need each other and I personally want to know who on this list, I am
related to. My Dad is 83 years old. He never knew who his father was
until I discovered him last year- it took me 30 years to find him. Dad
does not have a lot of years left, but when he found out that his DNA
would not only help me to research his line, but help others, he wanted
to do it immediately.
I am so sorry for what has happened here. God bless and keep all of
you. meg
Marsha,
