I don't think I'm directly connected but am very interested in this line:
1) They are from Loudoun Co
2) Some mention is made of settlement in OH (incl Belmont Co)
3) Continued travelling west
I'm looking for the origins of Agnes Carter, b ~1815 in Loudoun Co VA
according
to her 1880's Champaign Co IL directory entry (d 1891 Sidney, Champaign Co IL)
m 1836 Madison Helm in Knox Co OH
Also looking for origin of Levi Carter, b ~1790 in VA, enlisted in war of 1812
the first time in Loudoun Co VA in 1812 (2nd time in KY). Levi and Agnes
may be related but not as father and daughter.
Not clear what religions Levi and Agnes practiced. Agnes and Madison Helms
were married by a Universalist minister; Baptist & Methodist also mentioned.
No indication either way that Levi or Agnes had been Quakers; are the
Carters in
your line Quakers?

Hello! Sorry I have nothing to add to your research except to add that my
Elizabeth Jane CARTER b. 1838 in Indiana states that her father was b. in
Ohio and mother in Pa. I've kept my eyes peeled for any mention of CARTER
in Ohio from the time frame you mention as a possible father to my "Lizzie".
Thanks, Marie Cook

I am loking for a picture of Jimmy Carter's mother-in-law around the time
that Jimmy Carter was president. This would be in1980. Frances Allthea Smith
would be around seventy four years old. Does anyone from Plain GA. have a
newspaper clipping or picture that I may get a copy of? I tried the Carter
library but have had no success so far.
Thank you.
Below your message, I have added my husbands line. It started with Bailey
Carter in Spotsyvlania Co, VA, his son was John Carter of Frankin,
Montgomery then Floyd co, and then his son Henry Carter was in Floyd Co,
VA., and two of his sons, Henry Carter and David V. Carter were in Barren
County, KY for many years (see below your message). I believe they went
to Barren co, KY because they had cousins there already. I have posted
earlier messages trying to get these families connected, but was
unsuccessful so far. I know one of the Henry Carter's that was in Barren
County in the early 1800s was also from Spotsylvania Co, VA. Does the
information below ring any bells?
let me know. Thanks, Kathy Wells.

-----OBITUARY - "David V. Carter, Found in 9 March 1900 issue Fannin Co.,
Texas "Bonham News"
Monday last at his home at the county farm, superintendent D. (David) V.
CARTER died after an illness of a week. His death was caused by an
ulceration of the bowels. His suffering was most intense but he bore it
bravely. On Tuesday his body was laid to rest in the Carson cemetery, two
and a half miles north of Ector.
The deceased was born in Floyd Co., Va., in August 1847. He
served in the Confederate Army and at the close of the war he went from
Virginia to Kentucky where in 1878 he was married to Miss Annie E. Twyman.
In 1881 they came to Texas, and have made their home in this county since.
His widow and 2 sons, Emmet and Lorenzo, survive him.
For something more than 4 years Mr. Carter had been superintendent
of the county farm and had served the county most acceptably in that
capacity. No one had ever managed the farm any better than he and it is not
probable that a better man for the place can be found.
Mr. Carter was a good man & good citizen, a good neighbor. For 30
years he had led a Christian life, having confessed Christ and united with
the Christian church in Kentucky. He expressed himself as being ready and
willing to go to receive his reward for the deeds done in the body. The
influence of his good life will live on while his body moulders into dust.
---- OBITUARY - Another obituary for him reads "Death of Mr. D.V. Carter.
Mr. D.V. Carter, superintendent of the county farm died Monday. This is a
sad announcement. Mr. Carter was one of our best citizens. He had won the
confidence of the public to a wonderful degree by his executive ability in
the management of the county farm. He fully met the demands devolving upon
him toward the unfortunate inmates of the poor house, managed the county
convicts with wisdom and carefully controlled the finances of the
institution. The remains were interred at Carson's graveyard, a few miles
north of Ector, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
-----OBITUARY - Her obituary reads "December 13, 1927. Mrs. Annie E. Carter
died at the home of her son, J.R. Carter, 608 N. Spurgeon, Altus, OK,
Tuesday morning at 6:30 o'clock. Funeral services and burial were
conducted Wednesday afternoon, December 14, Rev. J.A. Agnew officiating (was
this man related to David's Mother, Malinda Agnew?). Mrs. Carter was born
in Barron county, Kentucky, January 10, 1846 and was married to D.V. Carter
December 1, 1869. To this union was born two sons, Emmet, the eldest,
died in 1902 and the mother made her home with her son here, J.R. Carter,
since the death of her husband who died March 5, 1900. Mrs. Carter
joined the christian church early in life, was a conscientious Christian and
was beloved by a host of friends. She leaves her son and daughter-in-law,
five grandchildren and a brother, G.W. Twyman, and a host of friends to
mourn her loss.

John Carter m Elizabeth Moore in Barren Co., KY in 1813. I have a lot of
data on Elizabeth's family but nothing at all on John.
There were several Carter families in Barren Co in the 1810 census but I have
never been able to connect John to one of these families. John was born
around 1790 in VA. He left Barren Co around 1818 and went to IL with
Elizabeth's parents. They appeared on the 1820 census of White Co., the
part of White Co that became Hamilton Co. Other families from Barren Co
moved to this Co about the same time.
A few years later, John Carter appears in Sangamon Co., IL along with some
other family members of Elizabeth. He is recorded as a voter in a few
elections and was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church. He is listed in
the 1830 and 1840 census of Sangamon Co. Of his children are James S.,
Thomas and Mary Frances. Three older girls born before 1820. I believe one
girl was Rebecca but the other two elude me.
I have tried to determine who his parents were if they were one of the
families in Barren Co. Does anyone have any information on Carters in Barren
Co., KY? early 1880's.

Anna,
I am needing help on locating some of my family. I'm not having
any luck & was wondering if any of your readers could help.
This is what I would like to know. The 1850 census for Macon
County Tenn.shows Edmond Carter, age 33 from Tn. His wife Martha Horne
age 24 also from Tn. They had a daughter Sarah age 7,and 2 sons James
age 5, Thomas age 2.
Then in the 1860 census it shows Edmond Carter age 46, with wife
Martha age 36, Edmond as being from North Carolina, one daughter sarah
age 17, with 5 sons A.James age 16, Thomas G. age 14, William age 8,
John age 5, and Gideon age 4.
Then in the 1870 census for Macon County Tn. it shows Edward L.
Carter age 55, and wife Martha J. age 46 and had 5 sons William age 17,
John A. age 16, Gideon B. age 14, Robert W. age 9 & George E. age 5
years old. Robert W. Carter was my great Grandfather. He was born in
1861. Also in the 1870 census it shows a William H. Carter age 24, with
a wife Sarah E. age 27,it also shows she was a Carter before marriage.I
think she was Edward 's daughter. She had two daughter's Lauiza E. age
4,and Malvinia S. age 2.
The 1870 census also shows a neighbor Thomas Carter age 80,with a
wife Elizabeth age 81.Both are from North Carolina with a Thomas U. I
think it should of read (G.) instead of (U.) age 24. This would be the
right age for Edward's son & it says he had a handicap,& Thomas wasn't
in Edward's family in 1870.
The 1880 census shows William H. Carter age 35 with wife Sarah E.
age 38,who had two daughter's Lorenza age 15,and Malvina age 12,& one
son William Ed. age 6. The family believes Edward died in 1874 & Thomas
died in 1871.After that time, none of the family shows up anywhere. It
could be Sarah named her son William Ed. after her father. I do know my
great Grandfather went to Sumner Co. Tn. and then Scottsville Ky. and
back to Sumner Co.
Thank You for Your Help,
Christy Carter

Seeking information on two Carter boys who in 1870
were in Texas, Travis County, Onion Creek community
near Austin. They were W.L. CARTER b.1853-55 TX and
FAYETT CARTER b.abt.1856 TX. They were living with a
25?-yr-old man named PEGRAVE/PEGRAW? and several other
children named PEGRAVE/PEGRAW and RETLAW?, also a
MICHAEL ROGERS age 24.
In 1920 in Williamson Co. TX, Pond Springs (near
Austin), there is W.L. CARTER, 65, b.TX, wife H.M.,
daughter GRADY age 34 (yes, a daughter; it says she
was female); son CHARLES D. age 26; and daughter M.L.
age 24; all children were unmarried. Living next door
was WILLIAM L. CARTER age 36, b.TX and wife Ora. Pond
Springs is not too far from the Onion Creek location
of 1870.
I am speculating the W.L. CARTER in 1920 might be the
same as the W.L. CARTER in 1870. The age works out
fairly close. The WILLIAM L. CARTER next door was
perhaps his son, meaning his own name was probably
WILLIAM L. CARTER.
This is of interest because of my relative WILLIAM
LAFAYETTE CARTER b.1837 Hardeman Co. TN. His family
(parents and siblings) went to Travis Co. TX from
Tippah Co. MS in 1851. They lived at Webberville,
which is just east of Austin. In 1870 they had only
recently left the area for Waco, McLennan Co. TX.
Would like to know if there is any connection between
the boys W.L. CARTER and FAYETT CARTER and my relative
WILLIAM LAFAYETTE CARTER. I would not rule out that
they were his sons, though he would have been only
17-18 when the oldest was born.

Well everyone let me tell you, genealogy is history and genectics. We are all
cousins especially the Carter side now it my be distant but we are. When my
studies started some twenty years past.I was searching for answers to many
puzzling questions, and then the computers came along and I kinda got the
hang.I remember, and still have to now, waiting weeks for answers and then
getting the wrong ones at times.
WW II has been a fascinating era the introduction of new weapons the V
Bombs the Tiger Tanks the Paratroopers. The start they were all sorta like
guinea pigs. But they became elite conquering Italy and moving on to Europe
France Holland Belgium and Germany. Understanding that they were probably
always on suicide missions but they did because they could and with love of
their families, and love of their country and fellowman they set the stage
for their own places in history and 75% did not make it.My father was among
the living but the war changed him he carried those burdens of phantoms
until his death.
My ancestors David whose father-in-law Garrigues was already up in age
fought and rode those roads during the Revolutionary wars, they did because
they could and because they cared about their familes and about their
country. I am so proud of them and always try and say thank you in my
prayers,
