Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.

CARTER, Joseph d Spotsylvania Can I ask that we all please post to the list, so we can all converse on this subject. I would like to get it settled if it is possible. Maybe somone has some proof that others of us don't have.
I have had a couple of Carter researchers tell me about the confusion with two Joseph's who had wives named Catherine, and who both died in 1751 in Spotsylvania Co. But, I can only find a Will for one Joseph in Spots Co, in 1750/1751. Are we sure wer're not mixing up the same Joseph? I do realize a couple of you have a couple of different children listed for your Joseph, but most of the names of the children are the same for the two Josephs. I have the Will of Joseph who wrote his Will Feb. 19, 1750, probated in 1751 and names wife Catherine, and children: Joseph, John, George, Robert, Mary, Elizabeth and Caty. Executor was John Minor. Does anyone have a different Joseph who died in 1751? Can you give me the date his Will was written or probated so I can get a copy?
I have access to a copy also of Joseph Lyon Miller's book. But, I have had several people quote to me what is in the book, but no explanation of where the proof is, besides the book itself. I don't want to sound to 'Picky' here, but I would like to be sure of the parentage.
I have checked out the internet, Deeds, census, tax records and many other documents. That is why I have come to the list begging to get this figured out. All it takes is for one person to stumble across a document that no one else has found yet.
So, if there is another Joseph in Spots Co., please post what you have so we can view it. This might settle some of the disagreements.
Thanks so much, Kathy Wells.

Subject: CARTER, Joseph d Spotsylvania
Hi, Kathy hope this will give some clarity on Joseph CARTER d 1751, Spotsylvania Co, VA.
CARTER, Joseph s/o Capt Thomas CARTER, Sr and Katherine DALE married Ann PINES
CARTER, Joseph s/o Thomas CARTER, Jr and Arabella WILLIAMSON was b 1696/97 at "Barford" Lancaster Co, VA married Catherine STEVENS in 1719. Joseph was Tobacco Inspector at Port of Corotoman 1724-1738. In 1738 he moved to Spotsylvania where he died in April 1751. (Will dated 19 Feb 1750 Probated 7 May 1751)
CARTER, Joseph who married Catherine AMMON was born 1704, Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co, VA, supposedly to William CARTER and Mary GOODLOE.
He married Catherine, 1 Dec 1731, Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co, VA.
The confusion seems to arise from the fact both Joseph's married women with the first names Catherine and both Joseph's supposedly died in 1751, St George's Parish, Spotsylvania, Co VA.
In response to Kathy Wells hope for some clarity on Joseph CARTER d 1751,
Spotsylvania Co, VA.

So many of you answered my queries that I would like to thank each and every one of you on this list that answered. It would take a while to thank each of you one at a time. So, THANK YOU. Although I did not find any new information, I really appreciate all of you trying to help and offering suggestions and information you already have. I am still confused by Capt. Thomas Carter's descendants (of Lancaster co), and William Carter of Middlesex Co, Va. because I still had 2 or 3 send me contradictory lines, and all were sure theirs was correct. So, I am guessing there is really no way to actually prove this family. I thought there might be deeds showing proof. I know that many of them had children named George, Joseph & John and that is where it gets confusing, proving we have the right one.
The Johns, Georges and Josephs of this family are all jumbled, and I was in hopes that there was someone who was an authority 'so to speak' on this family. I have found errors in the Capt. Thomas Carter book by Joseph Lyon Miller, and I found that many of you use this book for your references. So, I'm just really not sure what to do about them at this point. I may just have to be satisfied with what I have.
Does anyone have the URL which has the Archives for this list? Sure would appreciate it.
thank you all, Kathy Wells.

I have never sent anything to a mailing list that has not had something

think are of intrest to everyone. A web site that show what the little
people of the world are doing (takes a long tiem to load) and Purple

A movement has been started like that from Desert Storm. During Desert
Storm we tied yellow ribbons anywhere we could. Well, now the movement
is to tie purple ribbons the same way. This is for two reasons.
1. In remembrance of not only the firefighters, police officers,
paramedics who have died, but also for all who have died in this
terrible tragedy.
2. Just as in the military, when a serviceman get injured, he is given

HI
I'm wondering about your carters,my john was from same area married to mary
lahr or lear.I think they were married in 1774. I can find no parent for
either of these. thank you shelby
Let me ask this question about all of the Carters in Spotsylvania. Have any of you seen any Carter with a son named Bailey/Bayley/Baley? If not, possibly Bailey is his middle name. Have you seen anyone with a middle initial of B? He was born about 1743. He was apprenticed out in Spotsylvania to JOHN WALLER Jr. in 1760-1764. This usually means he would turn 21 in 1764, so that would have him being born about 1743. It states Bailey was from Spotsylvania County. But, he is not mentioned in any of the Carter's Wills that have died in Spotsyl County. He must be the son of one of them. But I did find him on the list of tithes in Buckingham County in 1764 and again in 1774. Was this Spotsylvania county previously?
Does anyone have any suggestions at this point? I have ordered a copy of every deed I could find with Bailey's name on it, and no hints there. Are there records I might not know about?
Any help is appreciated.
thanks, Kathy Wells.

Hi Carters, I am looking for information on my great
great grandfather, Wiley J Carter. He was born in
Lincoln Co, TN in 1837. I can find no trace of him or
his family again until 1861 when Wiley, or W J as he
wasl also known, shows up at New Market, AL and joins
the 27th AL Infantry CSA. He lost his right leg in the
battle of Peach Tree Creek. WJ later settled in
Guntersville AL after the war. His first wife was Mary
P. I have other information concerning other wives and
children for those interested. My brick wall has been
finding WJ's parents names and any brothers or sisters
he may have had. W J died in 1910. He may have come to
Alabama from Missouri but I can't be certain of that.
If anyone has any information on these Carters please
let me know at jimrcarter(a)yahoo.com. Thank you. Jim
