"Traces of Texas History" Daniel E. Fox .... list these people:
Richard Carter received a Mexican land grant in 1831 as one of the last group
of colonists settled by Stephen F Austin. Carter moved his family from
Alabama to his land grant in the Brazos River Valley in 1831. After being
isolated from almost everyone ecept friendly Indians and a couple of distant
pioneer neighbors, they moved in 1835 to a small settlement at the Navasota
River Crossing on the old San Antonio Road. But by the end of 1841 the
Carters were back on their land grant in Brazos County, living in a one-room
log cabin. He increased his property and personal values by 1860
accumulating cattle, horses, land and slaves. By the end of the civil war he
was among the top producers of cotton, and corn and was one of the
wealthiest owners in the country. Carter died in 1863 and his wife in 1877,
the estate dwindled in value. By 1920 the old homestead was abandoned. A
Carter Creek is mentioned. pages 153-154
Born in 1787, George Sutherland moved his family to Texas from Alabama in
1787. He soon resumed his career as a merchant while developing his land
grant in the Navidad River Valley. Sutherland was a leader in the
establishment of the agrarian economy of his community and became influential
in the politics of Anglo-American Texas during the years before and after the
Revolution. Sutherland's slave planation was know as Spring Hill. They
grew corn and cotton as major crops and also tobacco, potatoes, millet, oats
and other crops. With the benefit of slave labor Sutherland became a
successful cattle rancher in the 1840's. The days of Spring Hill ended with
Sutherlands death in 1855. It is located in Jackson County area. A family
cemetary was in the area. Sutherland house was occupied from the 1830's to
1870's.
The Thomas W. Carter that I'm seeking died in Oct. 1849 at the age of 69 according to the 1850 U.S. Mortality Schedules. He died in Jackson Co., Indiana.
He married a younger woman in the 1820's when he was in his 40s. Then he had at least 10 children. Where he was prior to 1820 is a mystery.
One of McKinney Carter's sons was named Thomas W. Carter. I am somewhat confident that McKinney named his son Thomas W. for his brother who, by the mid-1820's, was a few miles away (living in Jackson Co., Indiana). If I find Thomas W., I may find My McKinney.
McKinney Carter was in eastern TN from 1808 to 1814 and probably earlier. So, perhaps Thomas W. was there too? It is a tradition in our family that our Carters came from Virginia. Then they were in TN then IN.

Funny how many Carters seem to be from asteroids or space ships! I have felt
that way for twenty years of research
James Perry Carter born 30 May 1860 in TN (no other location). Move to AR
sometime before 1887, when he married Laura L. Pendley in Conway, Faulkner,
AR. Family stories say he was of English descent and played the violin. He
worked in and around Arkansas for the railroad and was living in Hugo, OK at
the time of his death in 1910. Had sisters. Flora and Ann and brothers
Horace and Bud. Have searched Census records for both TN and AR without
success before 1900!
Anyone out there?

Here's another alien!
For those of you who have been on the list a while, this will probably be a
repeat for you.
My gg-grandfather is "Bud" Woodford Ritchison/Richardson CARTER was born 29
Dec 1849 in Jackson (now Clay) County, Tennessee. On June 28, 1878 in Clay
County, TN, he married Susan Mary SPEAR, the daughter of Zachariah and Susan
Mary LEASTER SPEAR. To date, I have located 9 children born to this
marriage. I have no idea if Bud had any siblings, or parents for that
matter!
You can see photos of my gg-grandfather, as well as many others, including
many unknown and named unknowns at:

Her first husband was James JOHNSON, probably of Iroquois County,
Illinois and 2nd husband and my descendent was Scott S. ETHINGTON.
>From Census records Elizabeth's father was born in Ohio and mother
in Pennsylvania.

They came from where???
One cold starry night, a bright object briefly appeared in the western sky over eastern Tennessee. Only a few people saw it as there were very few inhabitants. The best we can determine, this happened in the few years before 1806.
This object landed in the forest and several dozen people were deposited on the frozen earth. These people came well-equipped with wagons, food, tools of trade, and even their livestock. In the days that followed, they purchased with gold they brought some land and raised their families in a dignified manner. They never mentioned how they were educated, but it was obvious that a few of them would make good leaders, justices of the peace, and religious folk.
As time went on they kept the name they had started with, and that name was Carter. In late-1814 the Carters, especially McKinney Carter, and his family left for Indiana where he once again bought land. His wife Rachel had given him 5 sons and one daughter: Matthew, Thomas W., Benjamin M., Robert, Cullen Wesley, and Elizabeth.
Nothing remains in 2001 of their ancestry, but seeing that they came in a bright light, their ancestry is probably out of this world. Perhaps this is just a story and their real home was in Virginia and not across the Milky Way. But judging from the lack of records found to this date, I would accept a homeland in the skies just the same.
If any of you has "seen" this family in the records of Tennessee or Virginia, would you please let me know. I would be grateful to know that my lineage wasn't grafted in by an alien species.
Thank you.

A PERFECT example of what the internet can do for us with our genealogy.
Someone, somewhere, at some time will help in getting our data proven and up
to date. I applaud this very much and the sophisticated way Margaret
corrected things.

David...........I'm afraid you have some misinformation concerning your
Joseph Carter. The Joseph Carter that md. Catherine Ammon was from
Middlesex Co., VA. In the "Christ Church Parish Records of Middlesex Co.,
VA" you have the marriage of Joseph Carter & Catherine Ammon of 1 Dec. 1731.
Joseph's parents were William Carter & Mary Goodloe.....he was baptized 30
April 1704 in Middlesex Co., VA.
Joseph & Catherine had the following children: Joseph, John, Mary,
Elizabeth, Robert, George, Catherine & an unknown child. They moved to

Joseph & Catherine's son Joseph went to Buckingham Co., VA & then to
Bedford Co., VA where he died about 1813. Their son John md. a "Susannah"
& ended up in Orange Co., VA.
I don't know much about the other children, but they were in Spotsylvania
Co., VA for a long time.
I sincerely hope you will correct your website so not to mislead other
researchers in their Carter search.

I have a Dudley Carter born abt. 1745 (don't know where-maybe VA?) and
died in Edgefield County SC in 1800. Administrator of his estate was
Matthew Gentry. Appraisers of his estate were F. Hardy, Enos Howard,
James Hardy, Edward Wood. His wife named Sarah_____ who died Aug. 1804.
His sons were Thomas, John, and Joseph. His daughters were Sarah m.
Hiram Howard, Elizabeth m. Matthew Gentry, unknown female m. William
Atkins.
I first pick up Dudley Carter in Edgefield in 1772 when he recorded a
plat in Granville District. He had land on Stephensons Creek in
Edgefield. He served as a Lt. in the SC militia during Rev. War. The
families his daughters married into were all residents of Edgefield.
There are other Carter families in Edgefield in the 1770-1800 time frame
but I cannot connect them to each other or to my Dudley. 2 of the
others are a Col. John Carter and a Capt Thomas Carter.
I need help in locating Dudley's parents and siblings.

I quit this list last month because of all the "Virus Warnings". It is common sense to have an anti-virus program and update it on a regular basis. If you update routinely, there is no way you can open or forward an infected file.
Now...back to genealogy...who's got James Carter hid in their files?

"Anyone on this list that has family connections to CARTER families that
lived in 1700's in Surry Co., NC and the surrounding counties of Surry?
Benjamin CARTER is one of the families...from Michelle Moreland Orlando".
I have a Samuel CARTER b, ca 1728 Morris Co., NJ - d. 8/1815 Surry County,
NC. married twice, with 2nd wife Susannah PIPES?. It is believed by my
CARTER family researcher that Samuel is the son of Benjamin CARTER , b. ca
1706 NJ - d. 2/1792 NJ. Samuel has siblings Rachel CARTER who married Joseph
BRUEN and Benjamin CARTER who married Abigail LADNER. This Benjamin moved to
Ohio in 1836.
My Samuel CARTER is believed to be the son of Benjamin CARTER of NJ even
though Benjamin left no will naming his children. Samuel was a miller as was
Benjamin and his father Barnabas I. Shortly after Benjamin died in 1792
leaving a large enough estate to buy some land, my Samuel, who was a land
speculator as well as a miller, purchased 299 acres in Wilkes Co., NC, which
is what a land speculator would no doubt do with an inheritance, and he had
not purchased land since 1787 and that was his last purchase, which he sold
in 1794. Ephraim CARTER, son of my Samuel CARTER applied for a Revolutionary
War pension in 1832 in Surry Co., NC stating that he was born 1760 in NJ
near Morristown. Simeon CARTER, son of my Samuel CARTER, also born NJ
married Catharine and had several children born in Surry Co., NC - John
CARTER b. 2/4/1791 Surry Co., NC - d. 3/2/1859 VA; Daniel CARTER, b. 1791
Surry Co., NC - d. 1880-1890 Tazewell Co., VA; Samuel CARTER, b. 1794 Surry
Co., NC; Joel CARTER and William CARTER, b. ca 1790 NC.
Are any of these the CARTER's you are looking for?
Marianne Clapp Clagett

No, but thanks for asking. You guys who are doing history in the 1700's are
very lucky. I can't get my greatgrandpa any further than 1850.
