If your Carter lineage is difficult to find you may try this site.
It also contains names other than Carter. If you think you have Cherokee
ancestors you might give it a try.

I thought that this might be what you are looking for in the way of maps--was
just posted on another list but I think this is the one I have used before

Hi Annmaree,
I recognized you from the Izard list---am fascinated with this name Mahlon
Carter, so I ran a search. Came back with a 1810 Census entry for Carter,
Mahlon Loudon Co., VA pg 279 VASla602584
Also, there are CARTER, Mahlon "War of 1812" Records,
It truly looks like a lot of branches used that name as handed down thru the
generations!
As an aside, I ran a search on Dallas CARTER----interesting stuff turned up
1850 Mortality Index Carter, Dallas P. Fauquier Co., VA 6 yrs old M d. Dec
b. in VA cause of death Scarlet Fever Id# MRT 46_1138
>From Fed Census Index there were in 1870
Carter, Dallas in both Cumberland Co., KY pg 018 Burkesville Pct. KY 01332308
& Carter, Dallas in Jefferson Co., WV pg 545 Grant twnp WV569 14772
then, in 1891
Carter, Dallas in Shelby Co., TN pg 1925 Dist 8 male voters TN 1891 Voters
List

Hope this helps someone!

P.S. I was reluctant to run James or Jim Carter just because of the shear
numbers I would have gotten back. I will go back later and just search AR for
Carter with some of the given names as control. Will get back to this later.
Hi lists,
I am looking for my long lost cousin. Just found out that my Buster Brown Carter and Mryle Unknown Carter have a daughter name Paula Jean Carter.
Buster died in 1965 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, leaving a daughter name Paula Jean Carter. I do not know how old is Paula, whether she was born in Texas or in Oklahoma. Did you ever heard of Paula Jean Carter? Any information will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Teresa
Does this John F. Carter belong to anyone?
As you see this was on the Clay Co., AR list just now.
Hope it helps someone!

Hi All,
Hoping someone can help me locate the graves of some of my CARTER family.
These are all siblings of my g-grandmother Earnest CARTER CARNEY, and the
children of W. R. CARTER and Susan Mary SPEAR. They all died in Clay
County, TN. They are:
- Nelly CARTER: d. April 1898 (could be listed as infant)
- Sarah CARTER - b. 1879 d. 1894
- Lilly CARTER - d. June 1891 (could be listed as infant)
- Johnny CARTER - b. Mar 1881 d. Aug 1901 -Note: fatally shot by John COX
on Dry Creek. Cox survived despite suffering three gunshot wounds.
As far as the area of the county, I'm assuming that it would be part of
Clay County, that was once Monroe County, Kentucky although I'm not
positive. Some of the children are listed as being born in Clay while the
others are born in Monroe. Going back and forth between the two counties.
On the 1880 Clay County Census the family is found in District 2. I've yet
to come up with a map showing the districts. The parents were born in
Jackson County, TN in what is now Clay County. Wish I had more to go on!
Just have the research a cousin (who has passed) did. He didn't list his
sources well enough on the family group sheets I have...trying to find out
more about his research...
Thanks in advance for any help you can lend!!

Joseph J Carter, b ca 1808 VA, evidently came through Kentucky. I am
wondering if he was part of the Barran Co KY Carter migration. His wife,
Juliet Luckett, was from Barran County. Henry Carter and Samuel Luckett
both filed for Rev War pensions in Barran County. Perhaps Henry and Joseph
are related?
Joseph J and Juliet were in Cass Co, MO in 1860 and Kansas City, MO in 1880.
Thanks for any help.

Dear Listers, I am very grateful for the generous help I've been receiving from some of you and I just want to share the text and sources concerning Hannah Neale and James Carter of Stafford VA with all of you:
[From the OLD CARTER PRAYERBOOK]printed in 1662: "James 8th son was Borne on Christmas Day 1684 it being Thursday at 2 in the morning & was Christened at Home on Sundy. Mr. Jno Edwards, Mr. Tho. Wilkes & Mrs. Edwards standing as God parents." also "Mrs. Hannah Carter departed the Life on 9th Octo. 1722 and left a sorriful husband and 4 tender children Tho. Danl Presly & Hannah."
"James Carter married twice, first on Oct 3, 1715, to Hannah Neale, daughter of Daniel Neale; she died Oct. 9, 1722, leaving children Thomas, Daniel, Presley and Hannah. On Aug. 12, 1724, he married Mary, daughter of Hugh Brent of Lancaster County." [Family History: Southern Genealogies #1, 1600s-1800s CD: HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES, Vol. XX, by Boddie, "Thomas Carter of Virginia, with Related Families Reno, Tipton, Skipwith, Dale" ..., Page 20]
"James Carter (son of Capt Thomas) married August 10, 1724, Mary Brent, daughter of Hugh Brent of Lancaster County [VA]. She was probably his second wife. They removed to Stafford [VA] where they had the following children born: Joseph b. 1725; John b. May 7, 1727; James b. March 31, 1729; William (twin) b. January 11, 1731; George (twin) b. January 11, 1731; Catherine b. April 1, 1735; Charles b. October 10, 1743." [Joseph Lyon Miller, THE DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS CARTER (First Edition)p 603]
"James Carter, "an honest, good man" , died October 24, 1743. [Obituary, Overwharton Register.] September 4, 1747, Joseph, John and George Carter, sons of James Carter had a deed for 1137 acres of land in which their father James Carter of Stafford dec'd is spoken of as a brother of Joseph Carter of Lancaster." [Miller, First Edition p 604]
ABSTRACT OF WILL OF DANIEL NEALE:
"Neale, Daniel, gent., 19 December 1713; 2 March 1713. One negro to dau. Hannah Neale; sons Presley, Daniel, Christopher, and Rodham one negro each; wife Ursula one negro and she to be exx; dau. Frances Neale one negro; son Presley plantation where I live. Residue of estate to wife and children." [WESTMORELAND COUNTY, VA WILLS, 1654-1800][COLONIAL FAMILIES, Volume IV, Neale Family 382-384.]

ROBESON COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK
"We may not all do great things, but we all can do small things in a great
way"
We have had an overwhelming response to our initial announcement concerning
the upcoming Robeson County Heritage Book. I have also had multiple
questions, and this is what I wanted to address with this posting. One
thought that I would like to express to everyone before you read this. You
do not have to be a Rhodes Scholar to submit anything to this book, and you
are not expected to send in lengthy scholarly works [unless you just want
to]. We just want to hear about your ancestors in the ways that you know how
to tell it! Please remember the above quote when writing your article(s):
"We may not all do great things, but we all can do small things in a great
way"
Many of us would like to publish stories about our ancestors, but let's be
realistic, not many of us can. This is our chance to get the stories of our
ancestors in print, and in many cases at no cost [see Guidelines listed
below].
Please read over these preliminary guidelines, and then if you are interested
in submitting story(ies) about your ancestors, or just would like to be put
on the brochure mailing list, then send us your name and mailing address to
the e-mail list at the bottom of this page. Also, please forward, or copy,
this notice, and send it to anyone else you know who has ancestral roots here
in Robeson County, North Carolina.
· * * * * * * * * * PRELIMINARY GUIDELINES * * * * * * * * * *
Who is eligible to participate in submitting articles?
1. Present residents of Robeson Co NC.
2. Former residents of Robeson Co NC.
3. Those with roots in Robeson Co NC.
When I submit a family story on a particular ancestor(s), what qualifies the
story?
The main Subject/Ancestor must have:
1. Been born, married, or died in Robeson Co NC, or
2. Resided in Robeson Co NC sometime during their natural lives, or
3. Had a documented presence here in Robeson Co NC sometime during their
natural lives.
How much may I submit, and what is the cost?
FAMILY STORIES AND HISTORY
1. Each household is encouraged to send in 500 words of their family history
and one photograph. Once qualified, this amount will be published at no cost
to the submitter. If your story runs over 500 words, or you would like to
include extra photos, then number 3 below applies.
2. If the main subject of your story was here in the county in or before
[Date has not been establish by the committee], then "First Families" status
will apply, and then you may and are encouraged to submit and additional 500
words of history and another picture per household. Once qualified this
amount may be published at no cost to the submitter. If your story runs over
the additional 500 words, or you would like to include extra photos, then
number 3 below applies.
3. Additional words (over 500 described above) are 10¢ per word. Extra
photos, double wide, or deep are $12.50 each.
4. Abbreviations/numbers above five letters equal two words, and punctuation
does not affect this.
ADDITIONAL ARTICLES, STORIES AND HISTORY
1. Histories of Churches, Clubs, and Organizations. Each allowed 250 words
and one photograph free. For additional words and photographs see
Number 3 in Family Stories and History above.
2. History of County, Communities and other major topics allowed 600-750
words and one photo at committee discretion. Those recommended, but not
limited to: Early Settlement, Early Inhabitants, Early Migrations, Life in
the early years, Military involvement, Historic Places and Events,
Communities, Education [past and present], Transportation, Medical History,
Historic Businesses, Personalities, and Miscellaneous Articles. If you are
interested in writing a Topical, please contact the Committee for more
details.
3. Current Businesses, Tributes, and Memorials will be at the end of the
book. These are the only pages which cost the submitters. If you are
interested contact committee for details.
The above is basicly what we are looking for in articles. The Robeson County
Heritage Book Brochures will have additional information, i.e. What Will I
Write?, Directions on submitting Articles, Directions on submitting
Photographs, Writing assistance, Submission Deadlines, Order Form,
Restrictions, etc…
If you would like to be placed on our mailing list to receive a Brochure,
then please send us your name and mailing address by private e-mail to:

SUGGESTED GUIDELINES to HELP GET ANSWERS
by Tim Carter
If I am going to be a writer and try to get your attention so that you will
help me, I must be courteous to you; I must be thoughtful enough to present
materials in such a manner as to get and keep your attention; I must write
my material in a way that makes it fast, easy, and pleasant
to read. With these thoughts in mind, consider that the following are NOT
RULES, but they are SUGGESTED GUIDELINES for use by genealogy researchers.
Also, if you are a member/user on a list which has an owner or moderator
who specifies how to post to that particular list, please, try to post to
that list in accordance with his/her instructions.
1) What are you talking about? What is your Subject?
2) Are you shouting at the reader?
3-7) Typing names so they are easy to read.
8) Where and How to Reply.
9-10) Flaming.
11) Are you less considerate and more disrespectful
than the flamer? than the sympathizers?
12) You want to reply, but, Are You Ready?
1) Do you really want me to read your message? Many users of the lists
use the subject line to speed up their search. Messages with blank subject
lines are deleted in bulk before any reading is attempted. Both the sender
and the receiver have "lost" when a connection they have for each other is
not made because of a subject omitted.
2) Generally, type everything in lower case (small) letters. Typing
everything in ALL CAPS is considered SHOUTING AT THE READER.
3) ALWAYS type SURNAMES in upper case (CAPITAL) letters.
4) When listing SURNAMES only, enter a comma and two spaces between the
names. This makes for faster, easier reading:
CARTER, DELOACH, KIRBY, LEE, PEDRON (PLEASE, do not space between
letters of the name, and do not use special characters within a name)
5) DO NOT use the asterisk * or the slash / as a separator of SURNAMES.
Use this same rule for applying other special characters in your writings.
This is hard on the eyes, and some of us won't read it. Therefore, you and
I might miss a perfect opportunity to find a connection to one of the names
we are both researching.
6) Generally, type names as follows:
SURNAME, First Second Third "Nickname" Title (Although it won't always work
out this way, try to make it a standard way of writing names.) Example:
CARTER, Elisha Joseph Goodwin "Joe" Rev
7) When listing SURNAMES with locations, try to make the listings as
columns if possible. At least enter some spaces to make for easier, faster
reading:
CARTER > NC, SC, MS, AR LEE > NC, SC, TN, AR
JONES > FL, AL, TN, GA OWENS > NC, GA, LA
KIRBY > AR WOOD > TN,AR
Realize that the progression of states is not meant to be alphabetical, but
represents the general movement (or migration) of the family or individual
being researched, and are the locations being searched.
8) When you reply (respond) to a message received on a list, PLEASE, be
aware of where your reply is going "before you send it.". Some of the
lists are set up so the REPLY automatically returns your message to the
list. Other lists automatically return your replies to the originator of the
message. AGAIN, PLEASE double check the return address where you are
sending the answer to that post. A BIG THANK YOU for your help on this.
9) Please, do not flame someone (put them down rather rudely) for something
they have done. The individual may be new and did not realize what was
correct and proper. Or, an individual can be in a hurry and just do things
wrong. (Personally, I do not wish to reduce <degrade> myself to
the low level of flaming someone. I have been flamed and know how bad it
made me feel, even though I had not intended to hurt or upset anyone.)
Consider that in most instances the act is not on purpose, but accidental.
If you must reply, be courteous, polite, and positive and send
them a private note.
10) Above all, DO NOT flame someone publicly on one of the lists. It is
bad manners on the part of the person doing the flaming, and shows
disrespect toward all other members of the list. (They do not want to hear
the flamer's whining about what someone has supposedly done to the flamer
or to them. That is why there are always so many rude, ill-natured replies
afterwards.)
11) Do you reply to the flamer, and send it to the list? Then, you have
been more disrespectful to fellow list members than was the flamer. You
have become a part of the continuing nuisance to the list. Does someone
have a loss, and accidentally post it to the list? Are you one of the
sympathizers that also post your condolences to the list? You have become
a part of the continuing nuisance to the list. Are you one of those that
posts to the list in anger or dismay, trying to get the sympathizers to
stop posting? You have added fuel to the fire - you helped increase the
problem. Please stop and think before posting ANY OFF SUBJECT REPLY to a
list.
12) Do you really want to flame someone? Go look in the mirror. That
person you are looking at knows exactly how you feel and what you are
thinking. Therefore, that person knows exactly how to take what you are
saying. Furthermore, if that person in the mirror smiles at you, you are
going to have to smile back. And, if you smile at the person in the mirror
and that person in the mirror does not smile back at you, you are not ready
to write to anyone yet.
Now, let's work together and find some genealogy answers.
Thank you.
