Good Morning Everyone,
A couple of years ago, I posted the 1820-1870 CARTER Census Index for GEORGIA
by an Alpha listing. These can be found in the CARTER-L archives at
ROOTSWEB.COM
I would like to re-visit these files and re-post the CARTER Census Index by
County - with a description of the creation and formation of that county.
There are several of us researching the CARTER families in GEORGIA. If you
should recognize any of these families, please share with us.
Thank you,
Donna Eldridge
Virginia born Absalom CARTER (1781-1843) was the son of John CARTER and Nancy Ann JARRET. The Carters moved into South Carolina, and John received an American Revolutionary Land Grant located south of the Tugaloo River on both sides of Gum Log Creek in Franklin County, Georgia in 1785/1789. The family made their home there, and later moved to Jones County, Georgia, before moving into the Alabama Territory, Butler County, and area.
Other children of John and Nancy Ann CARTER were Thomas, David, Jarrett, John Jr., William, Frances, Oliver, and Alfred.
Who were the parents of John Carter? Where did he serve in the American Revolution? What state awarded the land grant? When and where did John CARTER and Nancy Ann JARRET marry? Need proof of John Carter's Revolutionary War service.
If anyone is researching this family, please contact me.
Thanks,

Good Morning Wayne, I see that I haven't replied to your email..I'm sorry!
I do appreicate your speculations and they make sense to me also as a
possibility. I will keep your message just in case something comes up.
Elizabeth's father was born in Ohio and her mother (name unk.) in Pa.
She was born in Indiana and her first born in Illinois. Her children were
born in De Kalb County, Mo. and Atchison County, Kansas. Elizabeth and
Scott S. ETHINGTON are both buried in Wilson County, Ks. where they spent
the last years of their lives. Scott died in 1905 and "Lizzie" in 1911. (or
was in 1916..this is from the top of my head) Daughters married probably in
Kansas as according to his pension papers (10th Indiana Co B) they also
lived in Shawnee, Wabaunsee, and Greenwood Counties, Ks.
Surnames being RAE, MOSS, and BALDWIN (of Cowley Co., Ks.). I believe that
Laura Sanra "Dora" Ethington Moss died around 22 years (abt 1888) but I
don't have any further information.
Scott and Elizabeth's oldest daughter, Olive "Ollie" S. Ethington married
Laban Washington MALLORY and they lived in Lyon County, Ks. (My
gGrandparents) The only son was William S. ETHINGTON "Willie" and I have a
marriage that took place in Wichita, Ks. in 1919 with Grace GRADY but this
may be a second marriage as he would have been in his 40's being born 1879.
Sorry, I get carried away but these are all of the surnames that I have
concerning the descendants of Elizabeth Jane CARTER JOHNSON ETHINGTON.
Thanks again, Marie Cook

Subject: Elizabeth CARTER
Elizabeth Jane CARTER b. 12-Aug-1838 as later in Wilson County, Kansas
I can't recall if I passed this along earlier or not. And, I'm not sure if
its helpful.
My ggg grandfather, John Carter (b: 1829), moved to Wilson Co, KS in late
1870 (or 72). Obit and biography state that a brother moved with him to
Wilson Co. They came to KS from IN, but John (at least) was born in OH.
Unfortunately, I do not have the names of any brothers ( or sisters ). But
maybe the IN and OH information is somewhat useful. Seems like I recall
your earlier e-mails mentioning IN, with an OH possibility.
If related at all, it seems like a 1838 birth date would make Elizabeth
most likely a sister rather than a niece. For what its worth, my mother's
name was Elizabeth and sometimes the names run in the family.
So, the best I have to offer is a lot of speculation, but who knows?
Regards,
Wayne
Hello,
Does anyone have a William Carter b. about 1821 living in Allen County,
Kentucky in 1850?
The images of the 1850 census are so hard to read on this particular
page...might someone have the information?
This is what I think it says:
page 140
55/57 Wm Carter 39 M Farmer 100 Kentucky
?.K?. Carter 37 F
?. ? Carter 16 M
M?. E?. Carter 12 F
S?. ?. Cook 9 F
S?. F?. Cook 5 F
I think the 16 year old Male is my husband's 2nd great grandfather, Joseph
T. Carter.
A Joseph T. Carter accompanied a Susan Poe when she applied for a widow's
pension after her husband, Austin Poe, died in the Civil War. He was listed
as her guardian. Susan's maiden name is Cook and she would be the right age
to be the 9 year old female Cook in that census, if indeed that is what the
census actually says.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Melody Carter

Hi Carter's List,
Does anybody have Carter's ancestors who come from Perry County, Illinois??
I have Albert Carter who married to Lucinda Presswood in 1887 and Samuel A. Carter who married to Etta McClelland in 1892; both married in Perry County, Illinois.
But Albert and Samuel Carter have a brother name John Henry Carter who married in Saline County, Illinois in 1891.
If any ring the bell that your Carter's could be from Illinois, would like to hear from you.
Albert, Samuel and John Henry Carter's parents are: Douglas Carter and Sarah C. Vontrisse/Vantrease.
Thank,
Teresa Young
Finally a new lead on my William Carter b. 1806 VA. Have obtained
another bio for his son that lists the father of William Carter as James
Carter. It states, "James Carter was of English ancestry and a native of
Virginia".
Keeping fingers crossed here, Is there anyone on the list that has a
James Carter born and married in VA that left and went to TN? It is
possible but not a given that there is another son by the name of
Joseph. That son would have been born more than likely in TN.
Thanks
