Hi!
Does anyone know which Solomon was the one listed on the 1820 & 1830
Censuses in Russell Co, VA? From his age on those censuses, it appears
he was born 1780-1790.
2 possible matches:
1) Solomon, b 15 NOV 1789 in Amherst County, Virginia d 1860 in Marion
County, Missouri m Sallie Ballinger 19 FEB 1813 in Garrad County,
Kentucky
OR
2) Solomon, b aft 1770, d 1837 (don't know where) m. Anne ?
Both of above are descendants of Peter Carter & Judith Norris, by
different lines.
Or he could have been a different Solomon, of course...
Any info or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi I am not new to this list but have to put out the other Carter's in my line. I am a Carter from my dad, but then my mother's grandmother's maiden name is Carter also. So I am searching for two different lines here. Gets very confusing, ha. I don't have a lot on this line at all only my G-grandmothers name and her brothers and sisters, and her parents which is my gg-grandparents. So if anyone can link to this line I would appreciate hearing from you.

This is all I have on this line of my Carter's on my mother's side. Hope I have better luck with them than I have had with the Carter's on my father's side, ha. So if anyone out there thinks this looks familiar to their line please email me.
Thanks in advance.

My gggg-grandfather was McKinney CARTER. What is his ancestry?? Where did he come from?? Where did he live while in Tennessee?
McKinney CARTER, born 1780's possibly in VA, maybe in TN; was married to Rachel __?__ when he died on or before 23 Nov 1832 in Jackson Co., IN. McKinney CARTER was in eastern Tennessee as early as 1806 or 1808. Then, in late-1814, he moved to southern Indiana. He first appeared in Washington Co., IN (later called Jackson Co.) when he bought 154.5 acres of land on Jan. 17, 1815. By 1820 he was a Justice of the Peace. He may have had a brother named Thomas W. Carter who was born in 1780 and lived several miles from McKinney.
The six (6) children listed below were named as heirs of McKinney CARTER in probate records. (McKinney's widow, Rachel, married Clemons DOWDEN on 14 Jul 1834 in Jackson Co., Indiana.)
CHILDREN:
1. Matthew CARTER, b. Abt. 1806 in TN or ?; m. Allie LANGLEY on 25 Feb 1829 in Jackson Co., IN. (Don't know what happened to him!)
2. Thomas W. CARTER, b. 10 Aug 1808 in TN, m. Eliza NAYLOR (1808-1903) on 27 Dec 1827 in Jackson Co., IN; d. 11 May 1869 in Sullivan Co., MO. (My ancestor)
3. Benjamin M. CARTER, b. Abt. 1811 in TN; m. Margaret NAYLOR on 8 Jul 1832 in Jackson Co., IN; d. Aft. 1860 in MO or IL.
4. Robert CARTER, b. Abt. 1814 in Eastern TN; m. 1st, Anna SANTLAND on 25 Sep 1832 in Jackson Co., IN; m. 2nd, Cynthia Ann STURGEON on 30 Dec 1847 in Brown Co., IN; d. 17 Oct 1877 in Benton Co., AR.
5. Cullen Wesley CARTER, b. Abt. 1816 in Jackson Co., IN; m. Milley GREER on 5 Aug 1838 in Hancock Co., IN; d. Abt. 1844, possibly in Wayne Co., IN.
6. Elizabeth CARTER, b. Abt. 1818 in Jackson Co., IN.
Please see the web site I created for the Carters of Jackson Co., IN. It contains much more info.

Hi, again, Pauline.
I don't have a whole lot on Thornton Carter, but I'm happy to give you what
I've got.
According to the P.G. Fulkerson Papers of Claiborne, Co., TN, Thornton Carter
came from NC to Clinch River about 1830. He married Dilly Harden. [I believe
this name is incorrect. The evidence is that her last name was Harward.]
His children were: Russell, unmarried; Ross; Sterling, married a Cole;
Needham; Martin; Dilly, married Cleavland Hurst; Frankie, married Capt. Peter
Herrell; Josiah, married Catherine Herrell. [My ancestors] Ross, Sterling,
Needham and Martin Carter moved to MO. Rev. Marion Carter and Mrs. R. R.
[Reuben Rufus] Sanders [Saunders] are children of Josiah.
My line is through Josiah Pennell Carter who married Catherine Herrell.
Their daughter, Mary Catherine Carter married Reuben Rufus Saunders.
I can send you a "Roll Call" if you're interested in knowing all the ensuing
generations. Otherwise, I'll just stop here.
As far as Thornton himself is concerned, I have often wondered whether or not
he had another wife before he married Dilly Harward in Wake Co. After all,
if he was born in 1778 and didn't marry until 1811, that means he was thirty
three years old before he ever had a family. It seems unusual, however, I
can't find any evidence of any other marriage and all the children I have
listed above seem to be Dilly's...
He lived to be at least 72 years old because he appears in the Claiborne
County, TN census of 1850. According to a Claiborne County tax list from
1839, he owned 200 acres of land worth about $200.00. I have no clue when he
actually died and I have been absolutely unable to find a place of burial. I
know that there was a Thornton Carter living in Franklin Co., TN in 1860, but
I haven't seen the actual census information. I don't believe it's my
Thornton, but if I find out that this particular person is 82 years old, then
I guess I'll have to give it another look! If this person does turn out to
be my ancestor, then that would certainly explain why I can't find him buried
in Claiborne County!
That's about it... Mostly I'm anxious to find Thornton's parents so I can
put this last piece of the puzzle together.
I look foward to hearing from you again soon. Carolyn
Looking for any information re above named person. James Carter was born around 1802 at Shepton Mallet in Somerset near Wells. I know from D/C in 1858 (Australia) that his father was named George Carter but I don't know his mother.
James was transported to New South Wales per "Vittoria" 1829 as a convict. Any information or contact with relatives appreciated.
Barbara Corrigan. Canberra ACT, Australia.
I need help from all you Carter cousins out there...
I've been trying to sort through this web for quite awhile and I've put part
of what I have on the two Virginia/NC/TN Thornton Carters in chart form so
anyone of you who has an expert eye and more experience than I do can help me
figure this thing out. I know that my Thornton -- Thornton No. 1 -- has
parents out there somewhere... Does anyone recognize his line? Thanks so
much for any help you can provide!
Carolyn
