Samuel A. Carter b. about 1861 married
Allie Manerva Janie Roark
At least one of their children was born in Allen County, Kentucky.
I found Janie in the 1910 Allen County, Kentucky census shown below:
1910 Allen County, Kentucky Census
Janie Corter
Enumeration District: 0009 Color: W
Age: 44 Birth Place: Kentucky
Visit: 0123
County: Allen
Relatives: Son Luster 18, Kentucky
Son Henry 16, Tennessee
Daughter Athey 13, Kentucky
Son Porter 11, Kentucky
Daughter Almer 09, Kentucky
“Luster” is Lester who married Daisy Payne
“Athey” is Athie who married Will Jent
“Almer” is Alma who married Luther Vaughn Stinson
Other children were
Berkley, who died of Whooping cough, no other information
Tildy, who died of Measles, no other information
Mertie who married Thomas Franklin Shockley, and had 2 sons. I have other
information on Mertie and Thomas
William Noah who married Queen Victoria Swindle, my husband’s line and I
have
much on them and their descendants.
and Porter who married Tildy Belle Meadows and had two children with her.
Porter died of T.B.
I am stuck on the parents of Samuel. A scrap of paper, written by one of
Samuel’s grand
daughters has Dade and Sue Adeline as his parents.
This is the information I was given on the siblings of Samuel A. Carter:
John A. Carter married Frances Patterson. I have found some information on
them
through Macon County, Tn. census records.
James A. Carter married Luden Turner . I have found information on them,
and through
them was able to find Janie Roark Carter, living near by.
Joseph Bailey Carter married Dollie Payne, no other information
Allie Carter married Matt Shaw, no other information
Mandy Carter married Billy Shaw, no other information
Running searches on the Shaw surname, I ran across these two entries in the
1910 Allen
County Census index
Madison H Shaw
Enumeration District: 0009 Color: W
Age: 53 Birth Place: Kentucky
Visit: 0116
County: Allen
Relation: Husband
Relatives: Wife Ollie S 47, Kentucky
Daughter Ider S 21, Kentucky
Son Joseph W 17, Kentucky
Daughter Lucy A 15, Kentucky
Daughter Amy S 12, Kentucky
Daughter Ada 05, Kentucky
and
Amoda Shaw
Enumeration District: 0009 Color: W
Age: 37 Birth Place: Kentucky
Visit: 0117
County: Allen
Relatives: Mother Chartie A Cearter 74, Kentucky
Daughter Ethel Shaw 15, Tennessee
Daughter Willie E 12, Tennessee
I believe that Ollie Shaw is my Allie Carter Shaw, and that Amoda Shaw is my
Mandy
Carter Shaw. Better than that, I believe Chartie A. Cearter is the mother
of my Samuel A.
Carter. The District number and visit number on each entry struck my
interest. It looks to
me that Chartie should be Charity, and that Willie Shaw may have been named
after her
father.
Even more interesting is Lucy Shaw, daughter of Ollie and Madison Shaw. I
found a
Lucy Shaw born September 27, 1894 who married A. Hasten Shockley, son of
William
Wesley Shockley and Nancy Elizabeth Roark.
Both Nancy Elizabeth Roark and Allie Manerva Janie Roark are daughters of
Asa W.
Roark and Charity Matilda Doss. Would anyone know if this is the same Lucy
Shaw?
Any comments on the likeliness of the above, much appreciated.

Johnson County Ky marriage records list the marriage of Shelby
"Nicholas" and Margaret Ann Welch on 24 Dec 1850.
http://www.lni.net/kahamilton/vitals/johnson_co_marriages.htm
Shelby and Margaret both appear in the 1850 census of Johnson
County as age 18:
#384 Harris, William 55 M Farmer Va
Aleann 37 F Ky
Pleasant 17 M Ky
Lydia J 12 F Ky
Henry C 11 M Ky
Rachel E 9 F Ky
Julia A 4 F Ky
Littleton T 3 M Ky
Nickell, Shelby 18 M Farmer Ky <====
#140 Welch, James 45 M Farmer Va
Isabella 36 F Va
Eliza J 20 F Va
Margaret 18 F Va <====
Mary E 16 F Va
Thomas 13 M Va
James 10 M Va
Peter 7 M Va
William 6 M Va
John 3 M Va
Nancy K 3/12 F Va
By 1880, Shelby and Margaret were living in Elliott County,
in Moccassin precinct:
Family #112:
Nicles, Shelvey 46 farmer Ky Ky Ky
Margaret 46 wife Va Va Va
Shelvey 17 son Ky Va Va
Mary 12 dau Ky Va Va
Robert L. 8 son Ky Va Va
Harris, Ale A. 68 mother Ky Va -- (widowed)
Note the match between "Ale A Harris, mother" in the 1880 census
and Aleann Harris in the 1850 census. It looks like Shelby's father
had died and his mother remarried to William Harris. Uncertain
whether all the Harris childen in 1850 are Aleann's, or whether
some of them are children of William and a previous wife.
Also listed in 1880 Elliott Co Moccasin precinct are the following
two families who are probably sons of Shelby & Margaret:
Family #91:
Nicles, James 20 farmer Ky Ky Va
Mary L. 19 wife Ky Ky Va
William S. 5 mo son Ky Ky Ky
Family #42:
Nicles, John 22 farmer Ky Ky Va
Julia 21 wife Oh Oh Oh
Marion W. 1 son Ky Ky Oh
Lucy 1 mo dau Ky Ky Oh
I suspect that Shelby and Margaret moved out of Johnson County
shortly after their marriage, because there are no birth records
listed in Johnson County for 1852 - 1861 with them as parents.
I am trying to find the 1860 census reading for this Shelby Nickells
family. (The 1870 census reading would also be nice, but not as
critical.) The reason is an attempt to determine whether they are
the parents of Amanda NICKELLS/NICHOLS who married Commodore RIDDLE
of Rowan County, Kentucky, about 1870. Amanda was said to be born in
Elliott County (which was formed in 1869 from parts of Morgan and
Carter counties.) She is listed as age 17 with Commodore RIDDLE in
Rowan Co., marked as married within the year. The Shelby NICKELLS
family is not in the 1870 census of Elliott Co or Rowan Co, nor in
the 1860 census of Rowan Co. or Morgan Co. I have not checked other
censuses, mainly because I don't have easy access to them. Possibilities
include Carter Co. and Lawrence Co. But 1860 censuses for those
counties are not online.
Does anyone have the 1860 or 1870 censuses of Carter, Lawrence and/or
Johnson counties?
Or if you are personally familiar with this family, that would be
even better! :-)
Need parentage of above lady, Matilda NUTTERFIELD, who married James Baldon,

On May 23, 1822, Elizabeth Nutterfee,born July 10, 1810, was married to
Andrew Pittman, in Nelson Co Ky. At a later date, at an unknown location,
she married John Carter Jr. Perhaps at Shenandoah,Va.,in 1842.or perhaps in
Ky., or Indiana. According to my records, she was almost 12 years old when
she married Andrew. Does anyone have any information on either the Pittman,
or the John Carter Jr, at Shenandoah, Va.?
She may have had at least 3 children, with Andrew, Nancy Jane,1829,
Elizabeth Ann,1828, and possibly Matilda 1831.
Any help appreciated. I am trying to batter down a brick wall.
Thanks.

O.K. I confess I am totally confused!!!! Can anyone help me figure out
this mess?????
Pricy STILTNER or CARTER or WARNER Arthur.
1. Pricy was married to Lee Anderson Arthur.
I have no marriage date.
2. Pricy was b. 07Aug1869 Off of death records.
3. Pricy died of T.B. on 25Feb1923 according to the death records I have
from the Webster Co. Court House in West Virginia.
4. On the death records it states that Jackson M. STILTNER is Father and
Martha WOODS is the mother.
5. According to census records, it is possible that Elisha CARTER & Nancy
STILTNER are Jackson M. STILTNER's parents. Which would make sense because
it looks like they were never married.
6. Now........I have several Obits from the family. Pricy's husband Lee's
states he was preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Patricia Arthur. Which
throws another name kink in with the first name. Then this is what her
children's Obits. state:
(1)Blanche Mae ARTHUR Cochran - the daughter of Lee A. and Priscilla CARTER
Arthur.
(2)Opal Leone ARTHUR Goff - she was the daughter of the late Lee and
Priscilla WARNER Arthur.
(3)Herbert Hobson ARTHUR - Doesn't state.
(4)Essie Gay ARTHUR Ware - Doesn't state.
Now, I have land records from the Webster Co. Court House in Webster
Springs, WV. that state there was land given to Lee & Pricy Arthur for $1 to
take care of an Adam & Mary M. Warner, which I was just informed by someone
that Mary M. used to be an ARTHUR. (I still have to figure this connection
out - to see how Lee is related.)
Can someone help me figure this mess out?
Thanks,
Faith

Why did they have to make this so confusing for our generation?
Well here is what I have.
Pricy CARTER OR STILTNER Arthur b. 07Aug1869 d. 25Feb1923 of T.B.
On the court house death records it states that Pricy's parents were Jackson
M. Stiltner and Martha Woods.
If I have done my research correctly(Which I am always still verifying)
Nancy STILTNER and Elisha CARTER were Jackson's parents. They were never
married. Soooooooo, The Stiltner and Carter names were both used.
So my question is......Instead of searching for the Stiltner name for awhile
I am going to concentrate on the Carter name and see if anyone can fill in
any of my blanks; any info on Pricy or Priscilla Carter?
Any suggestions appreciated.
1. Still searching for birth and marriage records for Pricy.
2. And some of her children's births.
3. How does Frances COE fit into the picture for being Pricy's sister or
half sister maybe?
4. Martha WOODS, need any info regarding her. (Pricy's mother)
5. Do any WARNER'S fit in this picture any where? Or were they just
friend? I have a deed giving land to Lee and Pricy just to take care of
them. (Adam and Mary M. Warner)
Let me know what you have and I will gladly compare notes.
Thank you,
Faith
