BORN 1826 FAIRFIELD CO., SC; DIED 1888 LEE CO, FL
I have just learned that my ggg grandfather, Hardy H. Carter died in Lee

Does anyone have access to the 1880 Lee Co., FL census who can look to see if
Hardy Carter appears on it? I would be very grateful.

Kathie,
Well, we possibly have some CARTERs here that were closely related. My line
of CARTER's, William b. abt 1775 and a sister, Elisabeth CARTER b. about
1770 both are in Spencer Co., IN by about 1816. These two had a brother
named Samuel, born
probably in the 1770's, who's mentioned in correspondence but apparently
never makes the trip to Spencer Co., IN.
You're right about a Thomas CARTER in Spencer Co., IN. He's mentioned
several times in the histories of the boyhood days of Abraham LINCOLN.
Nelson Co., KY had several families of CARTERs there in the late 1700's.
My group of CARTERs and LUCEs were in Muhlenberg Co., KY 1n the 1810 KY
census.

Bryan,
We have a connection! I have information regarding
Benjamin M. Carter m. Margaret Naylor in Jackson Co,
Indiana on July 7, 1832. They moved to IL and had 5
children (Rachel, Martin, James Knox Polk, Margaret
Eva, and Thomas). I have quite a bit of information on
this line. (James KP was my gggrandfather and my
ggggrandfather - there was inner marriages in the
Carter line.) I'd be happy to trade information with
you.

RECOGNIZE ANY???
McKinney CARTER was in eastern Tennessee from 1808 to 1814; it is
possible that McKinney was in Tennessee as a child in the 1780's or
1790's. During this time period (1808-1814), he was married and by
1814, had 4 sons. He may have had a brother named Thomas W. CARTER. In
late 1814, McKinney CARTER moved to Indiana. DOES ANYONE HAVE A RECORD
OF THIS CARTER IN TENNESSEE??
McKinney CARTER, born 1780's possibly in Virginia or maybe Tennessee,
married to Rachel __?__ at the time of his death, died on or before 23
Nov 1832 in Jackson Co., Indiana.
He first appeared in Washington Co., Indiana when he bought 154.5 acres
of land on Jan. 17, 1815 (for about $1.25 an acre); this land later
became part of Driftwood Twp., Jackson Co., Indiana.
The order and year of birth of Cullen Wesley CARTER and Elizabeth CARTER

children were named as heirs of McKinney CARTER in probate records in
Jackson Co., Indiana.
McKinney CARTERs widow, Rachel, married Clemons DOWDEN on 14 Jul 1834

Sharon,
Thanks for including me in your information on Joseph Carter, but it's not
my Joseph. My Joseph Carter went from Henry Co, VA to Knox/Roane Co TN.
Lynn Marion
Hi Sharon:
I noticed you have a Robert and a James in this line. Of course they are
both common names, but the geography surrounds Clinton, Hickman County,
Kentucky, so I am wondering if there could be any connection.
Here is what I have:
Ancestors of James Thomas Carter
Generation No. 1
1. James Thomas Carter, born 1839; died August 06, 1914. He was the son
of 2. Cornelius Carter and 3. Susannah Utterback. He married (1) Amanda
Crutchfield October 24, 1861 in Hickman, Kentucky. She was the daughter of
Oliver M. Crutchfield and Mary "Polly" Burnett.
Children of James Carter and Amanda Crutchfield are:
i. James Oliver Carter, born September 30, 1862; died February 15,
1911; married Maggie (Unknown).
ii. Annie Agnes Carter, born December 26, 1864; died November 06,
1913; married James Phillips December 17, 1885.
iii. Robert Cornelius Carter, born May 23, 1867; died May 27,
1904; married Margaret Ada Campbell July 29, 1893 in Clinton, Hickman,
Kentucky.
iv. Wesley Vandolie Carter, born May 24, 1870; died September 14,
1874.
v. Affie Amanda Carter, born July 28, 1873; died July 14, 1958;
married Joe Ben Wilmurth January 11, 1888.
vi. Ida Lula Carter, born August 24, 1876; married Richard B. Reese
December 24, 1894.
vii. Lonnie Johnson Carter, born November 14, 1878; died January
31, 1922; married (1) Clara Browder November 20, 1900; married (2) Nettie
Chastain November 15, 1903.
Generation No. 2
2. Cornelius Carter, born Abt. 1808 in Anderson Co., Kentucky. He
married 3. Susannah Utterback May 13, 1833 in Anderson Co., Kentucky.
3. Susannah Utterback, born 1803 in (1818 is the date at
FamilySearch.org). She was the daughter of 6. Charles Utterback and 7.
Jemima Whitson Nelson.
Children of Cornelius Carter and Susannah Utterback are:
i. Charles Carter, born 1834.
ii. David Carter, born 1837.
1 iii. James Thomas Carter, born 1839; died August 06, 1914; married
Amanda Crutchfield October 24, 1861 in Hickman, Kentucky.
iv. Eliza Jane Carter, born April 01, 1840 in Hickman, Kentucky; died
March 07, 1904 in Hickman, Kentucky; married Nimrod Patrick Johnson July 07,
1859 in Mississpipi County, MO..
Any Help on finding a connection with Cornelius Carter would be greatly
appreciated.
Scott Carter
Dear Cynthia,
Received your kind comments regarding what little help I can offer
any line of James Carter of Bucks Co, PA. All the memos sounded so
lost. Yes, I am interested in ordering information for Mrs. Ledgerwood
original write up/novelette.
I am glad other lines have success even though I cannot verify
successfully following mine. Right now my line goes: Sharon Carter
Lengfellner(9),Harold(8), Norval(7), Martha Jane(6), Joel Anthony(5),
Richard P(4), Robert(3), Richard(2), James(1).
It is recorded by Mrs Ledgerwood there was a son Robert(3) m Alice
ok ? But how did he find his way to Rutherford Co(Williamson Co),TN
to issue Richard P ? Proved marriage bond with Sally(Sara) Win(d)row in
23 Aug, 1803 in Williamson Co. The farthest back in time we ever proved
was Joel A b 1820 d 1872, Bluford, IL, filed in Salt Lake LDS. I have
become an historian trying to figure out how Richard P and Sally ended
up in Clinton Co, IL, too...very little concrete proof.
Only this week did I discover that John "Salt Lick" Carter had a son
name Joel, which could ruin everything. Do you have any "premonitions"
that I could check out? Hundreds in this branch would like to know.
Sure we are cousins,

I want to help all those still looking for Joseph Carter b 1740s line.
My line stems from his brother Robert Carter. Joseph has such an
interesting story. Good luck.
I have saved many memos from you all since June 1998 about Joseph
Carter b about 1755, the object of your research. I saved the synopsis
huge memos from warpaint(a)texoma.net
(Lyndon Nix) carefully going thorough a 200 page letter from a Mrs.
Ledgerwood
at an AK add regarding this (Southampton Tp?),Bucks Co, PA Carters of
the
1600s: She wrote the genealogy book about this line. James Carter and
wife
Alice Unknown. This is also my line. I will be glad to fill in details
upon
request.
A. James and Alice Carter were Quakers, lived in Southampton Township ,
Bucks Co, PA and d 1710 near Winchester, Frederick Co, VA, on the 1st
highway west. Assume a 3rd son, Benjamin, b 1710 d 1748 ch Thomas/John.
B. Richard b 1726 migrated to Frederick Co and bro James II migrated to
Joppa, MD area and m Hannah Chenoweth.
Richard m Margaret Bruce 1746 in MD. Had five sons.
Ch: George Carter
James Carter
John Carter
Robert Carter
Joseph Carter (The object of research.)
C. In 1766-1768 Richard and Margaret Carter won land grants totaling
500
acres, they moved to Canes Creek area, 96th Dist/Laurens Co, South
Carolina.
It appears all the family migrated including Uncle Benjamin's two oldest
ch,
Thomas and John. All sons and nephews owned land parcels of this grant
at
one time or another which is documented. Please note in your files
that after
the Rev War ended, Joseph, and many other Carters moved to East
Florida(St.
Augustine, St John's Co. That area became a state and they migrated
again to
Rawdon, Hants Co., Nova Scotia where they are buried. This would make
it
difficult to find for you all. Here is the Joseph Carter article:
D. Lyndon Nix quotes Mrs. Ledgerwood. The letter was directly
quoted as the following: "
"Joseph Carter(3) Richard(2) James(1)
Joseph Carter was one of the sons of Richard and Margaret (Bruce)
Carter. We extimate he was born about 1740 in Frederick Co, VA.
When the family of Richard moved to SC about 1766, Joseph
probably came, also. He may have been married before coming to SC.
Joseph certainly was in SC by early 1771, for a tract of 200 acres of
land was surveyed for Joseph on Cane creek, in what was then Berkeley
Co(now Laurens Co), SC. The Warrant date was 5 February 1771. A plat
for this
land was certified by Patrick Cunningham, District Surveyor, on the 8
March
1771. The land was bounded on all sides by vacant land.(29) The fact
that the
grant was for 200 acres indicates Joseph was married and had at least
one
child
On 5 August 1777, Richard and Margaret divided their lands in what
was then Berkeley Co among their sons. Joseph Carter received 125
acres.(30)
The deed was witnessed by George, James and Robert Carter. This land
was
part of a 300 ac original grant to Richard Carter by Gov Montague in
1773.(31)
Two of Joseph's brothers also received portions of this 300 ac plot of
land:
George Carter rec 100 ac, and Robert Carter rec 75 ac.
One Joseph Carter was listed in Jury List of 1779 in the area of Little
River between Broad and Saluda Rivers. These Jury Lists were evidently
copied from tax lists. Names were probably grouped with others who
lived
nearby.(32) Some names near Joseph included Nathaniel Nichels, Anthony
Golding, Joseph Johnston, James Waldrope, Thomas Gill, John Hunter,
Abraham Hollingsworth, Benjamin Collier, Daniel Pitts.
During the Rev War, Joseph Carter sided with the Loyalists(or
British), as did many of his neighbors. One Joseph Carter's name
appears on
a Muster Roll of Lt Colonel Evan McLauren's Co of SC Royalists in
Savannah,
GA on 1 Dec 1779.(33) Some of the other names on this same muster roll
are
much like some other Laurens Co names, making it appear that this may
have
been "our" Joseph.
When a neighbor, Patrick Cunningham, raised a group of men to form
the Little River militia of Ninety Six Brigade, Joseph Carter and others
of his
neighborhood were in the group. Joseph was listed as a private on a Pay
Abstract of Major Patrick Cunningham's Regiment for a period of 183 days
pay
from 14 June to 13 Dec 1780.(34) According to a note with the Pay
Abstract,
these men did not serve under Maj Ferguson.
Colonel Thomas Pearson took over the command of the Little River
Militia and a similar Pay Abstract was drawn for 90 days pay from 7 Dec
1781
to 6 March 1782. These soldiers were posted on James Island in SC.
Joseph
Carter was a Private, and other Carters(also privates) were James,
Isaac, John,
Elisha and Thomas.(35) Joseph Carter was also listed among the soldiers
in
Col Pearson's Regiment, on Pay Abstract Number 167, paid for 61 days
service
from 6 August through 6 October 1882. Other Carters were Sergeant
Thomas
Carter, Elisha, Isaac, John and James.(37)
After the Rev War, Joseph and some other Carters were in the area
of St Augustine, East Florida, in 1784. On 22 and 23 April 1784, Joseph
of East
Florida made a deed to his nephew, John Carter(son of George and Naomi
Turk
Carter), selling his lands on Cane Creek in SC. This included the 125
ac in
what was the Berkeley Co part of the 125 ac granted to Richard Carter,
which
was conveyed to Joseph in 1777.(38) Witnesses to this deed were
Nicholas
Welsh and Richard King. George Fardo was the Justice of Peace in East
Florida. Thomas Carter was also present, according tohis sworn
statement in
Laurens Co on 9 January 1789.
On the same date, in a separate deed, Joseph Carter of East Florida
conveyed the 200 ac in Berkeley Co, which he had rec as an Original
Grant in
1771, to his nephew, John Carter of East Florida. This deed had the
same
witnesses, and Justice of the Peace.(39) John Carter registered both of
these
deeds in Laurens Co on 28 Sep 1790.
Those Loyalists who went to East Florida during and shortly after
the Rev War, were ready to settle there permanently. To their surprise
and
chagrin, England ceded Florida to the Spanish by provisions of the
Treaty of
Paris, which ended the Rev War. There was a period of great turmoil and
unrest, as there were thousands of Loyalists and their families in East
Florida.
Some few chose to swear allegiance to the Spanish and adopt the Catholic
religion; they were allowed to remain in Florida. Those who did not
wish to
remain under Spanish domination were shipped out by the British to the
Bahama Islands and to other British-held areas. The British were given
eighteen months to clear out the Loyalist refugees and their families.
about ten
thousand persons were added to the over-crowded conditions in St.
Augustine
from Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC. There was not enough housing, and
food was scarce. Eventually about 17 or 18 thousand persons passed
through
the St Augustine evacuation center before they were shipped to other
places.
On 29 July 1784, a large group saled from St Augustine to Nova
Scotia on board the Argo. Several Carters were listed among the Argo
refugees. The included 'Susan, Josh, Elizabeth, Tempeson and Rosannah
Carter'(40) This group of 260 refugee men, women and children arrived
at the
Strait of Canso, Guysborough County, just as autumn was beginning.(41)
One
wonders how many survived the hardships of that first winter.
A list of settlers from St Augustine to Guysborough Co, Nova Scotia,
includes Joseph Carter, who received a grant of 400 acres.(42)
According to
the GUYSBOROUGH SKETCHES, Joseph Carter's wife was named Rhoda or
Rasamond.(43) There were ten children in his family:(44)
1. Richard Carter, b 1771, d on 20 Jan 1848 age 77. His wife was
named Bridget. Five children were listed.
2. Susanna Carter b 18 Dec 1778, m David Martin.
3. Joseph Carter m Esther ???. Two sons were Richard and Robert.
4. George Bruce Carter, b 9 October 1786, m Sarah ???. The had
19 children, three of who were drowned in "the August Gale".
Among their ch were the names Robert, John, Naomi, Zimri(all typical
names in
the Richard Carter descendants in SC.)
5. Sarah Carter b 22 October 1789
6. Lydia Carter, b 30 Apr 1792, married James Lyle.
7. Temperance Carter m James Reeves.
8. John Carter married Elizabeth Snow on 13 January 1822. They
had three ch. He m (2) Mary Ann ??? and had five more ch.
9. Robert Carter m Mary ???. They had eight children.
10. Elizabeth Carter.
The list of Carters included on the Argo resembles some of the names
above: Susannah, Joseph had a daughter, Susanna, b 1778; Josh-could be
Joseph; Elizabeth-Joseph had a dau by that name, but no dates or other
info.
Tempeson-this name strongly resembles Temperance; Rosannah-resembles
the name of Joseph's wife."
I hope this direct quote gives you many leads to verify in order to get
the complete story of what sounds like a story of great courage and
hope.
Sincerely,
Sharon Carter Lengfellner
