Jack and any other Carter researchers,
My Carter research begins with Littleton Carter, b. 1805 SC.? of
Randolph, and Terrell Co; Ga. A distant, elderly (and sometimes weird)
relative recently ask when I was going to get into our indian heritage.
At first I thought perhaps she was confused, but later remembered my
mother saying something about our family not have much body hair because
of indian blood. This maybe all a myth, I really don't know!
I have been reading about the different rolls for the Eastern tribes,
and plan to order some through my local LDS family research center, but
what other avenues might I pursue? I really have no idea where to begin.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Born December 24, 1912 died April 17, 2000. Preceeded in death by her husband
of 64 years Homer; son James and grandsons chuck and Christopher. Beloved
mother of Virginia (George), Audrey (Bill) and Pam. Mother in law of Ray
Howland and Sandy Carter.Grandmother of 14 and great grandmother of 14.
Burial at Ashley Gardens in Everett, WA.
I have started a search for my great grand father Barnett Carter. he was a Capt. in the civil war. Co D, 34 Battalion Virginia Cavalry. I am told he came to WV from Va. where he married MalhuldaMullins They had abt 14 children. I know nothing else of him. his year of birth was abt. 1818. he must have been living in WV in 1860 . What type of education who he have had to had to be a Capt. during this time?. I hope some one my know the missing link. His first son was names Thomas. Would that be a clue his father name?

I want to clarify an earlier posting I made to the list. I mentioned the
fact that LDS information states that Thomas Carter (said to have been
b.1725) married Rachel Pike, in 1750. Furthermore that Rachel Pike was
supposedly born in 1736.
I've had a plethora of responses in which respondents state marriages of 14
year old girls was not uncommon. I am well aware that females 14 years old
and even younger have married. I would question whether it was as common as
some respondents would seem to indicate.
I would refer interested parties to examine the January, 2000 issue of THE
AMERICAN GENEALOGIST, where it discusses this very issue. Just because it
was possible for a girl to have married at the age of 14 or for a woman to
have had a child at the age of 45 or 50, doesn't mean that it is necessarily
so. When such extreme ages are indicated, it is recommended that one look
even more diligently to confirm that the extreme age is correct and verified
by records.
In the case of Thomas Carter and Rachel Pike, the LDS information also
provides a gap of seven years between the marriage date of the couple and the
birth of their first child. Also, Thomas Carter is described in one source
as a younger son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Pannill) Carter. Yet, his
birthdate of 1725, given in the LDS information, would make him an older
child, if not the eldest. The estate administration of Daniel Carter (d.1759
in Lancaster Co., VA) also places Thomas Carter among the younger children.
So, in other words, this all raises questions regarding the reliability of
the LDS information and the need for the contributors of the information to
provide the documentation on which they base their information.

Paul Carter, who many of you know as one of the prominent Carter
researchers of the past, has apparently put together a Carter CD, which
includes a number of Carter genealogy books, carter indexes, and other
carter resources.
This is not an endorsement of the CD, but as many of you know of him (he
has greatly assisted me in the past), thought you might at least like to
look at the contents of the CD on his site, and some of the Carter
indexes at his site.
The site is http://members.aol.com
One of the things I found interesting is that part of the CD is the
Carter Cherokee, which is a list of all the Carters on the Cherokee
Rolls. 13 Carters were on the Trail of Tears, per the CD - I am going to
try to find out which ones, and I'll post the names if I can find them.

Daniel Carter (b.ca 1700; d. 1759) was a resident of Lancaster Co., VA and
was a son of Thomas and Arabella Carter and a grandson of Thomas and
Katherine (Dale) Carter. Among the children of Daniel Carter was a son,
Thomas, who is mentioned in his estate administration.
LDS sources state that the abovementioned Thomas Carter, son of Daniel
(d.1759) was born 4 Jun 1725 and married, 22 Aug 1750, Rachel Pike, who if we
are to believe this source, was only 14 years old. I remain highly
doubtful of this information and would like to correspond with anyone who
knows the source of these dates.

Hello List (copy to Carters, North),
Two months ago a man in Florida e-mailed me to say he had purchased a photo
album at an antique fair, and he thought it could be my family. I have
registered my ancestors names around the place, and it became clear that he
indeed appeared to really have the goods.
He wanted to sell it to me for $450 dollars, a price he said was fair as
there were quite a few tin types in it. I talked my sister in New York
into taking a giant leap of faith and use her money (!) to purchase the
album. She sent the cheque off and we waited and waited, and just when we
were beginning to feel a bit foolish it arrived.
The album is definitely worth the money, even if it didn't have my family
in it which it does. There are about 15 or 20 photos of my ancestors and
the rest are of unidentified people.
The pictures are amazing, there are quite a few taken by photographers in
Wolverhampton, Dudley and Birmingham, England and the rest are in Ohio,
Penslyvania and Florida which is where they ended up. The Ohio and
Penslyvania pictures are from Warren, Niles, Youngstown and the Penslyvania
pictures are from Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, Washington, Philidelphia. Some
of the family names are: HACKETT, WHITEHOUSE, WILLICK, ROOF, CLARK, TROW,
JONES, WILLS, HICKEY, PROSER, TIBBALS, TATE, COFFERY, STEWART, BRETTELL
with the main name of CARTER.
The CARTER names in it are: BLANCHE HACKETT CARTER, NETTIE CARTER, ROY
CARTER, BESS CARTER, TRUTH CARTER, THOMAS CARTER, JOHN CARTER, KIT CARTER.
There are quite a few pictures without names so I am endeavouring to get
them scanned and put them on a homepage.
Cheers,
Michelle
I am sending the posting's out to everyone that is related to the Carter's
for this family Reunion. And one list owner refuse's for me to post this on
his board. I think this called Censorship. And It is completely wrong. I cant
make any posting without if going through him ...
I just wanted to know what everyone thought about this.
I tried to explain the relationship between the Carter's and that board but
he wont listen.
Email me privately. And I will send the copies of those emails to you. If you
would like to see them.
