Hi Joyce,
I continue to work with other Carters all the time and had a thought
about Amanda. My Patriarch in Bluford cem: Joel A Carter had a younger
brother, Richard P Carter(Jr?) b 1821 d 1849 after "brain fevor" or
menangitis. He left his wife, Sally Phillips Carter, and a son and dau
and the Phillips family helped raise these offspring. Perhaps Amanda,
Orb, Wm are ch of that son. The ages are perfect.
Our "Joel Line" have been fortunate to receive all the fill in
information records from this "Richard P Line". This could have been
Phillips family way of keeping up the memory or something. I am sure
Ava(my contact) would love hearing from you. Will keep looking and will
send updates if you want.

Brother Will - haven't found any info on because the Will
that I did find

he was the only

need to identify the parents of Jerusha Carter and information on James's
family to see if there is a connection to Jerusha (Carter) Heald.

Katherine,
I can sympathize with Carter frustration. If your Carters did go to
Europe on their honeymoon, probably they would have gotten passports.
According to "Genealogical Research in the National Archives," passports
were not required for US citizens traveling abroad before WWI, but
November 1919 would have been after that. The National Archives has
passport applications 1791-1925. It says the applications usually include
name, signature, place of residence, age, who was traveling, date, and
SOMETIMES exact date and place of birth of the applicant. There is a card
index finding aid for these applications, which has been microfilmed.
Good luck--lte's hope they did go to Europe!

Hi Carter cousins.
I am hoping that someone has a loose end that needs tiying up and that this
information will strike a chord.
I am looking for my long lost g-g-grandmother L.L. Carter. We have family
information that says her name was Lucy, but her signiture on her son's
marriage permission is L.L.Carter. So it could be Lucy or Lucinda.
Here is what we know for sure:
She was alive on 12/ 16/ 1884 because she signed permission for her son R.M.
Carter to marry Callie Ishee in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. We have her
death listed as 11/19/1885, but Idon't know where that info came from. We
have been told that she never married and that R.m. (Roy, Rorie?) was her
only child. It has been said that her possible sister (Roxie) possibly
married a Dollar Clearmon, Claremon? Of course that is just a family astory
right now, that the Clearmons, who were relatedto her, helped her raise her
son. So who knows on that.
Thanks,
John

Dear Janny,
If you want to hear a tale of Carter frustration, I can match you one
and raise you!
My maternal grandfather, BENTLEY FREDERICK CARTER, died when my mother
was only 6--and her mother died when she was 12. Consequently, we
know almost nothing about old Bentley Frederick--who went by the
initials B.F. We believe he was born around 1870, possibly in Jesup,
GA. He lists his age on my mother's birth certificate (in 1925) as
53; but he's only 54 on her brother's birth cert in 1929, 4 years
later. (We know he was considerably older than my grandmother, who
was born in 1895, so it isn't surprising that he would have fudged the
figures on his age. Hence, the supposition of an actual birth date of
abt 1870, possibly as early as 1865.)
We know that BF had a (younger?) brother with whom he was in business,
allegedly with offices in Atlanta and NYC, apparently in
stock-brokering. We also know that he had been married before, and
had at least one child (son?) by that marriage. His death date is
abt. Dec. 31, 1931, but we aren't sure where he died. We *believe* it
was in Atlanta, and that he was buried there, but we've been unable to
trace any evidence of that, or to discover an obit.
The only thing I've found that *might* be him is a photocopy of an
index card record from Emory University, stating that a Ben F. Carter
graduated in 1879 with a BA. (They were very helpful, but that's all
the record they have, for something that far in the past.)
We also know he was a Mason, and I'm trying to pursue that line of
research. The two photos we have of him, much younger than he would
have been married to my grandmother, show him wearing a distinctive
lapel pin that I've distributed to several of my Masonic friends, in
hopes that they can identify it and give me a lead.
This man has to have left some trail! And the name is distinctive
enough that it would sure stand out, if I knew where else to look.
I'll be in Atlanta in late June on business, and would love to be able
to do some family sleuthing while I'm there.
Anybody have any suggestions? I'm new at this, and have no idea where
to go next.

P.S. He isn't in the 1920 Census for Georgia or New York--though it's
possible he was out of the country at that time. He and my
grandmother were married Nov. 29, 1919, and might well have gone to
Europe on their honeymoon.
