Kevin,
Does this mean CARTER'S ORPHANS was a road and Josiah was the guardian of
it? That's a twist!

Am looking for information on a Silas W. Carter maried
to Mary Francis Smith. Moved to Shelby County, TX
fron Evergreen, AL in 1904.
Children were Nettie, Edgar, Nell, Smith Lee, Mary
Leigh, Lyda, Ola, Ida, Wylma and one that died in
infancy.
Mary Francis Smith had a sister Martha Jane Smith who
also married a carter, James Monroe Carter, but I do
not know if the two men were brothers.
Parents of Mary Francis and Martha Jane were Steve and
Elizabeth Smith.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

It has been some time since I have posted a query on my Vincent. There has
still been no progress on his lineage. There have been some clues though.
I would be eager to hear from anyone who may have run across him before Giles
Co. TN census for 1830-1850.
Vincent Carter b. Feb. 22 1803 NC (possibly Halifax Co. NC) d. Oct 1873
Johnson Co. IL married (1st) Sarah Patterson (possibly of AL), resided in
Smith Co. TN he had three children from that union: William, Neil, and
Dorcas. He married 1829 (2nd) Elizabeth Rose {dau. of Francis and Elizabeth
(Cutbirth) Rose}. They had 12 children: James, John, Francis M., Mary, Lucy,
Elizabeth, Tennessee, Sabra, Lucy, Virginia, Rebecca, and Martha. They are
found on the TN census for 1830 - 1850.
Clues as to Vincent's lineage are that he was possibly born in Halifax Co.
NC. He arrived in Smith Co. TN with his parents in 1806. Possible parents
include a listed Vincent, William or James in Smith Co. TN. A family memeber
claims that he remembers reading a document that was framed in another family
members home that was a letter of introduction to the frontier for a James
Carter dated in the 1700's. The letter was stolen during a burgulary along
with another letter written to a family member from Abe Lincoln (both were
hanging on a wall).
I would be grateful for any help.
Thanks Mara
I just received the death certificate of Thomas Carter, who died on November
10, 1928, in Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio; and was born on May 4,
1860, in Hardin County. It says that his parents were William Carter (born
in Virginia) and Elizabeth Collins (born in Hardin County). The informant
was a relative, J. C. Carter. He was buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery on
November 12, 1928.
If you are a relative or are researching this family or line, please e-mail
me and I will happily mail you the death certificate.

Those of you on multiple lists -- sorry you are getting this more than once,
but I wanted to notify all the lists I was on ---
In todays Des Moines Register was the following article:
Birth certificate bill is scraped
A legislative panel scrapped a proposal that would have made it more
difficult to gain access to birth certificates and other records.
The House Human Resources Committee rejected the proposal to tighten the
access, which was made to help prevent identity theft.
"There was a public uproar over it," said Rep. Gary Blodgett, a Clear
Lake Republican.
Genealogists opposed the bill because it would have made the researching
family histories more difficult. A Senate committee rejected a similar
proposal earlier in the week.
SO -- WAY TO GO -- IOWA IS KEEPING THE RECORD SEARCH AS IS FOR NOW. THANKS
TO ALL WHO WROTE REQUESTING THAT THEY NOT CLOSE THE RECORDS, OR MAKE THEM
HARDER TO RESEARCH.

Lynn,
I have a 1796 Bedford Co VA record mentioning "Carter Orphans". I have not
been able to identify who their parents were. I am researching a John Carter
who died 1798-99 in Bedford Co VA owning about 250 acres on the Stanton River
in Bedford Co. I believe John had a son named David Carter, who married
Anne Derefield in Bedford Co in 1800. I believe David and Anne to be the
parents of my known ancestor Thomas Carter, born about 1803, probably in
Russell Co VA, and moved to Lawrence Co KY with his brother John by 1829,
where they both later died. John Carter who died 1798-99 clearly is not the
father of these 1796 orphans but I do suspect a relationship. Could be the
same orphans as mentioned in your note. I have no info on the other Carter
men you named.
The record below is from Bedford Co VA Order Book 11, page 135 (microfilm
reel # 42 at Library of Virginia in Richmond.) I found it while at the NGS
conference last year.

Does anyone have information on Captain George CARTER of the Pittsylvania,

Someone has got to have some information on my great-grandfather and
great-grandmother. They were married in Chatham County (I'm from Savannah
too) on September 5, 1875. My sister tells me they are buried at a Brickyard
Cemetary near Hwy. 204 and I-95 in Liberty County (Hinesville, Gum Branch,
etc). I've not been there, so I can't verify it.
What's so puzzling is that I've got some information on my grandfather Robert
Franklin Carter, Sr., and his wife Lula Elizabeth WELLS, and even back
through the WELLS and GROOVER lines to Peter GRUBER of Ebenezer, but "zip" on
Robert and Josephine. Robert must have adopted this name to avoid legal
troubles or to get away from his first, second, third, etc., wife.
My family lines have the following Surnames in the Liberty, Bulloch, and
Chatham county areas: CARTER, WELLS, GROOVER, LIGHTSEY, POPPELL, MOBLEY,
STEWART (from PA), MCINTIRE, and KEATON. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the tip. I have thought about those two counties and have looked
briefly into Russell Co. because I know that a number of the Carter families
settled in that area. I suspect that Thornton must have passed through that
direction because my information is that he arrived in TN from the Clinch
River Valley area, but I haven't been able to find him in Russell Co.
Thornton's son was named Josiah Pennell Carter and I read the book Josiah
Carter and his Descendants but with no luck. What intrigued me about this
lineage (from Capt. Thomas Carter) is that they were also in Pittsylvania
County and there was a wife whose name was Panele Carroll....With the Josiah
and the Panele going on there, it seemed to be a connection, but I couldn't
make it. I even wrote the researcher, but he doesn't know my Thornton.
There were also a number of (surname) Thorntons living in Pittsylvania Co. at
the same time and I have tried to find who they married, etc., but nothing.
I have bumped into the names Presley and Joseph before, too, but haven't yet
been able to link them to Thornton. My very first concrete lead was the
reference to Henrietta and Presley in the marriage ceremony, but again, I
don't know the relationship. Thornton doesn't appear on anyone's list of
siblings or children. I know everything about him moving forward in time,
but I just can't seem to find his Carter branch no matter where I look.
Thanks for trying to point me in the right direction. Carolyn

I really need the help of all you Carter experts out there. I recently found
a record in the marriage records of Pittsylvania Co, VA that Thornton Carter
witnessed the marriage of Henrietta Carter to Hezekiah Smithson on August 22,
1810. Presley Carter is listed as "parent." I have been searching for the
origins of THORNTON CARTER for, well -- don't ask.......Anyway, there are a
couple of possibilities here. Presley Carter could be the father of
Henrietta only and Thornton could be Presley's brother. Or, Presley could be
the father of both Henrietta AND Thornton and Thornton is Henrietta's
brother. Thornton was born in 1778, eventually went to Wake Co, NC and then
to Claiborne County, TN. This is the first time I have seen Thornton's name
directly linked to other Carters in Pittsylvania County, VA, so if any of you
associated with Presley can connect us, please let me know. Thanks!! You
guys are great and I'm hoping this will finally work. Carolyn

Hello All,
I am a new subscriber, and am attempting to trace back from my paternal
gggGrandmother, Sarah Carter who was born March of 1830 in Georgia and after
the death of her husband in 1878 near Dallas, Paulding, GA, migrated with
some of her children to AL and ultimately to Waxahachie, TX where she died
Sept. 6, 1904 of senility (according to the death record at the County
Courthouse.
The only other info I have is the following:
Sarah is the only known child of James and Lucinda (Maiden name unknown)
Carter. James was born 1805 in VA and Lucinda was born 1815 (location
unknown). We do not know death dates/locations on either of her parents.
James is the son of Robert and Sarah (Maiden name unknown) Carter.
Robert was born 1781 (location unknown) and Sarah was born 1783 (location
unknown). Death dates/locations for these two also not known at this time.
Nothing is presently known of the parents of either Lucinda nor of James'
Mother, Sarah. James' daughter, Sarah, married John D. Mitchell (b. 1833 in
Bedford, TN) on July 30, 1846 in Paulding County, Georgia.
Can anyone shed any light on Sarah, primarily whether or not she had any
siblings, anything on her maternal lineage, if her parents/grandparents had
any siblings and last but not least, any info further back in time on her
ancestors.
