Just a quick note to wish everyone I very happy holiday season! Through all
of these gracious lists I have learned not only about my ancestors, but I
have received the best gift of all, FAMILY!! And I'm not just talking about
new relatives that I have found, but all of you! Everyone is so patient,
caring, and willing to jump in and help at a moments notice. That's what
family is supposed to be about. All of you have truly become my family!
Love and best wishes to all,
Kymm in Huntsville, AL
Looking for any information that might be had on a Nick Carter. He was a blacksmith in Arlington, Tx for a time. He had a son named Howard Carter who was born in 1901 in Bizbee, AZ. Nick married a woman by the name of Alma (not sure of last name). There is rumor that this line comes from one of the daughters of Chief Cochise. But like I said it is a rumor. Any information that might be floating around would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Merry Christmas
Steve Baird
And not getting off to a very good start. Accidently
added "subscribe" E-mail to my address list. Oops!
My most frustrating brick walls are my great
grandparents, John and Frances Carter.
According to an 1880 census for Newton Co., Mo, John
was born about 1841 in IL. Frances was born about the
same time in VA. Children were Elizabeth, Emma,
"Carrie", George and David.
Carrie was my grandmother, Bertha Caroline Carter,
born in 1872 (somewhere) in Illinois.
Another daughter, Ida Mae Carter, was born in Newton
Co., MO in 1881.
According to my mother, the family moved to Texas.
Carrie and my grandfather, John Koontz were married in
1982. They lived in Hutchinson KS until they moved to
Lamar, Colorado in 1910.
Ida Mae married Frank Sutton and lived in Hutchinson
until her death in 1959.
George or David must have moved to Denver. Mom had an
"Aunt Lulu" in Denver and a cousin named Earl Carter,
who worked for the railroad.
I hope that these Carters are familiar to somebody!
I have a suspected connection to a family in Jasper
County, Illinois, but absolutely no proof.
Thanks,
Nancy Bower

I to am fairly new to list also but I have received wonderful information and am
hoping for more. George Atwood my first cousin twice removed ( I think :) )
sent me some info that came from my own "back yard" that was an article on my
great grand father the Rev. Elijah M. Carter and his wife Lucretia Atwood (
George's great aunt).
So this list and every other list except one has been virtually little "casks of
treasure" for me.

Hello,
I am new to the Carter -L site. Carter is a surname I have little to start
with. I have been doing family history research for some years now. It has
been nice to watch the roots-L surname list go from not having all the
alphabet represented to becoming as complete as it has.
There have been times when I too have had only a small fragment of
information to post. Posting it just the same. Crossing my fingers someone
may have something more for me to go on. I read a posting similar this week.
I hope some of the responses to that posting is not a true representation of
the personality of the Carter list. Good luck new Carter-L researcher.

Joseph Carter of Rhy Cove, VA, I think that is now in Scott Co, had several
children. One daughter, Anne, is reported to have married a James Gibson. Has
anyone got information on this Anne Carter and her marriage. Joseph Carter
had several slaves and did not want them to go to children that would not
keep them in slavery. I think Anne may have been one of those children, for
she moved to Arkansas with her sons and daughter's family after 1815, and
from what I know they did not keep slaves, either in VA or in Arkansas.
Joseph Carter died in 1810, and Anne after 1830 in Arkansas. Has anyone
information on Anne Carter's marriage. Thanks Frank

Hi Carter researchers!
Do these belong to any of you on this list???
This info is from a public library book that some one has stumbled across and
much of the info that she has shared at request of others on the Izard Co.,
AR list is info that many didn't have.
I do not have the title of the book in front of me, but I will get back to
you with that if these Carters belong to any of you! I know how hard they are
to find sometimes!!!
If I don't talk with you again before Christmas, please have a blessed
holiday with your families!

Happy Holidays,
Hello everyone. I am a new subscriber to the Carter surname list. Carter
is a new surname for me to research. I found a Daniel CARTER b.2-10-1868 d.
9-20-1938. I don't know where he was born. I think he died in Dillon. SC.
Daniel was married to a Telatha. I know nothing of who Daniel descended from,
where he was from, who his siblings were, what he, or they did. In essence I
have nothing more than a name and dates. I hope this is enough information
for someone to know who this Daniel is.
Seasons Greetings,
Cindy
Hey there folks,
David I have already met you last year but the others I haven't had the
pleasure of meeting yet.
Folks I have been digging for the past year in and off the internet. I
was contacted last month by a wonderful man by the name of George Atwood
in Idaho. George is a descendent of Lucretia's parents and is virtual
"cask of genealogy wealth". He sent me the following copy of an
article written in 1985 and it came from my OWN BACK YARD! Goes to show
that you can just dig and dig and rake right past some good info if we
are not careful. Any way here is what he shared with me and I will
share with you.
Susie McFarland Lemin........ David and I share the same great
grandparents. Rosella Carter and Jerome Lee Snodgrass.. David take note
of Rosella's name.. no wonder people were arguing about it. smile

The Life and Family
of
REVEREND ELIJAH MILBURN CARTER
Elijah Milburn Carter was born on February 28, 1823 in Dallas County
Alabama. It is believed that he was the son of Thomas (b. ca 1785 in
North Carolina) and Elizabeth Moseley (b. ca 1878 South Carolina)
Carter.
Little is known about Elijah's early life, other than the
information in his obituary. According to the obituary, Elijah was
baptized into the Baptist Church at "Salem", Alabama, at the age of 13.
(Probably Selma, which is in Dallas County) The family then moved to
Lauderdale County, Mississippi, where Elijah remained until his
marriage. In Lauderdale County, Elijah joined the Baptist Church at
Alamucha, Mississippi.
Elijah Milburn Carter married Lucretia Ellen Atwood on March 1, 1842
in Clarke County, Mississippi. (At the time of this writing, the actual
record of this marriage had not been found). Elijah and Lucretia lived
in Clarke County near both of their families until early in 1851.
Three if there children we born there. ( Mary Elizabeth on November 4,
1843; Thomas Abraham on September 5, 1846: William James on January 13,
1849).
The small family, along with several relatives, moved west in the
early months of 1851. They first stopped in Grand Bluff, Panola County,
Texas and moved to Smith County, Texas in October. Elijah remained
there the rest of his life. The 1852 tax rolls for Smith County, Texas
showed that Elijah owned 320 acres on Mud Creek, valued at 540 dollars.
The last six children of Elijah and Lucretia was born in Smith
County, in the Flint and Bullard area. Sarah "Kansas Toledo Territory"
Canzada* was born on December 10, 1851. Elijah Armel wa born May 2,
1854. Nancy Jane "Nannie" was born August 29, 1855. Milburn Elisha was
born April 22, 1858. Margaret Isella Rosella Isabella Amandie
Loraninie** was born January 22, 1861. Francis Christopher Columbus
"Frank" was born March 11, 1864 in Flint, Texas.
Elijah Milburn Carter was ordained as a Baptist Minister on November
1, 1862 at Mt. Zion Church in smith County by Presbyters J. r. Clark and
G. B. Featherston. According to Elijah's obituary, he served in about
30 churches in Smith County area during his ministry -- some of them
eight to twelve years. elijah was a member of the Cherokee Baptist
Association and "....never failed to meet with it save one time when
sick, except when home stricken unto death."
Elijah was the pastor of the New Hope Church of Christ, Baptist in
Whitehouse, Texas , from October 1874 until september 1881. Elijah is
mentioned in many of the surviving minutes of the Church. In march
1881, the Church reprimanded a member for having a part(y): she
repented, and the minutes recorded that Brother Carter resolved
"....that she was (not) to have another party if she could avoid it."
Elijah was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and received a demit dated
February 4, A. L. 1885 from Lodge No. 184 at Etna, which is now called
Bullard. It stated that Elijah was a Master Mason, in good standing, of
the Hickory Grove Lodge, and it recommended him to the "....fraternal
regard of all regular Lodges and Brethren."
Elijah's obituary gives a great insight into his personality and
lifestyle. It reads, " Bro. Carter was ever ready to engage in the
service of this master, he endured much for the cause of Christ, he was
divested of a man fearing or any man pleasing spirit and never failed to
declare the whole council of God as he understood it claiming that it
was better to please God than man, he was a strict disciplinarian.... he
was ever ready to give council to both old and young, he was firm in the
doctrine of Salvation by Grace to the redeemed of God, he claimed that
he was a sinner saved by grace, he believed in those old Songs, such as
Amazing Grace How Sweet the Sound, Grace, 'Tis a Charming Sound, and
that old hymn How Firm A Foundation Ye Saints of the Lord... he was a
great lover of Sacred music vocal and engaged in teaching for many
years, but he gave up all for work of the ministry, which was his whole
theme." Relatives say that elijah and Lucretia had the first in the
area with glass windows, which they had shipped in. They also had a
portrait made of themselves, which in the possession of their grand
daughter, Willie Kansas Carter Willis, in flint, Texas.. The portrait
reveals the stern, yet loving, faces that had become so respected in the
area in which they had settled.
On October 25 and 26, 1895, the household effects of Elijah and
Lucretia were appraised and sold the their several children. The total
amount of the items sold was 83. 25 dollars. This was four months
before Elijah's death, though he was declared "fully capassitated to
attend to the business in hand both in mind and boddy."
Elijah Milburn Carter died on February 9, 1896 at his home. He was
73 years old, had been married almost 54 years, and had been a Baptist
minister for almost 34 years. Elijah had fathered nine children, who
gave him over 50 grandchildren. He was buried in the Old Barron
Cemetery next to his son William James Carter. The cemetery is next to
the New Bethel Cemetery (black) and is no longer used. It has been
badly vandalized, and it is located just south of the Tyler city limits
on the Jacksonville Highway.
Elijah's death was summed up best in his obituary, which read, "...
God in his alwise providence has visited us with the head of death and
torn from us one our members (to wit) Br. E. M. Carter, who departed
this life at his residence the 9th day of last February, with nervous
prostration; he was confined about eight months, during which time he
suffered much (mentally).. alas he is gone, he is no more with us but
while he is gone his light still shines as though he yet lives. He
leaves an aged companion and an innumerable host of relatives and
friends to morn his departure but while we morn it is not as for those
who have no hope, just a few day before his death he gave renewed
evidence that he was going home to heaven and we are thus enabled to
cherish the fond hope that he in at rest with his blast redeemer in that
sweet paradise of God enjoying the fruition of that world that is
unknown to us and while we sing here, Bro. Carter will sing redeeming
grace in the bright world of bliss though out the ceaseless ages of a
never ending eternity."
Many of the descendent of Elijah and Lucretia Atwood Carter still live
in the Flint area, and countless others are spread across the United
States. These descendents come together each year on the fourth Sunday
in August at the Flint/Gresham Community Center to enjoy family
fellowship and remember that determined and courageous couple who were
among those brave pioneers who settled in a new and untamed state.
The following was added by George I think.. I am not sure but it is
typed on the same sheet of paper.
Lucretia Ellen Atwood
Lucretia Ellen Atwood was born on November 20, 1823 in Mississippi.
(Probably Pike county because her parents lived there in 1820)
Lucretia's parents were Abraham and Mary Goldman Atwood. Abraham was
born circa 1789 in Georgia, and Mary was born 1795 in South Carolina.
By 1830, Abraham and his family had moved to Copiah County,
Mississippi, and by 1840, they were in Clarke County, Mississippi, where
they remained until they moved to Texas in 1851
Lucretia had many brothers and sisters. Her sisters included"
Salina Smith, Isella Cosby, Casada, and Nancy J. Carroll. Lucretia's
brothers included: Thomas, Mulberry and Isaac.
Lucretia married Elijah Milburn Carter in Clarke County,
Mississippi, on March 1, 1842. They had nine children, eight of whom
lived to have children of their own. After Elijah's death in 1896,
Lucretia lived with her youngest son, Francis Christopher Columbus
Carter.
In the 1900 census of Smith County, Texas, Lucretia was 76, and he
occupation wa given as nurse. this may have meant that she was a
midwife in her community, though it is not know for sure.
Lucretia Atwood Carter died in Flint, Texas on Jan 22, 1908. Her
death certificate listed the cause of death as Senility and Old Age;
she was 84 years old. She was buried next to her husband, Elijah, at
the Old Barron Cemetery between Tyler and Flint, Texas.
* does anyone know why she was nicknamed this?
** what a load of names to tag onto a child. There has been debates as
to what her name was, now we find out everyone was right! LOL
Merry Christmas to all my family, old and new. May the New Year bring
us closer and many more relatives to share our world with.
