ROCKEFELLER LIBRARY UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE
The John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library has unveiled a greatly expanded section
on the Colonial Williamsburg website (http://www.history.org), offering
individuals interested in the Colonial Chesapeake the opportunity to search
the library's vast collections. New features include PATRIOT, the
Rockefeller Library's online catalog listing the 68,000 titles in the
Library, and guides to manuscript, microfilm, selected photograph and other
research collections, such as the Shirley Plantation Collection of over
18,000 manuscript items. Previously, individuals had to physically visit
the library or be connected to an internal network to access these
resources.
"We have electronically opened the doors to our major collections by adding
finding aids and the Library catalog to the World Wide Web," says Public
Services Librarian Juleigh Clark. "Now, when researchers come to the
Library, they will have a better idea of what we own, and we can serve them
more efficiently." Other features on the website include a virtual exhibit
of some of the treasures from the Rockefeller Library's rare book and
manuscript collections and special indexes to articles in The Colonial
Williamsburg Journal and The Colonial Williamsburg Interpreter.
Of special interest is an index to the several hundred research reports
written at Colonial Williamsburg over the last sixty years. Early
American History Research Reports are distinguished for the significant
amount of primary source material in them and for their time and place
specificity: eighteenth-century Virginia.
The John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library is a research library specializing in
the history and culture of the colonial Chesapeake. It is located near the
Historic Area at 313 First Street and is open to the public. Library hours
are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friends,
The flow from PML is more than I can handle to forward, and another PML
user has suggested to me that a) there may be copyright issues and b) I
doubly complicate life for others who are subscribed to PML.
Net net: I encourage you to take advantage of this resource yourselves, for
all your major surnames. For $24 a year, you can probably turn up some
spectacular material.

Christen,
The time frame is pretty close+ADs- however, the Elizabeth CARTER I am looking
for md Andrew RICHARDS, 27 Feb 1810, in Champaign Co, OH. His family were
in northern KY a few years before, so I'm guessing that hers most likely
were too.
Almost all of the early settlers in Champaign Co were in KY for a while
before they went to OH, it seems. Many of them had been in Greenbrier Co.,
VA(now WV) prior to that.
Thanks for your reply. Maybe these Elizabeths are cousins, or, something.

Re descendants of William Carter of Middlesex County, VA--I'm sorry that
I don't have any clear connections for you. However, it's entirely possible
that your William descends from a child of Henry and Millinder Carter,
as I don't have records of all of their children.
1. Elizabeth b. abt. 1775
2. Tandy b. abt. 1777
3. Martha b. abt. 1778
4. Reuben Allen b. abt. 1778 m. Elizabeth Harrald 3Feb1803
5. William b. abt. 1785
6. Philadelphia b. abt. 1787
7. John Henry b. abt. 1789
8. Washington b. March 6, 1792 (my line)m. Catherine Key
9. Nancy b. abt. 1794
10. Sally or Sarah b. abt. 1796
Some of these children went to MO or KY around 1828, but that doesn't rule
them out as possible parents to your William. I have spouse's names for
more of these children but can't access them right now; I'll e-mail them
to you tomorrow. I hope this helps.

I'll get things started, I hope, with my roll call:
HEUSTON family living in Bonanza beg about 1912. Lots of kids! The father was
Jerome DeWitt HEUSTON, wife was Sarah Ann CARTER HEUSTON. Children:
Fannie Lyndall Celeste, John Travis, Bruce Hunt, Lois Adela, Christine (who
committed suicide in Bonanza in 1915 and made the front page of the Klamath
paper), Lois Celeste, Martha Esther Hartselle.
Within several years of moving there, the parents separated, living in the same
town for the remainder of their lives (until 1950 and 1955) but never speaking
again. Jerome (Jack or J.D.) wrote his horse most everywhere; on occasion,
he'd
ride a bus apparently because people talked about him getting on the bus in the
1940's with his 6 shooter tucked into the front of his pants!
Let's see, Heustons married: Maxwell, Noe, Chamberlain, Wood (would LOVE to
find
descendants of E.T. Wood, especially, because of the history between him and my
grandmother.............) Moulds, Turpin, Lundy..........among others.
Hope to hear from someone!

Amy, I see too many common names to let this one go by. I don't know for
sure if my g-g-grandfather (William A. Carter, b.4/3/1812, d.1/17/1901)
is descended from William Carter of Middlesex Co. VA, because I have been
unable to establish exactly where my guy was born or even his parent's
names. However, your posting mentions so many names that seem to repeat
themselves in my line, I was hoping you might be able to tell me whether
or not there is a connection here.
My William A. Carter married Sally Lydia Kinser in Monroe County TN on
7/30/1841. She came from Greene County TN. Between the years of 1843 &
1868, this couple had 16 children, all born in eastern TN: David F. Carter,
Eagleton Monroe Carter, John W. Carter, William Henry Carter, George Washington
Carter, Marion Columbus Carter, Phillip F. Carter, James L. Carter, Emily
Susan Carter, Francis J. Carter, Mary Victory Carter, Narcissus Jane Carter,
Thomas Carter, Louisa M. Carter, Joseph M. Carter, and Martin Carter. William
& Lydia's household is listed on the 1860 & 1870 census for Polk Co. TN.
They migrated to Hunt County, TX in the late 1800s. Can you confirm a
connection
for me?

of about 1904 to 1909, in which he mentions going for dinner at 'Uncle'

Louisa McCarty's parents were James McCarty, b. abt 1807, d. 10 Apr

Subject: [NCNASH] Moody - Carter, NC
Warren/Northampton--> Nash County, NC
I am looking for information on John MOODY-m- Esther RICKS (Griffins Twp,
Nash Co). His first wife was Harriet (last name unknown, 1880 Census). John
has a lot of children ( Judge, Clyde, Robert, Nathaniel/Norman, Curtis, Sue,
Pat, Annie, Cary, Billie, Johnnie, WIllie, Rose, Charles) between both wives
but I am interested in his daughters Zater (Zeatta) and Sallie MOODY. Zater
is listed in the 1910 Census as living with her sister and her husband,
Sallie and William "Babe" CARTER (father: Henry CARTER (Warren County),
mother: Priscilla TONEY (Spring Hope - related to William Toney Funeral
Home). Zater never married Burl COLEY but they had a daughter named Berta
MOODY. Later Zater and James ALSTON had a daughter named Lula Bell Moody
ALSTON. Berta MOODY never married Frederick Douglas ARRINGTON but they had a
son named George ARRINGTON who later legally changed his name to George
CARTER (Nash County). Berta MOODY is listed in the 1920 Census as Berta
CARTER only because she lived in the household of her sister and her husband.
In those days if the male head of the family supported you or your children
in their home you were called by their last names but illegally of course and
that is how most people names are listed in the census records. Berta/Roberta
later married Ulysses PITTMAN from Edgecombe County and they later moved to
Baltimore, MD. (When they died they were buried at Cedars Hills Gardens or
Mt. Minans Cemetery in Baltimore, MD.)
Priscilla and Henry CARTER children are William, Luzianna, Henry, Wiley, Lias
& Lazarus (twins), June and Mary.
Sallie and William CARTER (1st marriage) children are Almeda, Etta, Henry,
John, Josphine, Lillie, Sarah Ada and Willie. Beulah and William CARTER (2nd
marriage) children are Arnetta, Elbert, Lajetta and William. The CARTERs
attended O'Dell Baptist Church (Littleton) and Manns Chapel Church (Nash
County). Some descendants still live in the Swift Creek area. Their church
memberships and burials are at Swift Creek Missionary Baptist Church /
Cemetery.
John MOODY, Henry CARTER (Native American - Warren County) and William CARTER
(1/2 Native American) were all listed as land owners. Their lands were passed
down through their children and some brought their own land. The majority of
the people above were listed as mulattos.
Please email all replies to me. Any info whether large or small will be most
helpful. If you have assess to listed surname mailing list please feel free
to forward this query to them and anyone else you may think that could be of
any help to me with my family.
Thanks for your help.
Have a Blessed Day,
Brenda

Subject: [NCNASH] Hilliard (Midwife), Carter, Moody Ties
I attended my aunt's funeral on January 15 at Social Union Baptist Church
(Nashville). My relatives know that I am the family historian of both sides
of my family. While home my uncle told me about a midwife named Berta
Hilliard. He said he thought she may have been a Ricks. As she birth children
she recorded all birth in a book. I understand this book is now in
circulation and being used to proof the birth of people without birth
certificates. She delivered babies in the Red Oak - Swift Creek areas. I
would like more info on ths lady and book. I hope someone reading this post
knows of this or some family member I will be able to contact.
I am looking for my grandmother's birth information. She would have went by
the names of Berta Moody, Berta Coley or Berta Carter. She is listed on the
1910 census as Berta Moody with her mother, Zeatta Moody. She was 2 years old
at the time and her mother was 21. They were living with Sallie and William
"Babe" Carter. Sallie is Berta's aunt (mother's sister) and Zeatta's sister.
On the 1920 census there is a Alberta Carter (3) and Berta Carter (11 -
Berta's last name has now changed to from Moody to Carter, she is also listed
as a daughter now) listed in William and Sallie's household. I have no idea
who Alberta is. Zeatta is no longer listed in that household.
Also I would like to know if anyone has heard of Rocky Land or Rocky Land
School and Swift Creek School. It's the area with the big steel trestle
bridge. The bridge is called Hilliard Mill Trestle Bridge and was built in
1925. My father was born in 1921 and use to walk across that bridge as a
child. A lot of my family members attended these schools. I would like the
history and enrollment info of both these schools. My relatives that attended
these schools are now in their 50s and 70s. I don't know how long the schools
were or have been opened. I know Swift Creek School is now open.
I understand Social Union has a cemetery, if you know where the cemetery is
located, please let me know. It never crossed my mind on Saturday to ask. My
aunt says that is where my great grandmother, Tempie Devereux Whitley was
buried.
Thank you very much for any help you can give me.

Kay,
I have made up a list of CARTERs who are probably closely related, possibly
they are siblings. If so, it seems likely that their father is the Caleb
CARTER in Mason Co., KY records. This is all hypotheical but some, if not,
all of these folks are connected one way or another. Some of these dates
are estimated, before, after,
etc. but that qualification doesn't show in this kind of chart. This is

Reverend John Corn -part 1
John Corn the oldest son of Adam and Hannah Heatherly Corn was born
October 18,1813, in the Cullowhee community of Buncombe, nowJackson County,NC.
He became a preacher early in life along with his father and brothers, Alfred
and Jesse. They preached to the Indians, preaching and organizing churches
in Western NC. and North Georgia. He moved from Buncombe in the year 1839
with his father and others of the family, settling in Union County, later to be
Towns.
On November 10,1836, John Corn and Mary Wade(Polly)Carter were
married in Rabun County,by Reverend Robert Wood,Justis of the Peace.
Polly was the third child of Jesse Carter and Lavina Sams Carter, and a
lineal descendent of Edward and Margaret Carter of Aston,Bampton
Parish,Oxfordshire,England, who came to Penn's colony in the fall of 1682.
Jesse and Lavinah sams Carter moved in 1821 from Big Ivy River
in Buncombe County to Rabun. The family settled in the valley of
the Little Tennessee. No doubt John and Polly had known each other in
NC.Polly had been born on the Atkins branch farm on Big Ivy River on
September 20,1810.
After John and Polly's marriage, they went back to Cullowhee,NC. to
live. But they became restless for a new and undeveloped country. They moved
with Adam Corn to Union County, Georgia. In 1845,at the organization
of the Southern Baptist Convention in Augusta,Georgia, the messengers sent
from Union County were Reverend John Corn, Reverend Elijah Kimsey, Reverend
Elisha Hedden, and Major Josiah Carter. The four messengers made the trip to
Augusta in Major Carter's carriage, driving two good horses.Josiah was John
Corn's brother-in-law.
John Corn, with his wife and oldest child, Lucinda Caroline,
first bought land in the Bearmeat section of Towns county. In
1852,he bought land on Upper Hightower. Here he reared his family and spent
the remaining years of his life.
Reverend John Corn -part 2
Reverend Corn pastored the Head of the Tennessee Baptist
Church in Rabun at different times from 1845 to 1875.Before any church was
organized in Union County,he and his family attended this church.Polly had
been one of the charter members of this church when it was organized in
1827.The pastors salary for preaching once a month on Saturday and Sunday
was $4.00 per month.Later this was raised to $5.00,according to the minutes
book.Macedonia Baptist Church of Towns County licensed John Corn to preach
on December 17,1842.He was ordained at Macedonia on November 16,1844, with
Adam Corn, Singleton Sisk, and James Kimsey forming the Presbytery.
He was baptized along with his brother Alfred in the Hiawassee River by
their father, Elder Adam Corn, into membership at Macedonia in 1841.
The Hightower Church was served by John Corn
for many years.He never asked
pay for his services to this church in the community in which he lived. He also
preached at the Bell Creek Church and Old Union. He pastored at Franklin and
preached in the Valley River Community in NC.John Corn served as first
moderator of the Hiawassee Baptist Association in 1849. Late in 1860 John
Corn and Elijah Kimsey were the two delegates from Towns County to the
convention that met at Milledgeville, after A.Lincoln had been elected
president,to decide whether or not Georgia should secede from the
Union. They made the trip by horseback. The trip was more than 400 miles. Both
men were opposed to secession and voted against it.
At the age of 48,John Corn was drafted into the cival war.
Confederate Pension records show that he was elected Captain of Company
D,24th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, June 21,1861.He resegned his
commission May 22,1862. John Corn was the owner of a Negro girl,Harriet age
7,whom he bought from josiah carter for $750.00 on August 17,1861. On March
7,1863, John bought a second girl Susan age 14, from josiah Carter, for
$1600.00. In May of 1862,
John Corn had purchased at sale in Columbia,SC. for $850.00 a boy, Hansun,
age 17.Upon John Corn's resignation his son John H. enlisted in Company
A,6th regiment,Georgia Cavalry, serving until the end of the war.
to be contined...................
I think I lost part 3, or maybe there wasn't a Carter reference in it!
Part 4
Reverend John Corn-conclusion
The end of John Corn's useful life came early at the age of
62.In the early fall of the year,1874, he was elected Representative of
Towns County in the Georgia Legislature. Late in the year he went on some
mission either as a preaching journey or a visit to one of the family,or
perhaps he was on his way to the State Capital at Milledgeville to the
Legislature. He was taken ill and was brought back home in a very weakend
condition, soon developing pneumonia, living only a few days after reaching
home.He died January 2,1875 and was buried in the family graveyard near the
old home.John had been a charter member of Unicoy Lodge No.267,and the
Masonic Order had charge of the funeral. The 19th Psalm was read at the
graveside. Governor James Smith ordered the ordinary of Towns County to
hold an
election to fill the vacancy created by John Corn's death.Samuel Y.Jameson
was elected to fill the vacancy. He was great-uncle of Dr.S.Y.Jameson,once
president of Mercer University. Four years after the death of John Corn,
Polly passed away,January 14,1879.She is buried beside John in the family
cemetary near the old houseplace on Upper Hightower.
The children of John and Mary Wade Carter Corn are.....Lucinda
Caroline b.April 1,1838. Her first marriage was to Charles Lafayette
Mckinney on November 9,1854.They reared three children. Her second marriage
was to Reverend Will Eller. There were three children from this
marriage. They lived in Upper Hightower community and are buried at Upper
Hightower Baptist Church.
Hannah Lavina named for her grandmothers,Hannah Heatherly Corn and

the Tallulah River section of Rabun, a son of James and Patsy Morris
Stonecypher on September 4,1856.They reared a large family and lived in

Church.Lavina died April 21,1927.

and Rachel Mckinney Dillard on August 6,1867.She was born February 19,1851
and died on November 16,1937.They reared 12 children.
Mary Adeline born November 3,1845 and died January 18,1867.She was an
invalid and never married.
Nancy Elizabeth Corn born July 1,1848,married Ransom E.Smith, son of
John F. and Sarah Fuller Smith of Rabun,on December 20,1866.They reared a
