Benjamin CARTER s/o Caleb CARTER, b) 1787, near Knoxville, TN d) 1866, Union Co., OH m) 1812, Champaign Co., OH, Mary (Polly) OWEN d/o Worret.
I was looking for the ancestors of Mary PATRICK OWEN, wife of Caleb CARTER and I received this from an OWEN researcher. Maybe you have the same info. Can anyone confirm or refute this for me? What I have on the CARTER Webpage http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Garden/3471/ shows Mary Patrick OWEN as second wife of John OWEN and mother of Ebenezer OWEN. According to OWEN info below, Mary Patrick OWEN and John OWEN were also the parents of Mary (Polly) OWEN, who married Benjamin CARTER.
Thanks, Barb
<Helen Evans has done extensive research on this family, as I mentioned
before. She says that John also had land in Frederick Co VA, and that he
was in the VA militia during the Revolutionary War. Evidently he died
before he could claim a pension on his Rev War service, which robs us
researchers of the documentation of this service (at least, he's not listed
in Virgil White's "Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files," which is a
fairly comprehensive listing). John moved with his father to Harrison Co VA
abt 1760, and then to Champaign Co OH in 1806 with his second wife and ten
children.
Children of John Owen and his unknown first wife (who probably died between
1788-95 in Harrison Co VA):
1. Elizabeth H. OWEN (my ancestor)
Born May 1782, Harrison Co VA (Beers History of Union Co OH)
Married 6 Dec 1798, Harrison Co VA (according to Lisa Sorensen)
to Ebenezer CHENEY, s/o Thomas CHENEY and Keturah OWEN
Died Nov 1828, Essex-Union-OH (Beers History)
2. James OWEN
Born abt 1783, Harrison Co VA
Married 1803, Harrison Co VA (Helen's info), to Rebecca HENRY
Died 1839, OH (Helen's info)
3. Francis OWEN
Born abt 1784, Harrison Co VA
Married 1) unknown, 2) Sarah TUCKER (Helen's info)
Died 1813, OH (Helen's info)
4. Worret OWEN
Born abt 1786, Harrison Co VA
Married 1810, Champaign Co OH, to Juliann BROCKWAY (Helen's info)
Died 1821, OH (Helen)
5. John OWEN III
Born 19 Jan 1788, Harrison Co VA (Helen)
Married 27 Sep 1808, Goshen Twp-Champaign-OH (Beers)
Died 22 Feb 1853, OH (Helen)
Children by John OWEN and his 2nd wife, Mary PATRICK (b.1774 in MA, Helen's
info)
1. Mary Ann "Polly" OWEN
Born 1796, Harrison Co VA (Helen)
Married 1812, Champaign Co OH, to Benjamin CARTER (Helen)
Died 1871, OH (Helen)
2. Sarah OWEN
Born 1797, Harrison Co VA (Helen)
Married 28 Mar 1816, Champaign Co OH, to Ferrell BAKER
(Beers History of Champaign Co)
Died abt 1832, OH (Helen)
3. Jane OWEN
Born 1798, Harrison Co VA (Helen)
Married 1813, Union or Champaign Co OH, to Remembrance WILLIAMS
(Helen)
4. Hannah OWEN
Born 1801, Harrison Co VA (Helen)
Married 1818, Champaign Co OH, to Jesse S. BATES (Helen)
Died 1877, OH (Helen)
5. Ebenezer OWEN
Born 1804, Harrison Co VA (Helen)
Married 1829, prob Union Co OH, to Elizabeth CURL (Helen)
When John OWEN died in Champaign Co in 1808, his widow Mary (Patrick) Owen
married Caleb CARTER on 7 April 1812 and moved with him to Union County.
OWEN GROUP SHEET TWO
John Owen's father, John Sr. (b. abt 1700-1710), appears to have been a
mountain man of sorts. Lisa Sorenson believes he came originally from New
York. According to Helen's research, he had a trading post near Fort Pitt
PA (Greene Co) in the 1740s. In 1757 he moved to Harrison Co VA, but he
also owned land in Hampshire Co VA (1761) and Monongalia Co VA (1773). He
was killed by Indians in 1778 in Harrison Co VA.
John Sr. and his wife Janet had possibly three sons:
1. James OWEN
Born abt 1735, also killed by Indians in 1782, Harrison Co VA
2. Owen OWEN(S)
Born abt 1740, married Mary THOMAS (Lisa's info)
3. John OWEN Jr. (Helen's info)
After John Owen Jr. died in 1808, there was a big mix-up in his land
holdings, and a chauncery suit resulted in 1854. I wrote to Pat Stickley of
the Champaign Co OH Genealogical Society, and she sent me a copy of the
document. It names all ten of his children and in most cases, their spouses
and children. I have it transcribed on my computer, which is in storage
(I'm using my mother's at the moment); as soon as I get moved into my house
and get my computer back, I will send a copy to all of the researchers in
our little group.>

Emmanuel Co., Ga. in 1820 and 1830--later in Horry County.
Also looking for Isaac and Matthew Carter who were in Effingham County, Ga.

I was just going back through older postings and re-read yours. Could you
check your index to see if there is a Thornton Carter listed? He was born
1778, apparently in Virginia, but I can't find his parents anywhere!! Thanks
so much. Carolyn Moore
I am searching for James Carter, of Rowan Co, North Carolina. He had a
daughter Mary, who married a Jonathan Boone. It seems from all accounts
James Carter was not what you might call an upstanding citizen. In the Rowan
County records, in a deed dated April 31, 1756, it states " Mary, wife of
Jonathan Boone, ajoiner, and daughter of millwright James Carter". I know
that James Carter was born in Southampton Township, Bucks Co, PA and he left
home and relocated to Appoquinimikn Creek District on the border between Pa
and MD, which is now Delaware. Sometime around 1743 he moved to Augusta
County, VA, where he built a mill and lived for approx 3 years before moving
to the Yadkin River in 1747. By 1756 he was in some trouble and deed his
belongings to his daughter and son in law, Mary and Jonathan Boone, as well
as some land to his granddaughter Abigail. He died in 1765 in Salisbury.
Do any of you know this gentleman?
Thanks for your help,

Descendants of the Rev. Thomas Carter may find this of interest.
I had the opportunity to visit First Congregational Church in Woburn MA
the other day and, while there, I picked up a copy of a pamphlet that
serves as an introduction to the Church. It has this to say about the
founding of the Church and its first minister:
"In 1640 the tide of migration from old to New England was at flood. To
the migrants, the Massachusetts Bay Colony promised a haven and a good
home. In that year, 1640, Charlestown, seeking farming land and space
for homes, received permission to set aside four square miles for
settlement, to be called Charlestown Village, our present Woburn.
In August 1642, seven men 'connected by covenant with First Church in
Charlestown' requested dismissal from that Church in order to 'gather
themselves' as a Church for the new community. These seven were:
Edward Converse, Edward Johnson, William Learned, John Mousall, and
three brothers, Ezekiel, Samuel, and Thomas Richardson. The first
minister, Rev. Thomas Carter, was ordained on December 2, 1642 in the
small barn-like structure situated at the westerly end of the present
Common. In its first three centuries of history, the Church has had six
different buildings.
The First Meeting House was built in 1642 as far as can be determined.
This Temple of God in the wilderness stood 'in a small plain where four
streets meet,' the present Montvale Avenue, Main Street, Pleasant Street
and Common Street, or to describe it as it is, at the southwesterly
corner of the Common. There were no pews within, only rough benches,
The parsonage of the Reverend Thomas Carter, first minister, can be seen
in the rear (in the accompanying drawing). This first church building
was taken down in 1672."

I am hoping someone has some information about the ancestry of my
g-g-grandmother;
Catherine CARTER, b. 5 Aug 1818 in MD
m. 1842 in Montgomery co., OH
Solomon SILKNITTER.
Obituary for Catherine (Carter) Silknitter;
"Catherine (Carter) Silknitter was born in Maryland August 5, 1818, and
died at her home, two miles west of Centerville, August 10, 1899, aged 81
years and 5 days. Her maiden name was Catharine Carter. She married Solomon
Silknitter in Ohio in 1836. They moved from Ohio to Indiana in an early day
and from Indiana to Iowa in 1850, where she lived until called to her long
home.
To Mr. and Mrs. Silknitter eleven children were born all of whom survive
save one. The names of the children are as follows;
Henry P., living with his family at Rose Hill, Kas.
Mary J., wife of J. M. Elgin of Centerville
Benjamin F., residing with his family in Centerville
Rebecca S., wife of R. S. Thompson of Wilcox, MO
Hiram W. of Rose Hill, Kas
Lovina S., wife of Charles Smith of Centerville
John Powell of Centerville
Chloe M., died July 23, 1860
Jacob A
Susannah R.
Eli E., of Chicago
Solomon Silknitter died March 4, 1865, aged 48 years.
Mrs. Silknitter was all her lifetime a consistent, earnest member of the
Presbyterian church. She was one of the charter members of this
organization in Centerville. She had been ill but a few days when death
came to her relief at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Smith, two
miles west of Centerville, where recent years she had made her home. The
funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, August 12, at 2:00 o'clock, the
service being conducted by Rev. C. G. Miller, pastor of the First
Presbyterian church of Centerville, who took for his text Rev. 14:13. The
quartette sang some beautiful hymns expressive of hope and immortality,
after which a large concourse of people followed the remains to their last
resting place in Oakland cemetery. And, thus has passed from our midst
another long and useful life. Of this one it could truthfully be said that
she made the world better for having lived in it. The life on earth is
ended but its influence for good shall yet continue; for, "she being dead
yet speaketh."
