Hello! I am new to this list, so I thought I'd introduce myself and give
you what I have on my Carter line, and see if anyone can help me fill it out
a little.
I started working on my family tree about a year ago, when I was given a
copy of the family tree my (still-living at age almost 100) put together for
her DAR application a long time ago. I took that tree, plugged it into
FamilyTreeMaker, got on the net, and haven't looked back!
Anyway, my Carters are as follows, and I would love to flesh out this
line...I've not had too much luck with it (the items with questions marks
are data taken directly from my ggmother's tree...she unfortunately did not
list any sources for her info...)
1. (Rev.) Joseph W. CARTER b. 1814? in unk. d. 1862? in unk.
m. Rachel WALKER Mar 23, 1848 Hancock Co, IL.
2. George CARTER b. 1848? in Ohio? d. 1876? in Cisco, Piatt Co,

I am in Cass County, Texas, and will check to see if there is a record in
the Cass County courthouse of the birth of Tennesse Dmanda Carter in 1855.
Cass County was organized in 1846, and included what is now Marion County;
the original county seat of Cass County was Jefferson, which is now the
County Seat of Marion County. The current courthouse in Linden, Texas, has
been in continuous use since 1872; I believe a previous courthouse may have
been destroyed by fire. At any rate, I will check Cass County records first
and if I find none, will check at Jefferson the next time I am there. (I was
in the Jefferson courthouse yesterday, but may not be back again for two or
three months.)
I know of no place in Cass County named Fairest Home; could that have
been the name of a plantation? There are several large plantation homes
still in and around Jefferson, Texas, but few, if any, in Cass County.

Went back to Cass County Clerk's office today, and they check their
computer index and told me there was no death certificate on file in Cass
County for L.Y.B. "Brack" Carter, who died in 1941, nor for Susan Carter, who
died in 1911, both of whom are buried at Cave Springs Cemetery. I will try
to contact Estelle Swinford, who was the informant for the Cave Springs
section of the Cass County Genealogy Society Cemetery Volumes, to see where
she obtained her information. Obviously, if Brack Carter is in an unmarked
grave, she didn't get it off the headstone. Will keep you posted. Will also
check cemetery books for other names you gave me.

I would appreciate knowing susan's and Brack's parents if poassible.
This privacy thing makes researching difficult in Illnois. records are
shut if one doesnot have a genealogical card.
I believe it is more that the clerks don't want to be bothered.
It was nice of you to take time to research all this. I can plug in

Thank you,

I just obtained two death certificates, as possibilities for my
great-great-grandfather, John Henry Carter from the Ohio Historical Society
death indices.
#1
John H. Carter, died February 5, 1943, in Columbus at 532 North Champion
Avenue. He was the husband of Fredonia Carter. He was a press operator at
the Ralston Steel Car Company. He was born in Hollins, Virginia to Wesley
Carter and Cassie Thomas, on February 19, 1888. He was buried in Greenlawn
Cemetery.
#2
John Carter, died October 2, 1944, in Columbus in Children's Hospital. He
was born April 14, 1944, the son of Jack H. Carter and Ada Preston in New
Vienna, Ohio. He was buried in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery in New Vienna, Ohio.
If either of these are relatives of yours, please e-mail me and I will
immediately send the death certificate.

Mary-
Had a few minutes to spend at the County Clerk's office this
afternoon, and tried to gain access to the death records, but couldn't do so.
I think the computer was down. However, they do have a set of books
published by the Cass County Genealogy Society, which lists all the people
they could identify who are buried in Cass County Cemeteries. There are
about eight volumes, and I went through the index of each volume looking for
the names you gave me. I found Susan Carter, listed under the Cave Springs
Cemetery listing. According to the information in the book, which supposedly
came from her headstone, she was born 8 January 1858, and died 11 February
1911. She is the wife of L. Y. B. Carter, and the parent of Martha Estell
Carter. The same book said that, according to Cave Spring Cemetery records,
as provided by Estella Swinford, L. Y. B. "Brack" Carter (born 17 November
1860; died 10 October 1941; husband of Susan Carter) is also buried in Cave
Springs Cemetery, but in an unmarked grave. Other Carters at Cave Springs
Cemetery include Noland Carter, age 10 months, with the date "1887" on his
headstone; Nolan Carter (born 26 February 1883; died 14 April 1931; husband
of Mattie), buried in an unmarked grave; Ola Mae Sellers Carter (born 30
October 1880; died 22 June 1948) buried in an unmarked grave; and Mattie N.
Bradley Carter (born 25 February 1876; died 6 April 1927) whose personal
information discloses that: she was the wife of (1) David P. (I don't know
if it is David P. Carter, or David P. Bradley) and (2) John Carter; the
daughter of Bonapart & Patsy Driver; the sister of Sallie, James, Nannie,
Josie & Pierce; and the parent of Thomas Lee, Laura Alice & Etta.
I didn't find O. V. Carter or E. M. Carter, but I didn't have much
time to look. I'll try again next time I'm there. Some other Carters I did
note were buried in the Linden Cemetery: Cecil Foster Carter (born 11 August
1920; died 12 February 1950); Cecil Franklin Carter (born 14 August 1896;
died 8 October 1951); and Ollie Mae Carter (born 1 March 1901; died 22 July
1991).
I'll also press the County Clerk to look up the death certificates
for me, as I assume you'll want to know who the parents of Susan, "Brack,"
E.M., and O. V. Carter were, and where these folks were born. The recent
trend toward protecting the privacy of these personal records has made it
difficult to obtain access to birth and death records.
Please let me know if there is anyone else, or any other records, you
would like checked?

Actually it's Amon Carter, not Ammon Carter. I beleive he was also the
founder of the Ft. Worth Star Telegram as well as a philanthropist. He
was born north of Ft. Worth somewhere.
My ggg-grandfather was Amon Bond who married Sarah Elizabeth Carter in
TN. They came to TX in the 1850's. Family stories say that we are kin to
Amon Carter, but I haven't made that connection yet.
