Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Does anyone here have a Joseph CARTER who was at least 21 in 1823, he's
listed as an administrator of an estate in 1823 of someone I'd like to
find out more about. Joseph is most likely a relative of his wife.
Thanks,
Mike Estes

As I just found a bit of new information this week, I'm going to ask the
group if anyone has anything on either of these men.
Samuel CARTER, b. 1820-1822 in VA (or so he told the census in IA in 1850=
,
no other confirmation) m. Clarissa PARRISH 8 Apr 1841 Tuscarawas Co.
OH(confirmed by marriage records). Clarissa is listed as the daughter of
Joshua PARRISH and Sarah ROLAND in Ancestral File and a published genealo=
gy,
but there are so many errors and inconsistencies in the line as published
that I am reserving judgement on that connection until clarified by furth=
er
research. The couple resided in Walnut Twp., Jefferson Co., IA in 1850,
verified by census.
Samuel CARTER d. 1 Jan 1854 according to an undocumented family group she=
et
published by the Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society in 1982. He was n=
ot
with the family in the 1860 census. Clarissa was working as a domestic.
In the 1850 census, the family consisted of Samuel and Clarissa, dtr Mary
CARTER, age 6, b. abt 1844 in OH, son Charles CARTER, age 4, giving a b.
date of 1846 in OH (but the above mentioned family group sheet lists him =
as
Charles Johnson CARTER b. 25 Nov 1844 in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas Co., O=
H),
and Eli CARTER, age 1, b. in IA (Eli Jackson CARTER b. 14 Feb 1850 in Wal=
nut
Twp., Jefferson Co. IA according to his death certificate).
In the 1860 census, we find Clarissa CARTER, age 35, b. OH, but listed wi=
th
Amanda CARTER, age 18 (Mary's other name, unsure of age?)b. IN, Charles J=
.,
age 16 (agrees with earlier b. date)but b. IN, and Alvin (Eli?) CARTER, a=
ge
8, b. IA. Either Clarissa or the census taker wasn't terribly accurate.
The next mention of Eli CARTER in public record is in the Denver City
Directory of 1892, where he's listed as a carpenter living in Harman,
Arapahoe Co. CO. In between he's gotten married at least once and had at
least two sons, James Guilford CARTER, b. 8 Mar 1891, Denver, CO and Fran=
k
CARTER, dates unknown. Eli CARTER died 7 Sep 1942 in St. Joseph, Buchanan
Co., MO and was buried 9 Sep 1942 in Courter-Ritchey Cemetery, Troy,
Doniphan Co. KS.
Family story says Eli's wife, mother of James Guilford CARTER, left her
husband and sons when the boys were young. Apparently there was enough il=
l
feeling around that her name was not mentioned again. Both Eli's and Jame=
s'
death certificates list her as "unknown". Eli remarried, date unknown,
wife's name Mary, last name unknown, and had at least on additional son,
Archie CARTER.
I'd love to find out the name of Eli's wife. Apparently someone is
researching the family of Charles Johnson CARTER and his wife Arrena J.
SKINNER b. 18 Jul 1851 Keokuk Co., IA, so I'd be happy to hear from anyon=
e
in that line. Actually, by this time I'd be delighted to know if anyone h=
as
ever HEARD of ANY of these people:) My grandfather, James Guilford CARTER=
,
undoubtedly existed, as I knew him. I'm beginning to wonder what wisps he
sprung from, though, as his pedigree has been extremely elusive. To make
matters even more complicated, apparently Eli may not have been too fond =
of
his name, as the family always called him "John". So if anyone has a John
CARTER that fits in here, please write. I have traced my father's mother'=
s
family back 350 years, but his father's stops dead with that 1850 census.
Any help would be appreciated.

If so, would you please share with me?

Isaac Howell (1735-1814) was the son of Christopher Howell (1689-1779) and his
wife Johanna. The Howells moved from Southampton, Long Island to Ewing NJ
sometime before the Revolution. Isaac married a Hannah Carter (1736-1804)
probably in NJ. Their son Isaac (1759-1832) married a Rachel Bunn
(1761-1849). Both Isaac the younger and Rachel are buried in the church yard
of the Chester NJ Congregation Church. I am looking for information on the
ancestry of Hannah Carter. I suspect that she may have been part of a family
that moved to the Ewing area from Long Island with the Howells. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all:
Looking for information on a Winston C. CARTER m. Ida Sue CREWS. Together
they had 17 children, one of whom is my grandmother, Ruby Lillian (CARTER)
Soots.
After Ida Sue died, Winston remarried and had at least 8 more children; no
TV back then. Anyone have any info on this CARTER branch? I think Winston
may have hailed from the Amherst Co., VA area. No birth or death dates on
Winston or Ida Sue. Any info appreciated greatly!
Sincerely,
Stacey Yongue
