The MOODYs own a lot of land in Nashville, NC. They also have a very

Nashville, NC. I remember as a little girl how we would go and visit him. One
of my favorite places to go. I use to love to see him roasting those pigs and
playing with his dog. Before he died Uncle Cary took care all the business of
the lumber company. There are still a lot of MOODYs in Nashville and Rocky
Mount, NC.
My grandmother:
Alberta COLEY's first husband was Frederick "Fred" Douglas ARRINGTON. He was
also called Uncle Dudley. They only had one child, George Arrington, who
later had his name legally changed to George CARTER.
Alberta's second husband was Ulysses PITTMAN. They lived in Nash and
Edgecombe Counties and later moved to Baltimore, MD. Where they both died.
Their children: Erma, Theodore, Josephine, Christine, Cloria (Gloria)
and Doug.

I did learn the DEVEREAUXs (Debbrow) had a plantation in Halifax County, NC.
If anyone can shed more light on this, please do so. I know Temperance
(Tempy) Devereaux came from this plantation. SYZB12A(a)prodigy.com can give you
a lot of help on some of your NC plantations. Please Help if you have other
info!
Swift Creek in Whitaker, NC has a lot to do with my family. They even helped
started Swift Creek Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery. The families:
Carter, Moody, Alston, Coley, Arrington, Richardson, Ricks, Cooper. Powell,
Drake and others.
I especially need more info on The ARRINGTONs. Willis ARRINGTON lived in this
community before he moved to Armstong Project (with his daughter Mary) and
later died there.
Any help with these families will be greatly appreciated.

I have two questions.
(1) I have a Jarrell McDaniel who married a Mary ?. Their children are:
Martha, Amanda, Dicey, Julia, Barrett, and Cash born in the 1840's Some
of these sound like Carter names. Does anyone recognize this family?
(2) I have found many Carters with the name Looney somewhere in their
name. Can
anyone tell me when/where the Looneys entered the Carter family?

I will be unavailable until Monday morning, 09-15-97. I'm headed to sunny
downtown Peoria, Illinois for the next few days! (Ugh!) Not for fun, but
company business, so see you when I get back. I thought I'd let you know,
just in case someone tried contacting me during that time. I'm not
ignoring you. So, send your messages, I'll get to them when I get back.
I'm out of here!

HELP!
I just found out from a distant cousin that the (his brother) family had a
letter of introduction to the western frontier dated from the 1700's for a
James Carter. I have to assume that this is either the grandfather or father
of my Vincent Carter b. Feb. 22 1803 Halifax NC>moved to Smith Co. TN 1806.
The letter was stolen in the last couple of years along with a letter from
Abe Lincoln written to a family member. I am sure whoever stole it was after
the Lincoln letter.
So once again I have a clue but I am stuck. Does anyone have a James with
any Vincent family members????
Thanks
Mara

Several years ago I requested the pension application files for Civil War
veteran John Slavens. I received about 12 pages - both front and back
sides - showing application and date received in DC. I learned that John
had gone to Montana, where his wife had died, the names of his children,
and of his second marriage.
In June, I went in person to the archives ane requested the file. I
then learned of the mining accident in which his leg was broken, the axe
accident in which his arm was broken, and finally another accident to his
leg which culminated in his leg being amputated.
Gruesome, yes. But it sure explains a lot in my family.
Point being, I received some good information by mail, but
by going in person, I learned a lot more.

Judy Lee Watts told me that when you receive a pension abstract or file
from the national archives, you only receive the selected records - i.e.
maybe a third of the file. So, for genealogical purposes, one would want
to ask for the entire file, so the select AND non-select files.
This is born out in an article I will partially quote here in the Dallas
Monrning news, 6 Sep 97, Lloyd Bockstruck's column "Family Tree," the
article entitled MILITARY PENSION SOMETIMES TRICKY TO TRACK. Lloyd says:
"....Revolutionary War files can be deceiving. There are two versions of
the microfilm. One contains a selection of up to 10 pages from each
file. The other reproduces the entire contents of each file.
The selected version is contained on 898 rolls of microfilm; the
complete or nonselected files are on 2,670 rolls of microfilm. In other
words, more than a third of the informaton is absent from the selected
files, and these are the ones copied for mail requests."
Lloyd goes on to explain how much more info is contained in these
non-select files, and how they are valuable to the researcher. So,
always ask for the entire file, to include the non-select file.
On a side note, he says "certain pension files for veterans of the Civil
War, Spanish-American War, The Phillipine Insurrection of 1899, and the
Boxer rebellion, are considered to be part of the "recent" genealogical
past. They still may be in the custody of a branch of the Veterans
Affairs Offcice."
By the way, Judy Lee is conducting some fascinating Carter family
research tracing the family from the Carolina's, to TN and KY, and on to
MO and ILL. It will probably be a few more years before her research is
published, but it will be well worth the wait.
