I'm wondering if anyone has information on my ancestor Andrew Jackson
CARTER
[b. 4 Jul 1838]. An old tale I heard was that he was wounded in
the Civil
War. When I got the documents from the Archives, his "wound"
was that a side
of beef fell on his ankle [he was the Regiment butcher]!
His enlistment
papers state he was born in Philadelphia---with a
Southern name like Andrew
Jackson???? 1880 census states he was born in
Tennessee.
He married Anna
Catharine STEIGER 12 Oct 1864 in Massillon (Stark) OH.
From letters she
wrote that I have, his parents were Joseph CARTER and
Anna ?. Evidently Anna
was the third wife, and Joseph [d. 1840] and Anna
[d. 8 Nov 1876] are buried
in a Fred Jumelle lot in Philadelphia.
Known siblings of Andrew are:
Deborah [d. 1890]; Charles who was a
wheelwright; Susan; Elizia [d. 1890];
Ben and Martha, who were full
siblings to Andrew.
Thanks for any
assistance! Ryan

THis is a possibility for my Carter also. My 3rd ggrandmother was Delilah
Carter b. ca1800, NC, maybe Surry or Buncombe. I have not found her parents
or any info about her. She married Jesse Prince ca 1817 in Buncombe, we think.
Their daughter Preshia was my 2ggrandmother. I have suspected this for some
time, as there is family tradition in my direct line, there is Cherokee. Today
I received info from a cousin, sent to her by another cousin, who's
ggrandmother was the youngest daughter of Preshia that agrees with my family
tradition.
I had checked the early Cherokee Rolls in NC and found a number of Carters,
then checked others on down to the Dawes Rolls and found Carters on them and
in IT. Some old photos I have of the family show strong NA characteristics.

Hi Ginny,
I'd appreciate any info you might have on a connection between DANIEL
BOONE (yes, he of the coonskin cap!) and the CARTER family. My father's
cousin, now in her late 80s, is dead set on the idea that the Chester
Co/Union Co CARTERs, (descended from Benjamin of Chester Co) are related
to Daniel Boone. I have NO info to support that, but it would be nice
to be able to confirm it for her, if true. Any info appreciated.

Hi to CountryG and cousins,
I noted your query about Joseph Carter and the Native American part of
his line. Alas, I don't think I can help you with Joseph info (do you
know where he was from or dates?), but I'd be VERY interested in knowing
if anything develops on the "Native American" part of your query. My
generation of the Chester County/Union County, SC, CARTER family
(descended from Benjamin of Chester Co) is quite sure we must be, in
part, Native American. (Many of us have only to look in the mirror or
at photos!) But the few remaining members of the older (now in their
80s) generation either don't know or won't discuss this possibility.
I'd be grateful for any info on this that develops.
Regards to all,

Sorry for the confusion with regard to "datareader". Faithfully, /Tom Nash
in San Antonio, TX... who posts what he feels is pertinent from AOL under
these screen names: bartonash, lipsteady, mailister, datareader, and
filereader. I'm searching John W(esley). Carter (1818-1864), CSA, who farmed
in Fayette Co., GA, ante his death in Richmond, VA, in 1864.

On July 6, <rhunterg(a)ix.netcom.com> asked on CARTER-L:
<<Can you help me out here? Who -- or what - is Datareader? Is this an
automatic indexing program for re-posting all CARTER-related GenWeb
queries to the mailing list? Or did I miss something on a listowner post
from Chuck, our chief-Carter? Sorry to be so techno-illiterate, but was
surprised to see the re-postings.>>
