Hi Everybody,
I posted this information to the list on Monday, but never saw it come
through. So here it is again, if it's a duplicate, my apologies.
While browsing through a History of Lafayette County, MO printed in
1881, there were biographical sketches of some Carter residents of that
county. I'll post them to the list one at a time; hope they link up
with somebody's line.
"W.H. CARTER,
farmer and stock raiser, P.O. Dover. The subject of this brief sketch,
one of the influential citizens of the county, was born January 30,
1842, and is a native of Richmond, Virginia. His father, having made
several trips through the west, and being pleased with the country, made
preparations for removing his family thither, but died in January 1849,
before accomplishing his object. His mother, however, completed the
preparations and moved to this state, November 5, 1848, locating on a
farm, where our subject passed his boyhood-attending the high school at
Dover for several years. In 1864 he entered Bethany College, remaining
there two years. He then spent the same length of time in the Kentucky
university at Lexington, Kentucky. Returning to Lafayette County, he
taught school for six or seven years, the most of the time at Dover.
Since then he has been engaged in farming and stock raising. He was
united in marriage to Miss Ada B. Campbell, daughter of Robert Campbell,
of this county, Dec. 20, 1866. Four children are the fruit of their
union: Jennie, Ollie, Kenneth, and Byron. In November, 1880, he was
elected to represent the eastern district of this county, in the state
legislature; was the democratic candidate and was elected by a large
majority, without any effort on his part; showing his popularity among
the voters of his district. With such men as Mr. Carter in the
legislature, the people may rest assured that public affairs will be
administered upon a basis of right and justice."

Greetings: Besides Carters, is anyone searching these names:
Rector, Dunigan, Lonas, McCarrol, Moore, Sims and McDaniel?
Hoping for a connection.

I am Paul Carter. I completed, last year, a book on Monroe Co. KY
Carters after 7.5 years of research. There was also info on VA Carters,
due to my research in that state. But I also uncovered alot of Carter
info in NC. Bottom line, while I am not actively pursueing genealogy
research anymore, I want to make available info from my book as well as
pass along info that never made it in my book.
To do that, I am going to start postings here that will be useful, I
feel, to all Carter researchers - including research techniques on
Carters, and other useful tidbits.
I will begin those postings very shortly.
I was forwarded an email (Nancy in Corpus, or Elaine?) from a
pahumph(a)eagleweb.com concerning William Carter of Monroe CO KY. But the
mail was undeliverable when I tried to email him. Would like to get
ahold of him - don't think he provided his name. So, I am on the net
now, am available for questions, and wil begin posting useful info
shortly.
If you need more info on Samuel Carter and Ruth Mendenhall That is my Mother
in laws line..
Have you tried the Mendenhall family Assoc.?? The have alot of info and
background info......and on Harveys and Harlans. they have a www page but
don't have the url right now....
will be gone for a week,,,e-me later for the the adress if you cant find it.

I am looking for information on my great grandfather James Carter. He
supposedly was born in GA. He married Mary Bishop (born Oct 18, 1864 in
GA). James Carter supposedly died about the time his last child was
born. Their children were:
Josephine Carter born Jun 17, 1892; married David Staggs
Emma Carter born Nov 7, 1897 (?); married ____ Grubbs
Maude Carter born May 2, 1898; married Thomas Whitt
Mauldin Carter born May 2, 1898 (my grandfather)
Dorothy Carter born Aug 5, 1904; married Milus Herman Lister
They all moved to northern SC - Spartanburg area - in the early 1900s.
I have extensive information on all the children except for Emma
Carter.
Mary Bishop Carter was listed on the 1900 US Census as head of the
household but also listed as married. She and her children were living
in Murphy, NC. I can not find James Carter in the 1900 census.
After James Carter's supposed death around 1904, Mary married Harvey
Thomas in SC about 1908. They had at least four additional children.
Mary died about 1923-1925. She is buried in Gaffney, SC.
I can not find much to link James Carter to Mary Bishop other than some
death certificates. Therefore, I do not know much beyond his name.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul Carter

My 94 year old Grandmother Myrtle Flora Armstrong CARTER passed away 18 June
1997. She had turned 94 on May 8, 1997. The local paper had taken a photo
for a story on the local HOME HEALTH AGENCY that provided home health care
for her for the last year and was to run the picture and story around May 8,
1997. They put off running the story until Wednesday, June 18, 1997, THE
DAY SHE DIED!!!! One of those ironic things that happen in life.
My grandmother CARTER was unique in that she was the last surviving child of
Confederate Civil War soldier A. John ARMSTRONG 1841--1920 [he was 62 when my
grandmother was born in 1903] who served in Company D, 30th Regiment Alabama
Infantry, CSA from 1862 to 1864. He was wounded three times and captured
twice.
The last time he was captured was late in 1864 near Nashville, Tennessee.
He was given the choice of going to a crowded prisoner of war camp and
possibly starving to death or dying of disease [caring for prisoners of war
was a low priority on both sides] or "Taking the Oath of Allegiance to the
Union". By the end of 1864 most of the south knew the war was lost. Her
father took the Oath and was sent "North of the Ohio River where he must
remain until the war is over".
He was in a catch 22 position until the war was over. If he went south and
was captured by EITHER SIDE he would be shot or hung for treason by whichever
side captured him. He came home after the war!!!!
God blessed my grandmother CARTER with a long life and she was in good health
until February of this year. We will miss her but are content with the
knowledge that she was a good christian woman and is now in Heaven for
eternity and we WILL see her again. She was preceded in death by my
Grandfather James Allen CARTER [1889 - 1972] who passed away in 1972 after
being married to my grandmother for 53 years!!!!

Amanda Carter b. ca. 1817 VA m. E.W. Lamb

Charles Carter died Septembet 11, 1906 in Graves Co., KY and is buried
in Clarks River Cemetary. In 1870 Graves Co. census he is married to
Hettie A. Pane, she is buried next to him in Clarks River Cemetary.
Children of Charles Carter are:

Levi Carter b. 1847 KY, d. March 1892 Randolph Co. ARK.
Amanda Carter b. 1850 KY
Mary Carter b. 1852 KY
Jack Carter b. 1853 KY
Ryburn Carter c. 1855 KY
Ledora Carter b. 1857 KY
Charles Carter b. 1858 KY
Levi is my gggrandfather. He married Elizabeth Phipps of Calloway Co.,
KY dau of William H. and Elizabeth Edwards Phipps. Levi and Elizabeth
are lost in 1870 but are in Randolph Co. Ark in 1880 along with William
and Elizabeth Phipps.
In the 1850 Graves Co. KY census compiled by Don Simmons, Jack Carter is
listed as Jacob, on the original census he is listed as Jack as he is on
the 1860 agricultural census of Graves Co. KY. According to the FHC
listings the Simmons compilation used additional records besides the
census but I don't know what those records were. Simmons also has
Charles Carter's wife as Margaret A.J.(Lamb?).
Any info or leads on my Carter line would be greatly appreciated. Also
since I am new to genealogy, how can I find out Jack"s real name and how
do I determine what county in VA Jack and his children were born? Help,
Help, Help.......

Hi, all of you Carter devotees - I had trouble finding you, but you can't
hide from me! This is Nancy in Corpus Christi and I am finally home and
ready to get on with the hunt! I have passed along the new Carter list
address to all that I could think of - I am sure Dave Dollard and Don Ballard
are already here! Paul Jones should be joining shortly with all of his info
on the Monroe Co, KY families, etc.
My Carters: Peter Carter m. Amelia Veale bef. 1750 - Prince Wm. Co., VA and
had children: 1) John, died unmarried 1816 - Loudoun Co., VA; 2) Edward; 3)
Lettice; 4) Morris Veale; 5) Amelia -
Amelia Veale Carter died bef. 1783 in Fairfax Co., VA and Peter married
Hannah Whaley, dau. of James Whaley Sr. and Hannah Higgerson. They had
children: 1) Ephriam (my ancestor); 2) Elam; 3) Elihu; 4) Elizabeth; 5)
Mary; 6) James; 7) Ann; 8) Frances.
It is supposed that the father of Peter was Job Carter, probably son of
Edward Carter and an unknown first wife; Edward would have been son of
Thomas Carter and Katherine Dale. We would like to either prove this or
disprove this and find the real parents of Peter. We do know that Edward's
brother, Capt. Thomas Carter Jr. & Arabella of Lancaster and Amherst Co. had
a son Peter who m. Judith and had a son Job, but that is not our Peter!!
But we also know that Capt. Thomas Sr. had several children that we have
not found much more about -
1) Henry who m. Anne Harris, dau. of Gany - Henry b. 9 Jun 1676, he had 5
sons and 3 daughters;
2) James who moved to Stafford Co. and d. 1743 and m. Mary, dau. of Hugh Bent
of Lancaster Co, and had 6 sons and 1 daughter;
3) Peter, who d. in 1721 - and married twice - had a son and dau. by 1st wife
and a son and dau. by 2nd wife;
4) Joseph, who was High Sheriff in 1741 in Lancaster Co., and m. to wife Ann
- Joseph d. in 1759 and had at least 3 sons and a dau.
Can anyone fill in any of the above families or do they recognize the Job
first mentioned. Thanks to Van Stilley and others, we have most of Peter's
families filled out and would be happy to send info!

I am looking for any info on the Carter families from the Mt.Savage/Frostburg
area of MD. I have a Richard Carter, b.1812, and his son Elias Carter,
b.1850. Elias married a Madonna Susan Beaver who may have been from that same
area. I found Elias on the 1880 census in Mineral Co, WV, working as a miner.
He appeared to be widowed with several small children, one of whom was less
than a month old.
Any info on the Carters of MD would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Burgesses 1642-49, 1653-58; member of the Council of Virginia, 1658-59;

1683, Credenhill, Herefordshire, England, d. 3 Jul 1719, Corotoman, Lancaster
Co., VA, (daughter of Thomas and Mary (de Laval) Landon, Esq.). Robert was
known as "King" Carter due to his immense wealth. He had a remarkable
reputation as a Colonial Official and an agent for Lord Fairfax, V. At the
age of 28, Robert entered the Assembly as a Burgess from Lancaster County,
serving five consecutive years. In 1726 he served as acting governor of
Virginia after the death of Governor Drysdale. He served two terms as agent
for the Fairfax proprietary of the Northern Neck of Virginia, the first being,
1702-1711, and the second term, 1722-32. During his first term, he began to
acquire large tracts of land for himself in the Rappahannock region of
Virginia. After acquiring some 20,000 acres for himself, he was succeeded by
Edmund Jennings. When he became representative of Fairfax's interests again
in 1722, he succeeded in securing for his children and grandchildren some
110,000 acres in the Northern Neck. He also
had additional acquisitions beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.
Robert's gifted and productive life centered around the original Christ
Church, a smaller wooden structure. His parents were buried within the
chancel of the church. A historic marker outside of the Church reads: "Christ
Church was built in 1732, on the site of an older Church by Robert ("King")
Carter, who reserved one quarter of it for seating his tenants
and servants. It is one of the very few colonial churches in America that
have never been altered, a typical early eighteenth-century structure. Robert
Carter is buried here. "(see tombstone inscription and pictures). At his death
in 1732, his obituary in Gentleman's Magazine described his estate to be
"about 300,000 acres of land, about 1000 Negroes, 10,000 pounds in money."

Hello, all - I'm still trying to get started with my research of my
childrens' CARTER family but can't seem to find a connection.
Albert Hiram CARTER was born in 1874 in NE and married Nora CHUBICK,
probably in IA as their first two children were born in IA. The rest
appear, from the census I have, to have been born in Harrison County, MO.
They are:
Goldie P., Mable A., Minnie B., Clara O., Lewis Harvey, Nora G., George A.,
Ruby E.,
and Myrtle R. CARTER. Their birthdates range from 1894 to 1910.
Surely someone has a connection and can help me, please??? Thank you.
