Hello Sue -- your protocol is fine.
First off, I'm not researching this family so don't have a great deal of
information for you. However, perhaps this will help you move forward.
You can probably prove or disprove your theory about Eric T G CARTER being
Eric T Gillmore CARTER by obtaining his birth certificate. In FreeBMD, the
birth of Eric is shown to be indexed as:
Birth; first quarter 1896; CARTER, Eric Thomas G.; district Barton R.;
volume 6a; page 51
The District Barton R. is "Barton Regis" which is described at GENUKI as
follows:
==================
Barton Regis
Created 1st April 1877 (renaming of Clifton district). Abolished 1st
January 1905 (incorporated into Bristol, Chipping Sodbury and Thornbury
districts).
Sub-districts : Ashley; Clifton; St George; St Phillip and Jacob;
Stapleton; Westbury.
GRO volumes : 6a (1877-1904).
[includes:] Clifton (1877-98), Compton Greenfield, Filton, Henbury,
Horfield, St. George (1877-98), St. James Out (1877-98), St. Paul Out
(1877-98), St. Philip and St. Jacob Out (1877-98), Shirehampton, Stapleton
(1877-98), Stoke Gifford, Westbury on Trym, Winterbourne.
Registers now in Bristol district.
===================
While the name itself doesn't guarantee this to be your man, the locality
near Bristol suggests it is indeed him, so your money spent in obtaining
the certificate probably won't be wasted. The certificate will undoubtedly
give the expansion of his initial "G".
You might also consider the fact that forenames like GILLMORE are often
(but not always) maiden names of mothers and look a generation back to see
if Thomas Moravian CARTER's mother was a GILLMORE. This is a little
riskier because, of course, there are lots of possibilities for the source
of the name "Gillmore".
I hope this helps.

I am an Australian art historian, researching the work of Ann
Gillmore
Rees. She was the daughter of Thomas Moravian Carter and Ada Carter (nee
Just). Ann was born in 1900 in Bristol and was originally named Doris
Adeline Carter. Some time in the late 1920s she began using the name Ann
Gillmore Carter. In 1937 she married William Togarmah Rees and shortly
afterwards they migrated to Australia where they remained until their
deaths: Ann in 1982 and William (Bill) in 1983.
I have already have information about this branch of the Carter family
taken from the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses and also information about
the family of Ann's mother (Ada or Adelheid Just) from the same sources.
I have Doris/Ann's birth, marriage and death certificates. I know that
when Ann was born in 1900 they were living in Victoria Square Bristol
and I have been told that in 1912 the family was living in
Westbury-on-Trym where Thomas Moravian Carter also had his surgery (he
was a surgeon).
What I don't have is a great deal of information about her siblings. In
1901 the family comprised Thomas Moravian Carter, his wife Ada and two
children, a son Eric T G (Gillmore?) aged 5 and Doris (Ann), aged 4
months. There were also three servants. I believe that there may have
been another daughter, Agnes, who was born in 1903. My speculation about
Gillmore being one of Eric's middle names is based on the fact that one
of Thomas' brothers was named Gillmore Carter.
If anyone is researching this branch of the Carter family, I would love
to make contact with them. Otherwise, I am hoping to discover a little
more about her siblings. What happened to Eric T G Carter? Quite a
number of Eric Carters are listed on the CWGC site, but there is not
enough information to confirm whether any of them are this particular
Eric Carter. If he was killed during WW1 AND if Gillmore was one of his
forenames, this might account in part for Doris' decision to change her
name. Similarly, I would be grateful for any information as to whether
the Agnes Carter who was born in 1903 and subsequently married William
Heysed was in fact Ann's sibling. (Agnes Heysed was one of the
beneficiaries of the Rees' wills.) And I'd be interested to know if
there were any other siblings.
I know that looking for information can be expensive and time consuming,
so I don't want anyone to look especially for answers to any of these
questions. However, if you have already accumulated information that
might be relevant any details would be much appreciated. In return I am
happy to pass on whatever I can about Doris/Ann (although she and Bill
had no children).
Best wishes,
Sue Wood in Wagga Wagga, Australia
(new to genealogical research, so hoping I have followed appropriate
protocol here)
