Hi,
My GG-GM, Sarah Simpson, was married in Mar 1857. The cert shows her as
Sarah Carter, widow. I haven't been able to find any trace of a first
marriage to a Carter. (I've applied for some certs, but none have matched
with the info so far. No marriage with Sarah's father as William, no births
with mother Sarah Simpson.) No children of Sarah from a first marriage show
up on the 1861 census.
Sarah was born in Evesham, Worcs in 1831. On the 1851 census her family
was living in Aston, Warks. Sarah is in the household, and shown as
unmarried. (But her brother, also in the household and shown as unmarried,
had been married since Jul 1849! His wife is in her father's household, also
single. What the heck?)
Has anyone come across the Mr. Carter who married my Sarah? It was been
suggested to me that they weren't married, but Sarah got the next 3 husbands
to the altar (or Register Office) and my instinct says that she'd have done
the same with #1.)
There is one possible clue --- a muxed ip family legend about the Light
Brigade. Perhaps I'm looking for a Carter who served in the Crimea? Perhaps
the marriage is in some military records?
All suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
Peggy
