Hello Joy
Just a few thoughts re your family.
Is it possible that James was married twice and that Charlotte was his
second wife?
The reason I suggest this is that there is a marriage on the IGI (please
forgive me if you've already seen and discarded it) for a James CARTER and
Charlotte STURMEY 12th September 1815 at Hannington, Wilts.
There is also a marriage on the IGI (but it is a patron contributed one) for
a James CARTER marrying a Charlotte BURTON 22nd Dec 1790 Hanover Square,
London. The contributor has put his birthplace as London, but probably
doesn't know where he was born!
(I do realise that the IGI is not complete and that there are probably many
parishes where James CARTERs lurk). I also know that the IGI is not always
accurate, having just found an inaccurate transcription for the baptism of
one of my CARTER lot in Gloucestershire - they had given him the wrong
parents! And this was the official transcription, not a patron contributed
entry.
There is a marriage (also on IGI) for a Margaret CARTER marrying a John
SMITH 4th Feb 1835 at St Peter, Church St, Liverpool, Lancs.
Have searched for a marriage for Ann to a Townsend both on IGI and on
Freebmd (from Sept 1837) but couldn't find anything. Did notice however that
there were loads and loads of TOWNSENDs in the Bedford area on the IGI. So
maybe Bedfordshire might be an area to search for Ann's marriage.
Could I ask how you have all these accurate birth dates? Are they from a
family bible? And how do you know so definitely that James was born in
Wiltshire if you do not know where? Is it possible that the boundaries have
changed and the county to be searched isn't Wilts now?
These are just a few of my ramblings, and you've probably considered all of
these possibilities before you wrote to the list. I know just how difficult
it is to find these elusive CARTERs. I've got several Johns that I can't
trace, and a will that ties one of these John CARTERs to my ggg-grandfather,
but I can't find the link.
Happy hunting.
