Good Morning Barbara:
Thank you so much for your ideas, and your searches - I appreciate it. Yes,
I have wondered if James was married twice, but I can't prove that he
married Charlotte STURMEY - I would like to think she is the one. James and
Charlotte both died in 1856, before death registration was required here in
Canada. I have found Charlotte's death recorded in the Church register but
it only gives her name and date of death - the Carters were Church of
England. I've obtained death registration for a couple of the family
members but it does not give Charlotte's maiden name.
The dates of birth for this family were given to me by another family
member, and I don't how they obtained them. However, we know from records
here in Canada, that James was 62 when he came to Canada, so this would make
his year of birth pretty accurate. From obits. and death registration for a
couple of the children the year of birth for them, at least, appears to be
correct.
The tombstone for James and Charlotte states they were "Natives of
Wiltshire." However, they came to Canada at the encouragement of John
Arkell, and his cousin Thomas, who apparently lived in Gloucestershire.
Other names of families who came and settled in the same area are Hewer,
Willoughby, Isles, along with many others.
Again, my sincere thanks for all your comments - it's always great to get
someone else's thoughts on a problem.
- Joy
on a lovely Fall day in Canada.
