Thank you, Holly. Obviously, you are very knowledgeable about this, and you
are going about this the best way. I really appreciate you sharing your
expertise. I am learning all the time from you and the other list members.
I especially appreciate you telling me this:

Based on the Coat of Arms, I think it is the Robert "King" Carter line that has
the correct claim but this debate is why I am trying to find a proven descenda
nt of the line in the UK -- to see if they match the Robert "King" Carter line
(R1b-32) or the Pres. Jimmy Carter line (R1b-04).

PS: I would love to have the drawing if you don't mind.

Hi, Patricia,
That all depends on how you define the word "proven". Some people have claimed
that former US President Jimmy Carter is from the Carter's of Garston, Hertfor
dshire line but that is a claim that I dispute. Other researchers claim that R
obert "King" Carter, the acting Governor of Virginia in 1726-1727, was a descen
dant of the Carter's of Garston, Hertfordshire family. The problem is that the
Pres. Jimmy Carter line and the Robert "King" Carter line are not a Y-DNA matc
h. Both Carter lines are Y-DNA Haplogroup "R1b" but the Markers do not match.
These are the first 12 Markers of each. The first row is the Pres. Jimmy Carte
r line and the second row is the Robert "King" Carter line.
R1b-04 : 13 24 14 11 11-14 12 12 10 13 13 29
R1b-32 : 13 23 14 11 11-12 12 12 12 13 13 29
. 1 . . . 2 . . 2 . . .
As you can see, in just the first 12 Markers they are already off by 5.
We have triangulation of the Pres. Jimmy Carter line back to Thomas Carter, Jr.
of Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
We have triangulation of the Robert "King" Carter line all the way back to Robe
rt "King" Carter himself.
Both Thomas Carter, Jr. and Robert "King" Carter are believed to be the sons of
immigrants from England to Virginia and both are the only path for the continu
ation of their Carter lines in the US. That is, Thomas Carter, Jr. did not hav
e a known brother and while Robert "King" Carter had two half-brothers, neither
of the half-brothers is known to have produced a son with the Carter surname.
So, to get triangulation any farther back, we have to go back to England.
I have a diagram that I will email to you off-list that may make things a bit c
learer. I'm assuming this CARTER-UK mailing list does not support attachments.

I am interested in the Carter's of Garston Manor, Watford Parish, Hertfordshire
, England. The Carter's owned Garston Manor from 1534 to 1666. The house that s
tands there today is called High Elms Manor and has been used for several movie
s and is also used for wedding and other special events.

The house that stands there today was build around 1812 -- long after the Carte
r's sold Garston Manor in 1666. I'm wondering what happened to this Carter fami
ly after they sold Garston Manor in 1666.
