I'm looking for more information about 2 James Carters of
Knox Co OH, ca 1830-1850.
On the 1850 Fed. census of Brown Twp, Knox Co OH:
James D Carter 43 farmer 1500 VA (marked illiterate)
Charlotte 49 MD
Joshua 17 labourer OH (marked att. school)
Caroline 15 " "
Sarah E 11 " "
James 4 "
I can't find them on the 1860 index, altho there are some
similar names in other OH counties (incl nearby Licking, I think).
The 1840 Fed. census of Brown Twp, Knox Co OH has on p 345
James Carter 11011 1112001 (M: oldest is 30-40, and F: 40-50)
Some of the 1840 list is missing in 1850.
The 1830 Fed. census of Knox Co OH has 2 James Carters:
Liberty TWP
James Carter Esq 0000101 12001 (M: 40-50; F: 20-30)
Brown TWP
James D Carter 01101 12101 (M: 20-30; F: 20-30)
Both James Carter's are in Knox Co tax lists from 1830-1837.
It appears that the Liberty TWP James Carter is not in the 1838
tax list; or he may be represented by a nearly illegible
listing next to James Carter of Brown TWP (the name appears
to be *am** Carter). Before 1835 James Carter of Liberty TWP
is joined by a John Carter, who is adjacent to him in the
tax list & whose land appears to be next to his, too.
Who are they? Where are they from? Where did they go?
Anyone recognizing or researching these folks, please get
in touch. Thanks, ==mwh (mailto:cecinit@aol.com)
