Laben CARTER was born 28 August, 1822 in Stanly County, North Carolina. He
was the son of Levi and Jane (HOLT) CARTER. The family moved to Henry
County, Tennessee in 1823. He married twice. First to Berrilia JACKSON on
October 2, 1844. He married secondly 5 September 1861 to Nancy SNODGRASS.
In 1863 he came to Jackson County and six months later moved to Franklin
County, Illinois. In 1864 he moved to Williamson County and bought 100 acres
in Carterville Precinct. In November, 1872, he succeeded in locating a post
office at Carterville, which post office and the city around it was named in
honor of the founder and foster father of them both. He soon added forty
acres, and in 1872 leased 120 acres to the Carbodale Coal & Coke Company for
99 years or as long as the coal lasted. He now owns 440 acres and has a
lease on 680 acres and is an able business man. In politics he is a
Republican , first voting for POLK as a democrat before the war. He was a
magistrate of the Fifth District of Henry County, Tenn., six years, and held
the same office in Williamson County, being elected in 1874. He is a Mason,
and he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church he being
one of its trustees. He is also a stockholder and director of the St. Louis
Coal Railroad.
