To the administrator: I'm a descendant of the Carter family from RI. Also descended
from Capt John Fones from Jamestown/North Kingstown. We'd like to know if Shelley
Cardiel still has the Nicholas Brown photo. We'd love it. We're enroute to a
Carter family reunion seeking more answers. There's also a Fo nes Alley at Brown
University which their library can't determine much about. And of course, the Fones
dentists in RI are considered the fathers of American dentistry. We are heading to RI end
of next week hoping to learn more in the places mentioned and the Providence library. Help
with a reply, pls. Joe Carter, gicart8(a)comcast.net

I've "rescued" an old cabinet photograph of Nicholas BROWN which was
produced by the Jones Studio in Providence, Rhode Island. It appears to be
a photograph of a painting with the man in the photograph appearing to be in
his 60's at the time. The photograph was recovered with others representing
the Brown University Class of 1878 including both students and staff.
I believe that this is Nicholas BROWN Jr. for whom the university was named
and that the painting photographed is one by Chester Harding completed in
1836. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following
information regarding Nicholas and his family:
Nicholas Brown was b. 4 Apr 1769 in Providence, RI to parents Nicholas BROWN
(b. 28 Jul 1729 in Providence, RI) and Rhode or Rhoda JENCKES or JENKS or
JENCKS (b. 13 Nov 1741 in Providence, RI). Nicholas was one of four
children born to this couple including, Moses; Hope; Nicholas; and Joanna
BROWN. Nicholas first married Ann CARTER (b. Feb 1770 in Providence, RI) in
Nov 1791 and they had two children, a daughter, Ann Carter BROWN b. Oct
1794/5 in Providence, RI and a son, John Carter BROWN b. 28 Aug 1797.
Nicholas' second marriage was to Mary STEELE who he married on 22 Jul 1801
in Providence, RI. Nicholas died in Providence, RI on 27 Sept 1841.
I am hoping to locate someone from this BROWN Family so that the cabinet
card can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this
family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley
