Hello Michael
My name is Retha Carter and our CARTER family is from New Jersey. Not
positive yet where, but all census states that they were born in N.J.
We have a HIRAM CARTER-b-1818-N.J. (parents unknown, ) place in N.J. unknown.
He married Susanne Mathews/MATHEWS/CARTER-b-1818 in N.J./PA? They had a son
born 1838 in New Jersey. We then locate a Hiram CARTER in Dayton, Ohio in
1840. They lived there for a few years and had 2 sons, Benjamin-b-1842-Ohio,
Hiram-b-1844-Ohio, the family moved then on to Indiana and they had John D.
-b-1847-IN., Susan-b-1850-Indiana. Upon the birth of their last child Susan
they moved to Dubuque, Iowa. Not long after their move Hiram CARTER became
sick and died, September 05-1850.
His widow waited a year then married a man named Thomas McConnell. They lived
in Dubuque, Iowa and then in Grant county, Wisconsin. The children, well,
Joseph W. married a Eliza Jane Thomas, and moved to Rushville/Dekalb area in
Missouri. Then on to Atchison, KS. Susan the daughter stayed in the same area
as her mother and marred a Ellis and Fry. John D. married Francis Burge and
moved to Walsenburg, Huerfano county, Colorado and while working in the
Pictou mine was killed in a mining accident.
Benjamin, Hiram we don't know what happened to them. Possibly killed in the
civil war?? Does any of this information relate to any of your CARTER'S from
New Jersey?
Never hurts to ask.
I will be anxious to hear from you. Thank you in advance for a prompt reply.
