Subject: [NoCarter] John Carter born bef. 1812 Maine
I have tried for many years to find out who this John Carter's
parents
were.
He was a blacksmith in Scarborough, ME.
Oral history from some of my ancestors say that 'our' Carters actually
descended from Robart Carter who came on the Mayflower as an indentured
servant of the Mullins family; that he and two other disgruntled young men
came north with Samoset (Welcome, Englishmen) and that he was permitted by
Samoset to settle on two small islands just south of Muscongus (now
Loud's)
Island near Bristol, Maine. He and his family supposedly fled to
the
Scarborough area during some of the indian uprisings; several generations
later some of his descendants returned to that area and settled on
Muscongus
Island, now occupied by a man called William Loud. As I say, this is
all
oral history, and of course the Mayflower Society claims he, "died the
first
winter," but my requests for a burial site have gone unanswered.
Neat
story,
huh?
And isn't that what life is -- a wonderful story? Thanks to all. Barbara
