Hello- I wrote earlier of my ancestor John Carter/Jean Chartier who was a
Deerfield captive.Fourteen members of his extended family (including those named
Brooks and Burt) were captured and marched to Fort Chambly outside Montreal. His
brother, Ebenezer is the only Carter child who accepted returning to his father.
John, Samuel Jr. and Mercy converted to Catholicism and stayed in Quebec. Mercy
married a Native American and is the subject of a soon to be published young
adult book called "The Ransom of Mercy Carter" by Caroline Cooney. (She refused
to be ransomed although she sent her sons to visit their Uncle Ebenezer many
years later. ) Ebenezer may have been the subject of "recapture" planned by
some
Albany, N.Y. businessmen. Ebenezer lived near his father in Connecticut. Samuel
Sr. left Deerfield in 1705 and helped found the town of New Canaan (sp?), CT.
where there is a Carter Street named after this family. Lots of info is available
on Ebenezer and his descendants.
