You may want to join the CARTER-NORTH list since your CARTERS were from New
England originally. I am sending a copy of this message to that board. Hope
you don't mind.
Good luck. Nancy

There is a John Carter b abt 1712 who married a Hannah Sands 1738 in
Scarborough, Maine. Does anybody know his ancestry? He is my 6th
great-grandfather; I've hit a real wall on his ancestry. His son, Ephraim
Carter, went to Loud's (Muscongus) Island and that is where they stayed for
generations. Any ideas? Many thanks in advance.

Yes, Charlie if you could send your paper I'd very much like it. I plan on
going 'down' to Woburn abt the end of the month and am trying to get as
much put together before that trip. (Seems odd; my John Carter from Woburn
spent a good part of his life repelling Canadians!) I've seen references to
your line before, as well as the minister's line. When I go there I'd like
to check whatever property and legal files I can. There may even be pension
files for his duty in the Crown Point and Louisbourg expeditions in the
1750s. I've also got both Woburn and Stoneham history books on fiche
coming. Anything you can send would be most appreciated.
Regards, Ron
Thank you so much for the clues. I have checked the two Thomas Carter lines
and found no matches. The first Carter I find (that is the Carter line I
am tracing) is James Casrter, in Warren Co., Ga. born about 1735 in Va. died
18ll in Warren Co., Ga. with a wife Elizabeth. Then there is Jess Casrter
born Jan.16, 1765 died Oct. 05, 1826 married to a Sarah Spurling (they were
in Conecuh County, Ala. the next his son Jesse born Feb09, 1821 in Burnt
Corn Corn Conecuh Co., Ala. Married Dec. 17, 1838 in Monroe Co., Ala.,
Deied Sept 11, 1863 in Shubutta Clarke Co., Miss. Wife was Eliza Anders
(Andress), the third Jesse Carter was born Jan. 16, 1855, in Shubuta, Miss.
Died Oct. 15, 1937 in Shubuta, He married Jan. 11, 1877 in Clarke Co., Miss.
Julia Ann Slaten, and their son John Buford born April 09, 1882, in Shubuta
married Mary Frank Walters in Anderson Co., TX. They were the parents of my
husband John, Jr, I have been tracing this line for over thirty years and
can get no further than the James in Warren Co., Ga., if you know of anyone
working this line would you please give them my email adress. Thank you so
much for your reply. As you said it is very fustrating. I just looked at
you email and noticed you were replying to a person named Ron, but
nevertheless I do thank you for your reply. Fay Carter

the John Carter you are looking for. The closest I could come up with was
John Carter born Jan 20, 1713/14 in Woburn, MA. He was the first child of
Thomas Carter and Susannah Winship. All I have on him a date and place of
birth, so I can't confirm or anything who he married or when he died. Only
conjecture, but what if he is the father of the John Carter you are looking
for?

come down through Thomas Carter of Woburn. There were two Thomas Carters of
Woburn. Mine was a blacksmith, the other was a minister. I have seen these
two lines crossed in error but I have never really explored the minister's
line. Have you checked it yet?

descendants of Thomas Carter. (mine) It contains all sources so perhaps
when you get to the children of Thomas, you might be able to trace his son
John (perhaps the father of your John Carter). It seems that since Bob was
tracing his line through one of Thomas Carter's other sons (Edward), he just
noted the names and birth information on the rest of Thomas Carter's
children. I would be happy to attach this paper to an email and forward it
to you if you would like it. Just let me know, I will forward it directly
to you, not through the list.

Is there a John Carter (b abt 1735 Woburn) who married a Mrs. Lucea Davis
(widow) in 1761 in Stoneham in this Carter family tree? Have been searching
for him every which way for a very long time! Any help appreciated. Ron
Hi-
I'm fixing files I got from a family member and I have Daniel CARTER of Kent,
Ct (b 1781, d 1868) married to two women, with the dates not allowing for
widower status, and the 12 children assigned to BOTH women as natural
children. Wife one is Lucinda STARR (b 1785, d 1843) m 1807 the other is
Betsy BOLAND (b 1795, d 1866) m. 1825. (Children are Sam, Sarah, Fred, Miles,
Darius, Arze, Dan, Platt, Lucy, Jane, George, Emily),
Also, for Rev Thos CARTER of England and Mass - I understand there is some
kind of controversy over his wife's last name (being either DALTON or
PARKHURST) Could someone point me to a good place to read up on this? I'm
just getting started and someone is graciously sending me some information
in the mail but these two questions are chapping me, so I thought I'd toss
them out there.

I mean GRANDFATHER was Samuel Carter. However, he was reared by Neff.

Dear Charlie and Becky:
What thickens the plot is that my father named my sister Susie, Susan
GAY Carter. I have never heard of anyone named "gay" except my sister who
turned 50 yesterday, by the way!! Maybe that is where Daddy got the "Gay"
part. I've always wondered. My grandfather was not a Carter. My
grandmother, Mary B. Carter had my Daddy illegitimately. Which is part of
my problem since it was not spoken of. My father was quite ashamed of
having been illegitimate. So his father was Morrison Dunkinson from
Lewistown, PA and his father was Samuel Carter from, I guess, Mifflintown,
PA. I am headed to the court house shortly so I will let you know what else
I can find out about Samuel.
Thanks for your answer, and the interesting Gay part of the Carter name.
Makes me think there might be something Daddy knew and was secretly passing
on in the family name. What do you think?
