I'll use my dad as an example. He has about 8 - 12 marker matches at
www.ysearch.org.
They are related to him but before the use of surnames. So, genealogically, the match is
of no value. However, what is interesting to me is that they are all originally from
England and settled in VA, NC and SC just as I assume his Carters did. It could also mean
that there is a non-paternity event in our tree or the trees of the other matching
surnames and we may not be Carters as we believe. I have not yet considered that as an
option yet, especially now that we have matched another Carter who was also in Baltimore
with Virginia as their birthplace in the 1880 US census. It is too early for most of us
to make solid conclusions with our results.
The first three members in Group 1 on our page is a good example of people who can feel
99% that their research is correct, and that they are related. With their upgraded test
results it will be even more conclusive. Although the other 2 that match or closely match
have not found the connection to this John in NJ, they have some very good clues now.
