I am a member of a couple of other DNA projects, and I recall receiving an
email that was sent to members of one of the groups when there was a
discussion of changes in markers. The writer and his brother had both
submitted DNA to a project, and there was one marker difference. My
recollection is that this was the Anderson DNA project, and one of the
rapidly changing makers was different in the 25 marker test.
I no longer have this email. Since it is not usual for two brothers to
submit DNA to a family project, we wouldn't see this often. All it takes is
one person and one mutation each generation to confuse our charts. There is
also the possibility of lab errors.

I am the co-administrator of the FamilyTreeDNA Lawson Project. I
would be
interested in the information you have that some scientists think a marker
can change in one generation. I have been thinking the scientists would
change their minds. We have cousins in the Lawson project that are one
marker different. We have a situation in the Braswell family name where
fourth and sixth cousins (from different brothers) are three markers
different. One of them is not a fast mutating marker either and we have
documentation that they are indeed cousins. One of the fathers was older
when his son was conceived and it is possible that might cause a marker to
mutate. Also, there is research that the health condition of the parents
at time of conception can make a difference. That makes sense to me. The
DNA technology is relatively new and it will take time to refine it.
