From what I understand the Carter Society is testing descendents of Robert
"King" Carter along with other Colonial Virginia Carters. Although we have had
several participants believe that they are descended from Robert we don't have enough
matches between them to prove it.
For example, in Group 1 on our test results page, there are several matches who also have
a paper trail to the same original ancestor, John born in 1723. Because both their
genealogical research and their DNA matches it validates their research. One can believe
with certainty that this is the DNA result that John, born in 1723 would have had if he
could have been tested. The others who match could also be descendents of John and they
haven't been able to find the paper trail to prove it or they could be a match that is
similar to a match with a different surname, no relationship within a genealogical time
frame.
Since the Carter Society started their own DNA project we have lost several members. To
quote their website:
"The Carter Society was organized in 2001 as a non-profit membership corporation for
the primary purpose of promoting fellowship and understanding of family ties among current
Carter descendants and of fostering high-caliber historical and genealogical research of
the Carter immigrants to Colonial Virginia, their ancestry and descendants."

So if a participant in our group were to find that they matched a proven descendent of
Robert, and had good solid research they would be inclined to join the Society.
