It would not be James Edward Carter. He was born 23 June 1843 in Sterling,
Cayuga Co, NY. In 1850 his parents moved the family to Monroe Co, MI, then
on the Branch Co, where James married Francis Elizabeth Henry and started
his family of 3 children; Maude, Phineas, and Willis.
I have found that the "southern" Carters (or most of them) were from England
My bunch was from County Cork, Ire. At some point in the late 1700s or
very early 1800s the surname was changed from McCarter, McCarthy or some
other form of MC to Carter. Why I don't know! I have also found that the
people of Irish descent are a very closed mouthed people!
Sorry I can't help you. My brother is named David! There was a Jim Carter
asking about a Delia Carter today and I had to look three times! My Dad is
Jim Carter and his wife is Delia!

Betsy,
My name is David Carter. I, and my cousins, are able to track our
lineage to Barnett Burnett Carter, born 1804, buried Charlottesville, Va. We
believe his father was James Carter, but cannot find paper proof. Could this
be
your James Carter?
Sincerely,
Dave Carter
