Welcome to the confusion! I am confused by some of this as well. For
example, I am in Group 19. The only other person in Group 19 is my full
blood brother, and we don't match - one marker distant! Explain that! So, if
there can be one marker distant within the same generation, imagine what can
happen over many generations. The explanations on the web are helpful, but
still leave me somewhat confused, particularly in light of the fact that my
full blood brother and I are not perfect matches.
But, let me point out several things:
1. Per my last e-mail, I have no direct proof that William Carter of
Middlesex County (father of William John Carter who married Mary Goodloe) is
related to the John Carter-"King" Carter line, only circumstantial evidence.
So, I am speculating, based upon circumstantial evidence. And if there is a
relationship, it may go back several generations, and perhaps mutations
occurred over time? Where's the DNA experts? I do plan on further research
as time permits.
2. Remember, the Robert "King" Carter line starts with Robert "King"
Carter.
The closest thing on the site to the Robert Carter line is #17720 in Group
5. He has done an excellent job of compiling this tree - it is one of the
most complete and best documented that I have ever seen of the line that
"King" Carter is in, and I can vouch for the accuracy, because my research
confirms his, with only a few discrepancies. Congrats to him on a great job.
17720 begins his tree with Col. John Carter, the father of Robert "King"
Carter. I have taken this back a little further to:
a. William Carter, born abt. 1475 in Watford, England, d. bef 1530;
b. son Richard Carter, b. abt. 1490, d. 1558 Watford, Manor of Garston,
Hertfordshire, Eng.;
c. son Thomas Carter, b. abt. 1528;
d. son John Carter I, b. 1574, Watford and Aldenham, Hertfordshire, Eng., d.
1630, Newgate St., London, Eng.;
e. son Col. John Carter, b. 1613, Christ Church Parish, Newgate St., London,
d. 1669 at Corotoman, father of Robert "King" Carter.
3. If my brother and I are one marker distant, is it not possible that the 3
sons of John Carter I, William, Thomas, and John, might not have been exact
matches?
I guess my point is that going back some 500 to 600 years, is it reasonable
to think that some mutations in the DNA may have occurred? Is it reasonable
to think that Robert Carter's DNA might be a marker or two different from
the ancestors listed above? Is it reasonable to think that #17720's DNA
might not be an exact match with Robert "King" Carter, even though he may
know that he is a direct descendant?
My take on all of this is that if the DNA is a perfect match, it is probably
conclusive evidence that there is a direct ancestral relationship between
the 2 people. If the DNA is not a perfect match, I don't believe that it is
conclusive evidence that the 2 individuals do not share a common ancestor
within the past 500 or 600 years, particularly if the genetic distance is
close. I believe that the DNA testing is a tool that can help in pointing
the research in the right direction, and may, or may not, be helpful in
one's search. I envy those in Group 2 who match. I wish it were that easy
for me in my search for my 3rd great grandfather, where I have only hearsay
and circumstantial evidence. But, fortunately, it has been easier tracing
back my 3rd great grandmother. I stand strongly behind the tree that I
posted - much, much research went into it, not only by myself, but also by
other close relatives. It would appear, based upon the DNA, that this is the
line that Group 2 is from on the paternal side. Those in Group 2 need only
find their ancestor in the tree and fill in their branch of the family.
I wish that my father or grandfather were still alive so I could test their
DNA.
Any comments on this? Any DNA experts out there who can shed light on
confusion?

See my tree under #39347 in Group 19, which starts with William

I am confused by all of this. It looks like several people in Group 3 list
Capt. Thomas Carter as their ancestor. How can they be from the same Carter
line but be in different groups?
Which group is the real "King" Carter group??
Thanks,
Cheryl
