The father of the William John Carter who married Mary Goodloe was William
Carter, born about 1641 (not sure if it was England or VA). I am a direct
descendant of this line through my 3rd great grandmother. If you recall from
an earlier e-mail that I sent, both my 3rd great grandparents were Carter's.
See my tree under #39347 in Group 19, which starts with William Carter. I
have done extensive research on this line. I personally believe that this
William Carter (who was the father of William John Carter who married Mary
Goodloe) is related somehow to the John Carter I line - I just have not been
able to find the link yet.
John Carter I was the father of three sons whose descendants would include
many of the most prominent names in American history. William was the
progenitor of the Middlesex Carters, of which President Jimmy Carter is a
direct descendant. Thomas was the progenitor of the "Barford" Carters,
including Captain Thomas Carter, and whose descendants would marry into the
Dale and Skipwith families. And Col. John Carter was the progenitor of the
"Corotoman" Carters, foremost of which was Robert "King" Carter. Note
that
William Carter, father of William John Carter (who married Mary Goodloe)
settled in Middlesex County, as did the William who was the son of John
Carter I.
As to being a brother of Robert "King" Carter, probably not - or at least
there are no records to indicate that "King" Carter had a brother named
William. "King" Carter's siblings were George, Elizabeth, John Carter II,
Sarah, and Charles, by 3 different wives. But, the dates would coincide with
William Carter, born 1641. Col. John Carter's children were born between
1638 and 1669. In 1641, Col. John Carter was married to Jane Glyn, with whom
he had the first 3 of his children. They were born in 1638, 1639, and 1648.
That's a long time between the 2nd and 3rd child. Jane Glyn died in 1652.
#45620 may have found his missing tree, based on the DNA. Rev. Joseph Carter
III and Magdalene Chastain Carter had a son named Elijah, born about 1799 in
Buckingham County, VA. He is #11 in my tree. I don't have any other
information on this Elijah Carter, however. The dates don't seem to
perfectly correspond, but perhaps it will give him a place to start further
research. These Joseph Carter's migrated from Middlesex to Spotsylvania to
Buckingham to Bedford Counties.

Wow, all of us with Group 2 matches need to check this out. Several of us
are perfect 25 marker match with William Carter & Mary Goodloe # 15223, and
now the new kid on the block (;-) just kidding) # 45620 is a perfect 25
marker match and his ancestry is loaded with names like 'Burwell',
'Landon',
AND 'Goodloe'. Does this mean the Landon Carter group is very closely
related to William Carter who married Mary Goodloe? Could William be a
brother of Landon's father, Robert 'King' Carter?
