I have been watching this flurry of Carter activity and I am so green with envy.
Why is it that I am unable to find a match for my Carter among the thousands appearing
here?
Doesn't someone want to lay claim to us?
We do not have a Carter male to do DNA.
We do not have any other information than what appears here.
William Carter went to Chariton County, Missouri on the early 1840s and died there
approximately 1848-1850, leaving a widow named Malinda, a flock of hungry mouths to feed
and a bunch of property that would soon be auctioned off to pay his debts.
We don't know how William died and we don't know where he is buried.
But most of all, we don't know who his parents are.
Surely there must be someone amongst some Carters from Tennessee, Virginia and North
Carolina who can lay claim to him in their family tree.
Isn't anyone looking for a lost William and Malinda with a brood of children?
Any suggestions as to how I am going to go any further with this?
We have been brick walled for years and I am just totally green with envy!

Yes, Gayle, the Giles Carter line also migrated south into NC, and as I
recall fro previous research, Surry County would be one of those areas. You
can almost be assured that any Carter with the name Giles is from the Giles
Carter line that originated around the Richmond area. Giles Carter was quite
prominent in his day, and a genealogy of his line should not be too hard to
find. Do a search on the internet, or you may want to check
ancestry.com.
Just a caution about
ancestry.com, however. I don't know if you have used it
before, but I have found numerous errors in many of the genealogies posted
there.

Thank you sooo much. This will narrow my research. From memory, there is
also a Giles Carter later in Surry County, NC. Must be part of the group
too.

My Carter line ultimately settled in Bedford Co., and some of my
Carter
line
eventually migrated to Halifax Co. From the research that I have done,
most
of the Halifax Carters are from the Giles Carter line. Giles settled in
the
Richmond area in the 1600 or 1700's, and a lot of his descendants ended up
in Halifax. There were several Charles Carters in the Halifax area. Most
were from the Giles Carter line. Charles Carter of Deerwood had a large
plantation ("Deerwood," among many other plantations) where he lived until
his death (1827) in Pittsylvania Co, just over the Bedford Co. line and
adjacent to Halifax Co. This Charles Carter is the great grandson of
Robert
"King" Carter.

Thank you very much! Yes, that is the Robert Carter. My family is from
Wilson and Sumner Counties, TN, and also Allen County, KY. I will
certainly
look at your DNA #! I've done a little research on who Charles Carter's
father might be but nothing concrete yet. Since I'm also looking at the
Braswells in NC, I'm learning more every day about Halifax County and the
surrounding area. I'm thinking Charles has to be from the VA Carters;
however, I could be wrong. People were coming in from the north all during
that period. I just need to do more research right there in Halifax to
get
the deeds of Charles Carter and see where his property was located.
Halifax
was made from Edgecombe in 1758 and Edgecombe was made from Bertie in 1741
and Bertie was made from Chowan in 1722 and Chowan was made from
Albermarle
in 1670. So, Charles's father could be any of the Carters from those
counties. I would very much like to exchange information with you.

There was some belief that Robert Carter that married Martha Patton, my
line, was descended from Giles Carter, however, after taking the DNA test - and I
am a direct line from this Robert Carter - my haplogroup of R1a and the DNa
is not similar to the Giles Carter line as posted on
Carter-cousins.org. The
Robert Carter that married Sarah Bradley I cannot opine on, as I have never
seen DNA from this line. I agree with you that a great deal of the entries
that were made (pre-internet) were erroneous. One example is that Harris
Carter was shown as a son of my Robert Carter. There were other errors. There was
also a great deal of errors on the Robert Carter that married Sarah Bradley
but this was corrected for me from a correspondent in Sumner County, TN who
did extensive research on both Charles and Robert Carter that married Sarah
Bradley. He descended from their daughter, Frances. I am curious how this will
all shake out if someone can come up with documentation. Vic Carter
