I hate to admit, Gayle, that my 78-year-old cousin in Idaho believes it may be excusable
by way of temporary insanity caused by excess frustration if we do a bit of grave robbing
just to get at a Carter male but so far we have held ourselves in check.
We have also tried the Weeden name with no luck.
I bought every disk of Bedford County court records, birth records - every single thing
that was ever there.
I have pestered the poor people in Chariton County and the little Idaho lady went there
herself.
I have turned the earth upside down to find birth and death certificates for the children
only to find that every last one of them lists William Carter as father "birthplace
unknown" and Malinda as mother "last name unknown" and "birthplace
unknown".
The only slightest clue I have is that William named his first-born son Daniel.
Daniel named his first-born son William.
William, my great-grandfather, named his first-born son Daniel.
Daniel died but my grandmother named a son William.
That is a pretty weak clue.
There are lots of Weedens from the northeast.
And there are lots of Daniel Carters from the northeast.
Maybe he just passed through Bedford County dropping children on his way to Missouri.
And now that I think of it - I do not even know that William Carter died in Missouri.
He could have gone back to Tennessee to do another land deal and been killed by
highwaymen.
He could have been bitten by a snake outside St. Louis.
He could have gone to hunt buffalo with the indians in Kansas.
Oh, sigh..... such an old dilemna.
You have been very patient to listen to me though.
And I am most grateful for that.

Bedford County, TN, is closer to AL and GA than to the counties along the
TN-KY border. Have you looked at the Weeden name? And no males to DNA
test. Rats!

Thank you so much for your reply.
The 1850 census does not show William because he had died.
It shows his widow and all his children.
My great-great-grandfather, Daniel Weeden Carter, repeatedly stated he was
born in Bedford County, Tennessee but I have never been able to find a
William there that seemed to work.
It has just stumped all of us for years and years.
The 1850 Chariton County census has Daniel living with the Recob family
and all the younger children are living with the widow Malinda. Later
another of her children, Jacob C. Carter, who lists Bedford County,
Tennessee when he joins the Confederates during the Civil War, is living
with the Recob family in the 1860 census. There is no relationship
between the Recobs and the Carters though - I have pursued that endlessly.
I think they were just hired out to put more beans and taters on the
table.
I love you name.
That is what we need - assistance unlimited!

It is possible he belongs to the Harris Carter bunch in Wilson and Sumner
Counties, TN. From memory, my Harris Carter shows up in Wilson County
about
1822. Then his son, Benjamin Carter, moved across the line to Allen
County, KY. They had a brood of kids and were very poor. Some of them
went
north, but I think later. Where does the 1850 MO census say your William
was born?
