Margaret:
I agree with Bryan. There are so many Carters that haven't yet been tested
so there is no way to know every DNA sequence associated with the surname..
I would never ask a person to leave the group just because they don't have
matches. Only the participant can decide for themselves when they want to
change groups based on the information they have collected.
And here is my thought on surnames and matches using my father as an
example. My father matched one other Carter several years ago but we
couldn't find a connection. Just this year I had a known descendant of the
Isaac Carter I felt my dad descends from tested. He was a perfect 37/37
match. Isaac was born about 1775 in VA. Many experienced researchers have,
over the last 20 years, tried to determine who Isaac was the son of and
haven't. He didn't have money - died in the "poorhouse", his children
never
had money so only old tax records, census records and a few marriage records
exist. So we know we were "Carters" since 1775.
My dad's DNA matches also include non-Carters. Without a paper trail to
connect us with these other surnames I would never consider leaving the
Carter surname project and joining another. No one "DNA result" has just
one surname attached to it.
If you look at group one under Haplogroup I, I believe they have developed a
good baseline to state what their ancestor John's DNA is. So if someone
later, who has traced themselves back to this John is tested and does not
match it is one of two things - a NPE or a mistake in research. Until
several more descendants of your Charles Carter are tested and results are
compared we can not say for certain which is the genetic Charles Carter
descendant.
Hang in their Margaret - it took me 5 years to get from 1883 back to 1775
with DNA testing. I'll wait another 5 or longer to find Isaac's father!
Since we probably won't find anymore "paper" it will have to be through DNA
testing.

Thanks for the encouragement Bryan. I really appreciate it. It took
me 30
years to find my Dad's family, so I should be more patient than I am.
