Hello,
Just wondering if anyone can help me out with my Carter lineage?
The best I have so far is:
William D. Carter born about 1829 in North Carolina, died about 1869 in
Weakly County, Tennessee and buried in Mount Pelia Cemetery, Weakley County,
Tennessee. He married Mary Ann Lawler, daughter of Martin Lawler and Nancy Ann
Davis. Mary Ann Lawler was born April 1, 1828, in Weakley County, Tennessee.
She died August 1858 in Weakley County, Tennessee and buried at Mt. Pelia
Cemetery, Weakley County, Tennessee.
(I have found him in the 1850 United States Census, Weakly County,
Tennessee, District 14)
W.D. Carter, Age 21, DOB 1829, North Carolina, Occupation: Saddler
Mary Carter, Age 22, DOB 1828, Tennessee
(The census shows that they were married within one year of that census
being taken)
Living in household with them were:
M. Johnson Age 41,
M. Becum Age 16, Born in Tennessee
William D. Carter and Mary Ann Lawler had the following Children:
1) James Martin Carter Born December 26, 1851 in Weakley County, Tennessee
and Died April 22, 1934 in Calloway County, Murray, Kentucky and buried at
Murray Cemetery, Calloway County, Kentucky. James Martin Carter married Sarah
Lou Bailey, daughter of Seth Winfield Bailey and Martha Azilee O'Conner, on
July 3, 1872 in Massac County, Illinois. Sarah was born January 13, 1853 in
Graves County, Kentucky. She died May 8, 1923 in Murray, Calloway County,
Kentucky and was buried in Murray City Cemetery, Murray, Calloway County, Kentucky.
2) William P. Carter Born February 28, 1854 in Tennessee. He died March 13,
1936 in Calloway County, Kentucky. He was married to Dora
3) Joseph B. Carter was born June 6, 1857 and died February 12, 1940 in
Weakley County, Tennessee and was buried at East Side Cemetery, Weakley County,
Tennessee. He was married to Gertrude V. Unknown.
(James Martin Carter, William P. Carter and Joseph B. Carter lived with
their grandmother Nancy Ann Lawler and her daughter's, Virgina Lawler and Sarah
Lawler in Weakley County, Tennesse. I can not find William D. Carter except in
the 1850 United States Census as mentioned above).
James Martin Carter and Sarah Lou Bailey had the following children:
1) Florence Pearl Carter born January 6, 1885 and died November 8, 1965. She
was married to Alphonso Overby
2) John W. Carter
3) Seth Carter
4) Norah L. Carter

6) Jessie Martin Carter
7) Virginia Carter
8) Maude Carter
9) Joseph Seth Carter
Joseph B. Carter and Gertrude Viola Unknown had the following children:
1) Jack Haley Carter
2) Winfred Carter
I have been able to get alot of documented information on my Lawler, Bailey,
O'Conner, Overby Lineage and willing to share what I have on this. However,
my Carter lineage has been a needle in the haystack. I have been at a
deadend with them for a couple of years now. As stated above, I have been able to
document my Carter's from 1850 to present but nothing further back. Any
help would deeply be appreciated.
Thank you all in advance,
Linda Overby-Hedge
