Of course you are correct that if the Y-DNA Haplogroups do not match then the two men are
not closely related along their direct paternal lines.
But, when the two Y-DNA Haplogroups do match, that does not automatically mean the two
mean are closely related. When the Y-DNA Haplogroups do match then you ALSO have to look
at the Markers.
As I’ve posted many times, 2 out of 3 men in England are "R1b".
Being the same Y-DNA Haplogroup is not enough to make a "match". BOTH the Y-DNA
Haplogroup AND the Markers have to match for two men to be considered a
"match".

I thought if you did not match haplogroups there was no way your related. So why bother
looking and comparing markers if the haplogroups don't match? I am from the J2
haplogroup. Only 3.5% of men in England have this haplogroup.

Subject: [CARTER-DNA] Why the Markers are Important
If you look at the chart on this webpage here:
http://www.eupedia.com/europe/european_y-dna_haplogroups.shtml
You will see that 67% of the men in England (that's 2 out of 3) are Y-DNA Haplogroup
"R1b". Since most American Carter families came from England, you can expect
that 2 out of 3 American men with the surname Carter will be Y-DNA Haplogroup
"R1b". That is why is it so important to look at the Markers and not just the
Haplogroup.
