There were many, many, many different Carter families in Georgia in the
early 1800's who had members who then moved on to Alabama. This was one of
the typical migration paths followed by many European descendants as they
expanded across North America.
The Carter surname is primarily English in origin -- Carter: one who drives
a cart. A primary ship route was between England and Virginia. A lot of
American Carter families say they are "from Virginia" because Virginia is
where the ships landed.
From Virginia the European descendants generally moved westward or
south
and then westward. The typical southern route was:

North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Alabama
Mississippi
Louisiana
